Has anyone read anything from him. Sadly, I'd not heard of him until my adventure over here, but seems he's quite well known as I discovered after picking up Absolute Friends and having people comment on it.
In any case, I thoroughly enjoyed my first reading of his and could imagine it being quite eye opening to some people, which is interesting given that it's a work of fiction. In any case, I certainly found it interesting and very well done, and recommend it highly. I think a lot of you will like it too.
If this means nothing to you, then just take it as a book recommendation. :)

i haven't heard of him. and funny cause i was just thinking that i need to get a new book. i'll check it out. most of my reading lately has been about changing diapers so i think now it's time for something new!
and if you got a chance fill us in with some travelling stories or updates. i backpacked throughout europe in 1992 and had an absolute blast!

Hey Fuman, let me know what you think. As for travel updates, I'm in Greece now and having a great time catching up with family and spending some time with them, going to probably head to Crete and work on my Greek a bit more. Still debating between coming home for Christmas or going to Australia for a year, I guess we'll see. Miss the family and home a little, so it's a tough choice, not to mention that I already have a paid ticket home from London. Maybe home and then leave for Aus in Jan or Feb? Who knows? In any case, all the painful details are on my site, which I think is listed on my bio page or something or I can email it to you if you're interested, but it's quite in depth and a bit overwhelming for a casual view I think. How's the Peg?
Whore, do you have other recommends that I should check out from him (or anyone else, of course). Have you read Absolute Friends?

nice to here cult! the peg is fantastic!
greece is awesome. we hit the islands. went to ios. at the time everyone told us that that when you hit the island you'll see people having sex on the beach. we were told that it is an insanely crazy party island with loads and loads of hot sex crazed women. i was 20 at the time and travelling with 3 other buddies so we were pretty excited! lots of the things we heard were true but i left the island with an empty feeling. i didn't get laid. no shit. i know you're probably saying that's hard to believe. and it's not like i didn't try. all my other buddies got laid by hot european chicks. i dranks lots of amstels and ate lots of gyro's though so all and all it was a good time had by all.

I think I haven't read a single one of his books. Or maybe one, I don't know, I use to read a lot as a teenager. But my sister has some of his books. I'll ask her.

Going by the adage that the book is always better I assume Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and Smiley's People must be amazing epics (2 x 6 hour BBC Mini-Series starring Alec Guinness). |

Ooh, I didn't know they made BBC series' on the books, much less that Alec Guiness was involved. I'll add that to the must see list.

Floop, if/when you travelled Europe, did you wear or bring any college shirts? Do you still own some now? I've deemed this the American equivalent of our Canadian flags.

Dean, don't know you but since your an admin here I checked your bio and followed it to your travelogue of Europe. Pretty interesting and in depth, I'm probably going in the next year for the first time so I'll have to use some of your stuff as reference for my own trip. Must be nice to be able to travel around for such an extended period of time. Your making me jealous you bastard! : ) |

i don't know if i'd consider that quite the same.. but to answer your question, actually no. i was never big into the college shirt wearing
i'm not going to argue with you that American tourists can be assheads. there is no argument there whatsoever.. i just think the Canada flag patch thing is an interesting phenomenon |

i did. it was a total chick magnet! but not for me.
met a lot of cool americans travelling. and very friendly. they would always ask why we had a canadian flag on our backpack. that was always kind of awkward.
it was funny though when we were drunk and abnoxious the locals would often call us fuckin americans!

Hey Heywood, yeah, I was hoping that it would somehow be useful to someone. If you have any questions when you do go (and yeah, it is nice, though not as relaxing as people probably think) feel free to drop me a line.
Floop, never said anything about American tourists/travellers. I think any tourists can be assheads, though I've found most travellers to be quite cool, including from the US. I did meet one guy who admitted (and was even proud to say) that he was only in Greece so he could appreciate how good they had it in America, and further ate at McDonalds quite regularly and refused to try anything that he hadn't tried back home or local or whatever. There are so many things wrong with that I don't even want to start, but...
The college shirts do sort of strike me as a 'look where _I_ went to school' but I appreciate that it could look the same for the Canadian flag even if it's not (at least not for me). And yeah, I've definitely met a lot of people as a result of that little flag! In any case, I never noticed the college shirt thing until another American I'd met (who was quite awesome and just getting into good music through his friends/girlfriend) pointed it out to me.
FuBru, I'm sure you met some ladies elsewhere, come on! It can be hard when you come from a place like Saskatoon or Winnipeg, they think you're making it up, but... :)

it was so long ago- i may have met some ladies but you know mrs fu occasionally reads my posts ;) and yes being from winnipeg i do occasionally take some flack when travelling but it seems to be only from people in toronto. however, this is pretty funny. when we were backpacking we were able to stay in a spanish home for the 92 olympics in barcelona. my friend was in the olympics and we were staying with his family in barcelona. they had did a house swap with a spanish professor for a month. i guess the prof didn't want to be around for the oylmpics and always wanted to take his family to canada. so anyways when we were at the house we were checking out his book collection. we were leafing through this travel book and it had a section on winnipeg. there were 2 lines highlighed:
-highest average coldest temperature in the winter in the world for a city with a population over 500,000 -most boring city in the world with a population over 500,000
that really cracked us up. (2nd point is totally untrue though)

Yeah, let's fly across the planet so we can eat a QP w/cheese. The only thing I'm slightly worried about is that I'm probably going through Paris to get to my buddies in Belgium, and we've all heard the stories of what unconscionable ballbreakers they can be toward Americans. I guess it'll make things more interesting. |
