I'm here since the week that it started (I wish I could say since the day it started but that would be a lie) and I always enjoyed it here big time however the last monts or so the forum seems a bit boring to me
maybe it's the lack of news but what I really deteste is all the topics on things we discussed one hundred times already
this is nothing against newbies
lots of people who registered a year (or 2 years) after me have out posted me in months and offered a fresh view on fb's music Besides that I think that this forum is for everyone every fb-fan (or pixiesfan) is free to post what they want and since the search function is pretty hard to use I totally understand that you get topics that are discussed before
so nobody is to blame but that doesn't free me of the burden of boringness when I check to forum
I don't want to tell what my favourite FB album is or the best song from TOTY I thought the FB database-topics were a great opportunity to bypass such discusions. But song-topics seem to be posted like madness.
To main point is that there are just too many threads that don't interested me at all
Pfff, I still love this forum though

Maybe you should take a few weeks off... Sometimes it's all you need.
I know what you mean, really, although "boring" isn't the word I'd use. There are lots of topics that I wouldn't post in, although I sometimes read them (probably too often, I could use the time to do more useful things, but I'm weak). They're generally entertaining, if a bit pointless on the whole. But I wouldn't complain about the contents of the forum - after all, it's only up to me to make it better by posting what *I* think would be an interesting thread...
I have a strong impression of "deja vu" about your post, too. I think it's a cyclical thing. When there's a lengthy gap between two FB releases, people get itchy. They need new material to discuss. I mean, a baby is cool, but there's only so many things you can say about a baby :)

I agree, I used to check this forum out all the time and always look forward to it here lately I don't really get much from it although the latest posts from floop tend to be funny. I guess I'm a bit disillusioned with everything lately, especially music which was most of what I came here to hear about. It's insane that I haven't bought a new album since I picked up the newest Nas album a few months before Christmas. Even when people mention new bands to check out I download a song or two and I want to like it but it just seems bland, like Arcade Fire, they're not band but they're just not really all that interesting they sound like something I've already heard a dozen times before. Blah blah blah, sorry about all this rambling.

i fully agree with jop, i must admit i am less interested by the forum than before. there are too many useless topics, i'm afraid, people find it hard to stay focused on one subject.
the last intesting thing was all that jon tiven controversy.
there used to be some great forum characters, like the swimmer/goddess theory, mad dawg, as well as some great members who don't post that much anymore: mun chien, apl (not to mention Adnan le Terrible)... what happened to noisy?
there are some guys (/girls) whose posts i still enjoy though.
i think it will change though, people will come again when honeycomb is released etc.
i posted pretty often how i liked this small, international, fb community. i still do.
I will show you fear in a handful of dust |

I don't know if this thread got moved or not, but I do know that the only mod is Brian, who works hard on behalf of the forum. If you feel any displeasure toward any of the people who volunteer their time to make this forum run, please express it in a civil matter.

Forum is boring! I think you need to hang out in the pictures-of-beautiful-men thread some more! it's all go go go in there!
Seriously though, what can be done to make it less like this? I (even though I'm a relative newbie) do understand how frustrating it is to go to fb general and see a thread that was started only a couple of months ago in some cases started again, and the same questions over and over, Pixies vs Nirvana, what album to I buy first, I <3 TOTY... and even in general chat, in all of it really, some people starting the same thing over and over, I like dEUS more than frank (two threads) Zen Micros suck (accross two threads)...
Do you think the song db threads aren't working? There's not a lot of posting in them really, we've had some gems but then I'll admit last night I nearly had a very moody loss-of-temper moment at someones "franks fooking with the fans who overanalyse the lyrics" style post.
I wanted to post a bit of a rant about levels and effort and blah blah blah (well I did but deleted it) i'll freely admit i'm not a big one for lyric analysis, I tend to like the songs for songs, but since reading through the stuff for this whole db thing i realise to to so in Franks case would be a mistake because he is so BLOODY CLEVER. But yeah, I was frustrated because this db is supposed to be for everyone. Do you have any idea how to make these threads work better? Or in a different way?
umm.. I forgot where I was going. I'll come back to this

I don't think that it's that the members aren't cool it's just that I can't find topics that pique my interest. Personally. I think I'm probably just drinking far too much.

it's just every now and again a thread like this starts and it always ends up stirring up bad feelings, there's a lot of "oh i remember when x y and z posted here, the forum isn't the same anymore, the subjects don't interest me..." which not only makes the newer people who still really like hanging out here feel bad because, lets be honest, makes us feel stupid for starting 'stupid' topics and there is always allegations of nonsense threads being more of an issue now than they ever where. I'm sorry but I have gone back in the archives and junk threading/in posting/off topicing is the same as it ever was. The same levels, yeah the same topics can crop up often but there are new ones, and people can always START new ones that interest them but for the large part people don't and spend a lot of time reminiscing (not pointing to anyone here - this is a generalisation) and all this "it's not like it was before" of course it isn't, time has passed people move on new people come along it's like it in life as well as the forum, go back two years in your life and think of the things that have changed, you don't wear the same clothes, you probably read new books and listen to new music you probably lost touch with some people and met new ones, thats how life is so why not on the forum?
It's just so very frustrating because what are you supposed to think? oh back then the forum must have been so cool and we're ruining it now...? I don't think so.
ach forgot where I was going again, need to go buy cigarettes and ponder.
Incidentaly this is not a directed rant anyone.

I agree to a certain extent, but as ive said before, i feel its more me that has changed...which Tre touched on in her post. People change. Lives change, forums change.
I see people point about people who complain about it should make more threads that interest them...but to be honest, to me i just dont feel like putting in the effort, and if i dont feel like putting the effort in, why should any one else?
I think for people that have just discovered this forum, its fantastic. The work brian dean and dave (is he alive?) do, as well as everyone else who contributes, has contriubted, like Jim etc, is astounding.
Its a good community. But recently, for me, its got a bit to...clique....I dont know, I think its almost harder for new people to try and come in, and get involved, because the whole forum seems to be just this series of 'in' jokes, and stuff like that.
However, every now and again, there are some really goodthreads, some good ideas, and soe great contributions. But im no where near as excited about the site as i once was.

well as far as cliques go I don't think thats anything new, I remember when I joined how hard it was to participate because of the same thing. I think now, if anything, more of an effort is made with new people when they come so they don't feel like this.
(unless they make blanket threads/posts about the same thing, thats just plain annoying)

Here's my thoughts on this. Not that this would really solve the problem but I think certain topics really SHOULD go into the FAQ section. Like what are the Where Is My Mind lyrics and ESPECIALLY the "I'm new to Frank Black which album should I buy first?" kinda things. The "what is you favourite this and that" threads are ok though, for the sake of new members. Others can ignore them anyway. A short description of each album would be nice as well. No more that a couple of words, just to make someone who hasn't heard them yet an idea on how they sound like.
The search function should be thrown out, instead there should be a link to Google advanced search with short instructions on how to use it to search the forum topics. It works great but many people don't know about it. It should be written in big bold letter on top of every page. The link to the FAQ should be more visible as well.
About why the song database threads aren't working: I think the problem is they are kinda forced upon us. I absolutely LOVED the Thalassocracy thread, very interesting and informative and there were other nice ones as well, but as soon as you go "here's a song analyze it!"… Takes the fun out of it.

I both saw and appreciate that, however threads like this do drum up bad feeling, if you look back there's been a fair few of them, and the results are always uncomfortable.
I asked in my previous post, what do you think can be done to make it better? I've sat here for an hour looking through the forum part of the website and trying to think where things could be better, and my opinion is a naive one because I am website retarded. I've tried making suggestions, again in a stupidly innocent way, in the graphics update thread of the suggestion box. I agree, things could be better and I'm trying to figure out how rather than dismiss it.
That post that you have quoted was not directed, it was a general post about how much these threads I think can cause trouble, it's only a matter of time before people come in and start the old forum then/forum now debate. It's already happened. I am NOT getting at you

I was just sharing a disturbing feeling with people that I rank high (including you) I was wondering if people would agree it seems clear to me that I didn't want to attack anyone why would I want to do that?
luckily, ElevatorLady has some great ideas that would work, I think keep up to good work
