Hello people, I would like to hear from people about their choices for top ten albums that you must have. One catch though too keep it interesting, no Frank Black as I already have or am actively seeking out all of his recordings that I am aware of. frankusblackus, your opinion would be appreciated and respected. Thanks all

Alright, thanks for the interesting challenge. I don't have as much free time anymore to listen to music intently for pleasure, and as a result, I'm probably going to fall back on some tried and true favorites from years past. By the way, Frank recently listed 10 records he feels were most influential to his musical evolution in a great newspaper article that can be found elsewhere on this site. You may find that enlightening.
In no particular order, way more albums that never fail to inspire me than you asked for:
The Feelies - Only Life Daniel Lanois - For The Beauty of Wynonna Bob Dylan - Biograph boxed set (impossible to choose 1 album, this is a good place to start) Catherine Wheel - Happy Days Jon Wayne from Texas - Texas Funeral Gong - Flying Teapot The Velvet Underground - self-titled third LP Sun Ra - Live in Berlin John Hammond - So Many Roads Webb Wilder - It Came From Nashville Lightnin' Hopkins - The Aladdin Recordings boxed set Alex Chilton - Stuff The Modern Lovers -original John Cale and Kim Fowley demos compilation on Rhino Camper Van Beethoven - II & III Moon Martin - Shots From A Cold Nightmare / Escape From Domination (first 2 LPs on 1 CD) Television - self-titled 1992 release MSR Madness Volume One (vintage song-poem 45 compilation) Eleventh Dream Day - El Moodio The Posies - Frosting On The Beater Moe Tucker - I Spent A Week There The Other Night John Lee Hooker - Live At The Café Au-Go-Go Patti Smith Group - Radio Ethipoia Big Star - #1 Record / Radio City (first 2 LPs on 1 CD) Talking Heads - The Name of This Band is Talking Heads Luna - Bewitched The Swimming Pool Q's - The Deep End (expanded reissue CD) Elvis Costello - Brutal Youth Lou Reed - The Blue Mask Speed The Plough - Wonder Wheel Matthew Sweet - Girlfriend The Gories - I Know You Fine, But How You Doin'? Monks of Doom - Meridian Pinback - This is a Pinback CD James Brown - Motherlode The Band, et al - The Last Waltz
Happy hunting!

You've got some excellent taste in music yourself, Mr. Radiator; The Posies, Chilton / Big Star (ain't "Like Flies..." a great album?), Lou, Dylan, Jonathan Richman, Luna, The Monks of Doom. Christ almighty, man. If you were a female I'd marry you on those virtues alone.
The Velvet Underground's third LP was fantastic. The last song I played during a very drunken impromptu jam session (wherein two of the four members of the group barely knew how to play an instrument, not that I'm a virtuoso or anything), we played "What Goes On," and the organ player played this amazing solo on a Hammond B3. The most fun I've ever had playing in a band.

Hmm.. I might go onto about 15 albums or so. They may not even make it into my cd player anymore, but they certainly shaped my idea of what make an artist fantastic. (Most of the discs are pre-1995. I think that's when I dropped-out altogether.)
Shudder to Think - Pony Express Record Jawbox - Grippe Flux of Pink Indians - Strive to Survive Causing the Least Suffering Possible Sex Clark Five - Strum and Drum! King Crimson - Red Pixies - Surfer Rosa Lou Reed - Transformer the Clash - S/T (US) Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted Throbbing Gristle - Heathen Earth Kinks - Preservation (Acts I & II) Unrest - Perfect Teeth Bruce Springsteen - The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle Richard Hell & the Voidoids - Blank Generation Future Sound Of London - Dead Cities

Hell, I geuss that means that I have too get a first job.(scratching my head in utter dismay) Seriously though, I really think it is quite cool too see what everybody else listens too. I am very new to this forum and have been very entertained by many of the posts. I think I will stay awhile. Thanks again!! |

Top ten, at the moment---most of this usually stays the same, however. In no particular order:
1. Pixies---Doolittle 2. Frank Black---Teenager of the Year 3. Television---Marquee Moon 4. Talking Heads---Remain in Light 5. Wire---Chairs Missing. 6. Modest Mouse---Moon and Antarctica. 7. Velvet Underground---Loaded. 8. The Fall---hard to pick one here; maybe start with A-sides, though I prefer Extricate, Nation's Saving Grace, Wonderful Frightening World, Marshall Suite, UNutterable, etc. 9. Pavement---again, hard to pick one 10. Silver Jews---American Water |

I usually listen to about three albums a day when I'm working at home, so asking me for a top ten usually makes my head explode, so I'm going to have to add some more in there(can greatest hits count, thier abit of a cope out but who cares when the bands are amazing)? and some Irish bands nobodies ever heard of:
Capratone - The Art of Go The Jimmy Cake - Brains Rollerskate Skinny - Horsedrawn Wishs Scott Walker - Boy Child(very good to work to) Silver Apples - Silver Apples Pixies, Pixies Pixies Mum - Mum(also very good to work to) Lambchop - Nixon Bjork - Greatest Hits(and again, very nice to work to) Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac - Greatest Hits
I wish I had some proper The Fall, Pinback and Make Up stuff to listen to, so I think I'll rob some off a friend of mine who has loads of thier stuff!

I like to keep my Marquee Moon for speacial occasions, it's such a brillant album, I've over done listening to it alot so I like to ration it out now. Sly & the Family Stone are really good Bazza for funky fun shit and I would highly recommend Luke Vibrants Nuggets 1 or 2 to anyone who likes outer space funk Kraut Rock with bells on.

Man, that's funny. My girlfriend of 11 years (let's just call her a wife) shares some of my musical tastes but not all, but I guess I'll keep her.
If you really dig the Velvets, you'll get a kick out of this story: A few years back, I got drunk with Moe Tucker while she hustled me at pool in a trashy honky-tonk bar. Then I crashed on her couch and in the morning made her bacon and eggs and we watched Terms of Endearment.
That's true.

You lucky duck! Moe Tucker is the best! I once saw her on a double bill with Jonathan Richman and she was hilarious. JoJo had spurned the chocolate chip cookies I brought him (I figured, well, "he eats with gusto, damn, you bet" so he might like cookies) and Mo was like, "Hell, bring em out here! I'll eat them!" So my husband and I sat around with Mo and Sterling at their little folding card table where she was selling CDs and she gave everyone who bought something a cookie. She smoked generic cigarettes and did the best damned version of "Bo Diddley' that I have ever heard. Anyone interested in Moe can get copies of her stuff straight from the source at:

Holy shit. I love both of those stories. I've only met one musician ever, and it was for like 30 seconds. Chris Xefos (of King Missile and Moth Wranglers fame) in Chattanooga, TN. at this bar I was watching him play at.
I said, "Good show."
He said, "Thanks."
We went our seperate ways. Exciting, no?
