They're truly back. I hate it.

On the tube home tonight I was sat opposite a gentleman clad in a white and brown checked flannel shirt, with a brown knitted tie, immaculate bootcut jeans and modishly retro brown trainers. No doubt heading into the wilds of North London suburbia under duress, undoubtedly he was later heading maybe for some tapas, or for a glass of red wine and some garden salad at his web-designer friends Pier's and Jools' loft conversion in Clerkenwell or Hoxton. Fortunately, his iPod (no doubt rocking to the sound of Morcheeba or other slightly out-of-date coffee table triphop) was there to keep him company until the train emerged from the tunnel, when he pulled out the thinnest phone in the world to check in with his meeting at the other end. Being in media sales is a full-time job, y'know. I left him there checking his hair (a mildly toned-down, smarter version of the look of 1996, when he was at every Ocean Colour Scene gig he could make), and consuming an entire packet of Munchies - not a problem, the gym's always there every morning.

You know what I thought? Damn yuppies, I thought.

I'm saying I probably haven't been sufficiently judgemental today, and it's overflowing onto random strangers.

When being judgemental toward a group of fellow humans (which I do often), I don't mind yuppies as much as hippies.
But it's all the same thing; either way it's artifice, self-anointed specialness, a donning of a uniform and the espousing of trendy values.
The yuppies probably smell better.

The annoying thing about true yuppies is they are all style over substance. Validated by other such nonettes suited and booted with gadgets and gizmos to get jealous over.

Yuk.

Simon? Sloppy? say it isn't so!!

I'd say scruffy rather than sloppy.

No, thats not true actually.

Well, maybe a little.

I had my smart red t-shirt on and my cool trainers, but my jeans have got a bunch of unsightly holes at unstrategic points. I don't know if thats hep these days or not.
Cooler than yuppie boy anyway.

hey now...

i have and ipod and it has morcheeba on it. what are you trying to say? I don't like any new music (except frank and very very very few new or modern-day artists) so I tend to have lots of early 90s stuff on aforementioned iPod...

you sayin' i'm a yup?

Flocking to the sea
Crowds of people wait for me
Sea gulls scavenge
Steal ice cream
Worries vanish
Within my dream

I left my soul there,
Down by the sea.....

ok ok cheese...
work. i do some work with computers. I do some work on company inventory. i do some work on conferences.

friends. i answered that one twuthfully.

phone. it's a silver sanyo flip phone. my old one died (a beat-to-hell nokia 2000 series or something...i don't really pay attention to mobilephones anymore. when i first carried one, it was nerdy and people stared when i took calls but I traveled alot and it was a necessity. but since everyone has one now, why try to stand out?). this phone has horrible sound (can't hear a damned thing), has no alarm to wake me up and is, as i mentioned before, scratched from me dropping/tossing/kicking it.

Cheesey, if I may. A good way to judge whether someone's a yuppie is by shoes. Leather? Tassles? More than $300?
Start there.

You're looking pretty yuppie so far, toba - answer the shoe question. The clincher: do they look cheap but are actually really expensive?

If you buy your shoes at Nordstrom, Kennerth Cole or Gucci or several other establishments of that ilk, you may be a yup.

If you buy them at Sport Chalet, Macy's, etc. you are probably more like Sloppy Simon on the train or something like that.

Your original vague answers were entertaining.

Did you exchange?
Can you Mr. Grieves?

Oh shucks, I didn't mean you LOOKED sloppy Simon, I meant you 'felt' some poor bird with the unfortunate name of 'Sloppy'. Keep your hands to yourself and down with yuppies.

PS I will forever call you Sloppy Simon. Be prepared.

shut up! am not!

shoe question. i have several pairs of leather shoes. none more than $150 US. actually all three pairs of leather shoes I wear regularly cost less than $300. i am currently wearing the soles off one one of them...they need replacing. The shoes i like to replace them cost $70 US. and they're not modish, not really stylish either. i just like 'em. i don't own any of those new in-style dressy sneakers either.

i'm not a yup. so there.

and none of my shoes have EVER had a professional shine. and they've not been shined by me in many many moons.

why am i feeling really defensive? let's not make this about me...let's yell about yuppies.

I want to take the name's thing further, but I have a slightly yuppieish name myself...
I don't need to fear being labelled a yuppy though - I'm Sloppy Simone!

Hang on though $150 for a pair of shoes? Thats [does some maths] £100 ish? Good gravy. I've never spent more than about £30-40 on any footwear.

And Speedy! How dare you?! My hands are reserved.

I don't know about America - here, you can qualify as a yuppy by being called Piers, or Nigel, or some girl's name based on a flower. Simon is a bit like that, only more estate agent-y.

i'm so gonna kick...

would a yuppie like frank black the way you would? would he travel hundreds of miles to see the guy or his old band? would he camp out on the cement for hours before a gig to get an opportunity to talk to The Man? NO. Hell no, he wouldn't. He (or she) would phone the guy who owns the bar to let him (or her) in early to meetngreet.

I've done those. I'm no yup.

grrrr.....

You can't be a true yuppie if you don't have a hedge fund manager. You need at least a cool mill to get in on that action.
