I could see myself being a little too lazy to push 4-5 buttons for each CD, though. Just hand the sender a sheet of stamps and take a coffee break.

I have their first two albums, and they're excellent. I've heard mixed reviews on their third, and pretty much only bad stuff about their fourth.

I'm not sure how visible it is (I went with a somewhat low print quality to save ink), but the picture is of the Whore of Babylon and the seven-headed dragon from Revelation. I think it's part of an Albrecht Dürer drawing. I'm not really sure why, but I've started putting mythology-related covers on some of the mix CDs I make.

By the way Mike, you've made me stop listening to all the mixes today thanks to YOUR mix. I had to put in my Futureheads cd after hearing your mix, and that's all I've listened to since getting off work. 2 1/2 more weeks until their Dallas show.
I've been a pack rat lugging all these mixes everywhere I go.

Vo, did I ever get back to you about that Sugarplastic song, Polly Brown, that I could never get formatted for the web? I guess I could just put it on my ftp site and let you download it there--let me know what you think...

If it's the LP version, I probably already have it.
Comments on other people's mixes should be coming soon. I'm still in the process of listening to them.

Thanks SuperB! If I have made you put your Futureheads album back on, then I am happy enough with that. I think I should become that band's manager. |

There's some information on April March here. Her real name is Elinore Blake, and she was an animator at one point. One of her gimmicks is that she sings most of her songs in both English and French.
Oh, and she's not to be confused with AN April March, a band that did a pretty good cover of "Alec Eiffel." No, I'm not sure why they're legally allowed to have names that are so similar, but it's confused me in the past.
The Sugarplastic's first album is available through eMusic, but I'm not sure whether it's accessible outside of the States.

Okay, as far as the CDs I've listened to so far go:
shineoftheever: Pretty cool mix. I like the Replacements song. They're a band I've been considering getting into. The Sloan songs are also great, although I already knew them. They're a band that my girlfriend got me into. "Friggin' In The Riggin'" is pretty amusing. I'm not sure what to make of that "Dramatic Reading" track, though.
Tobafett: I love all the snippets you added in. I kind of wish you'd included the actual Monty Python Finland song, although I guess I could always just listen to my cassette of The Final Rip-Off. And that cover of "Gin And Juice" is great. I'm a sucker for songs covered in ways completely different from how they were originally intended.
Superabounder: I've only listened to it once so far, but I thought it was good. It's nice to see another Camper Van Beethoven fan, although I wouldn't have chosen "Come Out" for a mix.
Broken Face: Come on, a Beatles song? Oh, well. It's a good song. I actually liked the Wilco track pretty well, too. I didn't LOVE it, but I wouldn't go so far as to say Floop is right about them, either. Neko Case is always good, too.
I've listened to Mike's three CDs as well, but since there's just so much there, and no tracklist, I haven't really chosen any favorites yet. Well, the New Pornographers tracks were great, but I already knew those. Still, I enjoyed the CDs, and maybe I'll have more specific comments later.

Shine, any cd's yet? I feel stupid. I thought that Toby's Cocktail party was his cd for our swap, because the other one said fb.net mix #1, so I thought it was from some time in the past. Well, I've spent a lot of time on the cocktail party, but only a few listens to the real mix.
Shine's mix: I'm a former big Replacements fan, so it was nice to hear them. I almost included one of their songs on my mix. I liked Sloan, and especially liked Les Savy Fav whom I had never heard (including the reading-pretty cool). Some of the harder stuff I need to listen to more before it grows on me. Cool cover art.
VoVat's mix: I've enjoyed this one the most so far. Like the Apples in Stereo song. The country feel of Laura Cantrell and Carolyn Mark was beautiful stuff. 1st XTC song makes me consider buying some of their music-only have had two of their cd's in the past. I think I like every song through the middle stretch through the Atari song which brings back memories, the Sugarplastic song which I love the guitar in, Sittin' on a Pitchfork like a lot. Also enjoyed the sound of Lincoln. Lots of new bands for me. Cool cover also.
Mike's 3rd Mix: Only heard it twice, but this one is full of great stuff. Know only the Futureheads. Seems like a great mix for a fun party-lots of energy. This one will be a rival for my favorite one so far. Makes me realize the limitations of my music collection. Dresden Dolls song sounds like a broadway song-interesting. Like whatever song it is where the guitar is out of tune by the end of it(track 4 I think). Like 15- had to listen to it twice as I drove around during 1st listen. Overall plenty of good alternative stuff, and so far every song is pretty enjoyable.
Toby's mix: I like the Viva Voce, the Metric, Dressy Bessy, Detroit Cobras: good female vocal songs on those last 3. I envy your filler items: I had wanted to include movie lines in between my tracks but couldn't figure out a way to do it. The Gourds songs hasn't grown on me yet. In fairness, I've listened to your Cocktail cd many more times. Overall, good sound and variation through the whole thing. Like the jet picture.
That's all I've gotten so far, and haven't had a chance to listen to Mike's 1st 2 cd's. (thanks by the way to Toby and Mike for sending the extra cd's. I'd be happy to burn anything off my mix and send it as repayment if you want anything.)

That's fair. Rubber Soul was my second Beatles album, though, so I was pretty familiar with it.

Which two? Their albums vary somewhat, from weird keyboard-based new wave (White Music and Go 2) to lush, pastoral stuff (Skylarking, Apple Venus Volume 1) to somewhat more straight-up rock (Black Sea).

Well, I thought, this is my first mix swap, I should do a couple of discs, one pretty random pile o' stuff and one with a theme...I hope you guys n gals dig the tunes. I've just relistened to both mixes myself--they're ok but not ultrapolished. but that's why we're gonna have a cd swap #4, right???
oh, and glad you dig the artwork, super,...got both the images off of a GREAT website--NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day (apod). http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/archivepix.html then just put them into Appleworks (where I created my cd-cover template) and cropped and added the text...easy peasy! |

Really enjoying yours Tobafett.
And Vovat - apologies in advance, after listening to yours yesterday (which had some fabulous tracks on btw - middle ones are my faves, but I'll do a proper review later) I'll be amazed if there is more than one track off mine that you like.
You want it all but you can't have it.
