The Tara Nevins tracks are fantastic.

"Troubles" at first struck me as being a little put on. You know, with the indian chanting and whatnot. After several listens the sounds clicked. The lyrics and chanting seemed much more complementary than they had at first.

struck me the same, but I am used to a bit of 'wailing' in the old time music world...the fact that they took it into a sort of native american realm was fascinating. i'll bet there is a story behind that track and why that guy is on it.

quote:

The Tara Nevins version of "Raleigh and Spencer" vs. the Herman, Powell, O'Brien version..
The TN version seems a great deal more energetic,
yes, it is more perfect...and there is an electric guitar on it...breaking with traditionalist convention there a bit.
quote:

but the HPO version seems more ...authentic? Like they were bluegrass payers turned professionals vs. professional musicians turned bluegrass players.

yeah - after Oh Brother Where Art Thou, things rather blew up in the bluegrass and traditional music world...seems Alison Krauss and Union Station are sort of the Steely Dan of bluegrass music and if so, the Tara Nevins band is right up there with them (FWIW - pretty sure Tara Nevins was the fiddle player in Donna the Buffalo), but i really honestly dig a little less polish. I like the ear candy, but I like when I can tell the people playing aren't the same kind of people that can and would do albums like the "Pickin on..." albums. There is a new Moody Blues "bluegrass tribute" out there now that is frankly rather nauseating.
quote:

I woke up last night and sang "Bear Creek" to myself as I feel back to sleep. I really, really enjoyed the Reeltime Travelers. "Ain't Gwine Drinkin' No More" was a bit of a low point on the disc, though.

I absolutely love her voice on Bear Creek.
Dig that stuff sticking in your head; see, alot of 'old time' music is dance music from the turn of the century - especially the instrumentals like "Three Forks of Cumberland" and the melodies can be infectuous...designed to sort of trance you out a bit i think.
Drinkin was the first thing I heard from them...thought it was rather cute...got more serious later. I threw it on the mix for poignancy - I was on the wagon at the time. Cheers! ;-)
quote:

I'd heard of Old Crow Medicine Show. Didn't know them much past the name. "These Chains" and "Wagon Wheel" are excellent. Hey, they even name-check Johnson City, Tennessee!

They are a phenomenon. They're from all over...none of them are from anywhere remotely appalchian. some true traditionalists resent them for this, but i like them. They are a lot of fun.
quote:

The disc moves along at a great clip 'til Gillian Welch comes along. I always find myself skipping over her. Dull.

yeah - i got lazy and just kept throwing Gillian tunes on there.
For me, she's the best at what she does...which isn't really old time music...she's very original...but somewhat Sominexual compared to the content of the rest of the disk, Her tunes will stick to you. Keep listening if you can...try it when you're tired some time.
quote:

-

Overall, the disc really stirs something inside. I really enjoy it and plan on seeking out works by everyone featured.

Well, execept Gillian Welch.

Take a bite of the chocolate coffin.

dig it, man.

wish I'd thrown a couple of 'crooked' fiddle tunes on there.
Three Forks is a tad crooked, but nothing like some stuff I've heard.
Crooked tunes don't hit you at first - sort of like a complicated jazz melody...challenges you to listen and try to 'get it'...and they blur the boundary between old time american music and the Irish and Celtic "reels" that are most commonly used in contra dancing...and there we are back full circle to old time music being essentially dance music.
I like thinking about it.

The music that makes the human animal want to shake its booty seems to have more staying power than alot of us would believe.

Someone dug the other CD Swap thread, so I figured I'd do the same with this one. There hasn't been any news in quite a long time now. I still haven't received the mixes by Scott, Sarah, Mel & Remi, and it looks like those in the USA haven't got mine either. It sucks. I hope they're not definitely lost. Anyway, given that no one said a word about my CD, those who don't have it are probably happier...

I have yours Denis - but I've not listened to it yet. I find the mix cds hard to listen to at work for the first time - need to listen at home alone where I can give my full attention to them without distractions. I've just not had the chance lately. Sorry. I can't even promise (again) to listen to them over the weekend because I know it's going to be a full and silly one. I will get round to them all though - every one of the genres/mixes so far has interested me. It might not be the kind of thing I'd choose to listen to myself, but I've found some of my favourite artists by being forced into listening to something else.

How long should we wait before considering them definitely lost? I'd hate to have to burn another batch of CDs, took me ages the first time, but I'll do it if I have to.

Nic, I understand your position. If you want to do something that you know will change your life forever (such as listening to my mix), you obviously try to wait for the perfect time and place to do so. A bit like your first sexual experience. And then one day you'll throw a party, get drunk, and the following morning you'll discover you put the CD in the stereo during the night and you don't have any recollection of it...

Those are brave brave words Denis - now I'm tempted as hell just to check if you're right.

Brian - reading back through this I must commend you on the Desert Sessions replacement. I'd forgotten that we'd almost had a duplication of tracks and glancing at my itunes - track 13 has 4 big fat stars next to it and is the track that has been played the most out of your mix (along with Squirrel Nut Zipper)

Yep, the Low one's off the new (very excellent album). Worth getting. I don't have the box set yet, but I'll look into it.

I have all the standard Mogwai albums now I think, except Government Commissions - it half counts though, so I will get it.

I don't think I can make Sigur Ros, which is a bummer.

Thats about 6 minutes of it - if you download the track from epitonic.com, it's a nicely edited condensed version.

the low 3cd box set is amazing.
the calibre of their b-sides and discarded tracks is amazing.
disc 2 is my favourite.
i bought it online when i was in london for 13 pounds including delivery. i've see it over here for $85 australian. blasphemous.

the new low album is much heavier isn't it?
that has kinda put me off it for some reason - i just love the slow stuff, ie secret name.

i actually think all the tickets have already gone for sigur ros anyways....

government comissions is actually an excellant album. kinda plays like a best of, since they don't have one...except it couldn't be a best of without fear satan.
all the tracks are so quiet until the 18minute like herod kicks in and somply blows your ears out of your head.
apparently they only recorded it that long to piss of steve lamacq (the bbc presenter) because he'd said some disparaging words about the band and wanted him to suffer thru playing an 18minute track on his show.

I'd recommend the Low album anyway, it's absolutely superb. Yes, it's 'heavier' I guess, but still quality.
I'll have to look into Government Commissions as well then, cheers dude.

there's a couple of bands on there that i haven't actually heard anything by.
m83 (tho heard lots) and rachels (well i did about 8 years ago)
what they like?

think your comp and mine from the first go would fit together very nicely.

also, govern comm is worth the price solely for the version of helicon 1. such an improvement over the album version, and the best version they've ever played or recorded apparently.

I reckon so. Apl knows more about Rachel's, it's kind of more classical.

M83 I love - I saw them live recently, amazing. Denis likes 'em.

well, if denis likes 'em, they must be either very good, or french. which is it?

rachels - seen their album souvlaki around for pretty dirt cheap recently.
and classical as in rock instruments with orchestra instruments, or classical as in classical instruments only?

STAY AWAY FROM M83 AT ALL COSTS!! Once you'll hear them you'll regret having entered this thread in the first place. Then your brain will melt from the horror that is their music and you'll end your life as a miserable vegetable. Look what it did to Cheeseman!

Yeah, they're French. This and the "how come the french are so smart" thread make me want to ask the mexican nationality right now.

I'm gonna try one last time to revive this thread and ask for more reviews... I didn't get any for my mix, and I don't know if it's because it was so unlistenable that people don't want to make me feel bad by talking shit about it, or if it's just by lack of time/motivation.
Meanwhile I'll listen to sarah's and post my review - I swear!

Review - ObfuscateByWill:

well, that was worth the wait! I knew I'd like it cause the tracklists of the previous mixes made me drool. I'm currently reading a (very good) book called "Techno Rebel - A Century of Electronic Music", in which the author links today's techno with the "experimental" styles of the 20th century, so it's good to have some David Toop (who's obviously heavily mentioned) to listen to while reading. I've yet to try your mix in the proper conditions (ie horizontally) but I can already say it works as a "soundtrack to work" too... It's definitely gonna stay within hand reach anyway. Thanks for the excellent work.
