now playing: KSR Old Time mix. The first thing I can say about it is that it's downright impossible to get some work done while listening to it. Well, I didn't want to do my job anyway.

Got rita's mix today. Thanks! Beautiful cover.
Some good news from my part: I've finished my mix, CDs will be sent on Monday. No, really! I've already said it before but this time it's real. Swear to god. It took me about 5 weeks of full-time job but I finally did the nice 3-page deluxe booklet and stole enough envelopes at work to send everything.

OK, I sent the CDs this morning. Scott, sorry for mailing them the same day as you, but as we live on both sides of the Atlantic, I doub't they'll arrive on the same day. Plus I paid for express delivery for those living in Europe and economic mail for the USA, cause I'm cheap. Expect the CDs to arrive in a month or 2...

Uh... I've burned the CD's 4 weeks ago but still haveb't took the time to send them. I'm ashamed. I came back from a week in Lisbon this saturday and it was nice to have Rita's mix in the mailbox, althought ther's no Tony Carreira on it.

Lisbon is great, the weather was excellent (24°C), food was excellent (peixes grelahdos (espada, espadarte, bacalhau, lulas, chocos), porco alentejana, presunto, queijo, pasteils de nata, bolos...), I drank a lot of Super Bock and Sagres, and some Vinho Verde. We visited the center town and Belem, and we've been to Sintra, Ericeria, Cascais, Sesimbra, Setubal and at Portinho de Arribeda (the road to get there is quite scary).

At Sesimbra, we had dinner at a table next Trappatoni, Benfica's coach.

I can say: Bom Dia, Boa Tarde, Boa Noite, Obrigado, and almost every word you need in a restaurant. Portuguese is easy to read if you speak spanish but the pronounciation is incredibly different from french, spanish, italian or english.

I see that you got some of the best things we have (food), peixes grelhados, Bacalhau, pasteis de nata and Super Bock! Sintra is beautiful and Portinho D'Arrabida too.
Good to hear that you had a great time over here and that you didn't find portuguese difficult, not many people can say that.

Thanks for the kind words about the artwork, by the way. It might be the only thing you'll like about the CD...
For everyone, the tracklisting is inside the "booklet" (between the 2 pictures), and I also stole Brian's idea of an explicative page.

I got the Rita mix.

You sent me an extra - right? From a previous round?

I'm really digging some of it. I wish I could sit, listen and use the track list.
One thing I do know:
My baby is most certainly taking me home.

Haven't listended to the Portugese mix yet but will.

Brain - you should see it this week.

Did anyone dig my mix or is it just so hokey - country - mountainy that you just can't stand it?

So, needless to say, if you were waiting around with five bucks in your hand waiting to buy my upcoming brochure Understanding Poop, you can put that five bucks away, 'cause it ain't happenin.

I like hokey-country-mountainy. (Mom was from Bristol, VA / Dad from Brunswick, GA / Grew up hearing the Stanley Bros. and Bill Monroe)

Haven't been able to listen to the entire disc, though. Only 5-6 tracks deep.

-

Received rita's mix a few days ago.

I haven't listened to it. My wife has. She would like for me to tell rita that she absolutly loves "Eno" by X-Wife.

Kim, I love your mix, it's my favourite so far I think. I particularly like 'Troubles' and 'The Revelator' - I have a Gillian Welch album on order now.

Say! Has anyone of you Yankees received my CD? I'm eagerly waiting for some reviews. Meanwhile I'll post the tracklisting:

1) Laurent Garnier - The Cloud Making Machine part 1 (F Communications)
2) Tres Demented - Demented (Or Just Crazy) (Planet e)
3) Gary Martin - Tiger Trance (Teknotika)
4) Los Hermanos - Quetzal (Los Hermanos)
5) Designer Music - Problemz de Amor (Planet e)
6) The Martian - Tobacco Ties (7" edit) (Red Planet)
7) Jeff Mills - i9 (React)
8) X-313 - Spectra (Generator)
9) Claude Young - External remix (Logistic)
10) Foremost Poets - Moon-Raker (Soundmen on Wax)
11) Robert Hood - In Basements (Logistic)
12) Jeff Mills - Perfecture: Somewhere Around Now (Tresor)
13) Plastikman - Ekko (NovaMute)
14) Kraftwerk - Ohm Sweet Ohm (EMI)

I still haven't got Sarah's and Scott's, and I don't know if Remi & Mel have sent theirs yet.
KSR, I really dig your mix. My faves are Troubles, Good Till Now (that one's awesome), Wagon Wheel and both versions of Raliegh & Spencer. I love the "indian" background vocals in Troubles; in fact I was about to put a song in my mix called "Astra Apache" which has indian singing over a techno beat and your song reminds me of it (although in a completely different style). Good stuff all in all.
Rita, I have to listen to yours a few times more cause it's full of very different things and I haven't had much time to fully "dissect" it. From what I've heard there are some really good things (mainly the first 4 songs, the last one and the Gift tunes), one or 2 that I don't like at all (GNR & Ornatos Violeta) and the other ones are generally pretty good. But my opinion could change with a few more listens so I won't write more for the moment.

OK. KSR.

Don't have the tracklisting in front of me.

-

The Tara Nevins tracks are fantastic.

"Troubles" at first struck me as being a little put on. You know, with the indian chanting and whatnot. After several listens the sounds clicked. The lyrics and chanting seemed much more complementary than they had at first.

The Tara Nevins version of "Raleigh and Spencer" vs. the Herman, Powell, O'Brien version..
The TN version seems a great deal more energetic, but the HPO version seems more ...authentic? Like they were bluegrass payers turned professionals vs. professional musicians turned bluegrass players.

I woke up last night and sang "Bear Creek" to myself as I feel back to sleep. I really, really enjoyed the Reeltime Travelers. "Ain't Gwine Drinkin' No More" was a bit of a low point on the disc, though.

I'd heard of Old Crow Medicine Show. Didn't know them much past the name. "These Chains" and "Wagon Wheel" are excellent. Hey, they even name-check Johnson City, Tennessee!

The disc moves along at a great clip 'til Gillian Welch comes along. I always find myself skipping over her. Dull.

-

Overall, the disc really stirs something inside. I really enjoy it and plan on seeking out works by everyone featured.

Well, execept Gillian Welch.
