I asked in my previous post, what do you think can be done to make it better? I've sat here for an hour looking through the forum part of the website and trying to think where things could be better, and my opinion is a naive one because I am website retarded. I've tried making suggestions, again in a stupidly innocent way, in the graphics update thread of the suggestion box. I agree, things could be better and I'm trying to figure out how rather than dismiss it.
That post that you have quoted was not directed, it was a general post about how much these threads I think can cause trouble, it's only a matter of time before people come in and start the old forum then/forum now debate. It's already happened. I am NOT getting at you

I'm not sure what your post means, Bumble, and I assume you're being nice, but I have to express my deep concern about such flaming. It does not feel good personally and it does not belong on this site, which is Frank's official unofficial site. What we do here reflects on The Man and this really upsets me.

I know some people hate these sorts of threads, but I generally find them interesting. There have been plenty of forums that I've been on that seemed to lose their initial "magic," and I often get curious as to why that happened. That said, though, I don't think this forum has gone south in that way. On most days, I can sign on and find several good new posts, both Frank-related and not. I have to wonder if most of the people complaining are doing so because of changes in their own minds, rather than on the forum itself.
I agree that the search function is pretty lousy. Pretty much every time I've tried to use it, it gave me an error message about timing out or something. And I don't even totally understand the whole archived/non-archived thing. I would prefer it if people would bring back old threads when talking about previously discussed topics, rather than starting a new thread (a good example being the "favorite concerts" thread, when I know the same topic was covered in the recent past), but I understand that it's difficult. And I'll usually contribute to a thread that has the same subject as one I've already posted to. I can't even remember how many times I've listed my favorite three Pixies songs.
I don't really start threads that often, probably largely because I'm somewhat over-sensitive, and I would probably take it personally if no one posted, or someone thought they were stupid. So it's sort of a case of not trying because I'm afraid of failure, albeit in a rather unimportant form.
quote: there are too many useless topics, i'm afraid, people find it hard to stay focused on one subject.
But isn't that a GOOD thing? I mean, if there are a lot of subjects, it's more likely that you'll find one that interests you, right?
quote: Do you think the song db threads aren't working?
I don't think it's that they're not working so much as that they're somewhat off-putting. I seem to recall reading in the "Nadine" thread that people are only supposed to post information that came from Frank or another reliable source, or that they know to be true. Now, I enjoy discussing songs, but I can generally only give you my own thoughts, because I don't feel like hunting up obscure Frank quotes. So I usually don't bother posting to those threads.
quote: The work brian dean and dave (is he alive?) do
I can't help reading "brian dean and dave" as "brain dead dave." Maybe that should go in my old thread about misreadings.
quote: But recently, for me, its got a bit to...clique....I dont know, I think its almost harder for new people to try and come in, and get involved, because the whole forum seems to be just this series of 'in' jokes, and stuff like that.
I'm somewhat hypocritical when it comes to in-jokes, because I make them quite frequently (I mean, just look at how many comments I make pertaining to Mad Dawg, The Swimmer, sasquatches, John Mayer, etc.), yet I sometimes find them off-putting when other people make a lot of them. I do think there's an important difference between making inside jokes so as to make other people feel left out, and making them simply as running gags that you're willing to explain to those not "in the know." I also resent somewhat the connection between in-jokes and cliquishness. Just because people have inside jokes doesn't make them a clique. And, if people have been talking to each other for long enough, they're bound to have some private jokes between them. It's just the way things work. It doesn't necessarily mean they aren't open to new people (and new jokes, for that matter).
quote: I think now, if anything, more of an effort is made with new people when they come so they don't feel like this.
I would have to agree. I joined this forum fairly early on, but it was a while before I started contributing, because I didn't think I would be accepted. While a lot of this was probably just my own shyness, I do remember things like being personally criticized for the songs that were voted off on the Survivor threads, and stuff like that made me kind of scared to try participating on the off-topic forums. Also, I think there was much less variety in terms of topics back then, but I could be misremembering. Now, I get the idea that it's easier for new people to just jump in and start talking, but maybe that's just because I'm not new anymore.
quote: Here's my thoughts on this. Not that this would really solve the problem but I think certain topics really SHOULD go into the FAQ section. Like what are the Where Is My Mind lyrics and ESPECIALLY the "I'm new to Frank Black which album should I buy first?" kinda things.
Might be a good idea, although I'm not sure what the answer would be for the latter question. It's a frequently asked question, but not one with an agreed-upon answer. (Incidentally, I've seen other band FAQs where the answer to that question was "all of them.")
By the way, whatever happened to n/a? The forum was so much better when she was here!

VV, I, too, miss that girl named Tre. She was one of the first people who was inclusive of me and acknowledged by presence. I'd post and post and people would ignore me, newbie that I was. And I do recall with gratitude the gracious forum elders who were kind to the likes of me -- floop, homers, tre, daisy, dayanara and, would you believe, shine?! Actually, he was the first forum member to say hi to me.

Like what are the Where Is My Mind lyrics and ESPECIALLY the "I'm new to Frank Black which album should I buy first?" kinda things. The "what is you favourite this and that" threads are ok though, for the sake of new members. Others can ignore them anyway. A short description of each album would be nice as well. No more that a couple of words, just to make someone who hasn't heard them yet an idea on how they sound like.
The search function should be thrown out, instead there should be a link to Google advanced search with short instructions on how to use it to search the forum topics. It works great but many people don't know about it. It should be written in big bold letter on top of every page. The link to the FAQ should be more visible as well.
About why the song database threads aren't working: I think the problem is they are kinda forced upon us. I absolutely LOVED the Thalassocracy thread, very interesting and informative and there were other nice ones as well, but as soon as you go "here's a song analyze it!"… Takes the fun out of it.
Thanks, I agree with most of that. For the FAQ, all you have to do is post a message in there saying "I think this should be in here" and Mereubu will take care of it for you. You can send her an email too. This goes for anyone. Both your suggestions are probably good ideas.
As for the search, again, you're probably right. I'll look into that.
Finally, I understand your point re:the song db threads but we're trying to get it up to date and full of info, which you don't do by waiting for someone to randomly start a thread. I think Tre's doing it as best she can, though perhaps your idea could be worked into the context of what we're trying to accomplish.
Thanks for the ideas though, appreciated. Incidentally, if others have ideas, always feel free to post them in the Website suggestions forum.

I think floop is right! (I can't beleive I said that) Anyway everybody is here because they want to. I can understand that people whu are here since the beggining feel a bit bored with some repeated topics, but I also think that you have to understand that there are a lot of people that don't know THAT much, and that they also have the right to ask it again. That's just my oppinion. I feel like I'm a newbie myself.
FB.net is a very good forum with some very good people posting on it and we have Frank posting here here too, what else could we ask for?

You know, I don't think I can remember the last time so many people agreed with me so strongly. This must by my one successful post. It's all downhill from now. So I'm off to the FAQ section to try and make some sort of a contribution.

As someone who's stuck to the Frank Black sections of this forum maybe 80% of the time I've posted here (which has been since the beginning... I was also on the old Abstract Plain mailing list while Dave Noisy was first throwing around the idea of starting up frankblack.net) and only checks the General Chat area when I've really got serious time to kill and doesn't know anything about the old soap operas and old cast of characters mentioned here, this thread is pretty funny. The old frankblack forum "magic" happened right under my nose and I never saw it, I guess.
Anyway, ya know there's a whole lotta cool Frank Black stuff happening. Any day now we could hear something new about Honeycomb's release or that other album Frank recorded last year or the Catholics box set or Frank playing the Zodiac Killer in some movie or Frank's future live shows (with the Pixies or solo or with others). We don't know when official word on any that stuff will come. We just know it's gonna be soon. It's not like this the My Bloody Valentine board and we onlyl get news every seven years. There's a whole lotta FB news on the brink of announcement.
If anything I'd think that would keep the forum interesting for you. |

i've been avoiding this thread like the plague, but i feel i must chuck in my 2 cents.
first of all - there are days i find the forum boring. i'm sure that there are days that 90% of us feel that way. does that mean it sucks? no. sometimes i find life boring, as daisy said. she's so wise. wise beyond her years for sure.
second of all - this old vs. new discussion is the worst. old people (myself included) - deal with it, its not 2002 anymore. new people - try and not start threads that are really over done - and even though the search option isn't perfect, you can still find out if someone has made a pixies vs. nirvana thread before.
third - great suggestions elevator lady, keep them coming. its new blood with good ideas that makes the forum grow. i remember when a young sappling named dean was planting his roots in the forum, and now he is the 'acting boss' to use mafia terms. so keep the fresh blood coming.
and finally - its just the internet. we're all nerds. let's use our superior intellect and lack of sports skills to make this message board a rarity - a non-lame music based message board.
