Love the Josh Hager track. Where did you say you found him?

Very pleased to see Gil Melle repesented on your mix! I'm more a fan of his electronic stuff (soundtracks to The Andromeda Strain and The Ultimate Warrior in particular) but pleased none-the-less.

I'm going to try to find some Hasidic New Wave and Randy Lorenzo.

thanks for the kind words scott.

the movements thing was invented because i really felt that the mix had three distinct flavors. and because 21 tracks looks unbalanced, and i can get a little OCD about that stuff (seriously).

the josh hager track was totally a lucky find on my part. he used to play/tour with matt sharp, formerly of weezer/the rentals. i had to interview matt/review a show in 2003 for my college radio station, so i was at the show and blown away by josh's playing of the lap steel with an ebow among other things. so i went to matt sharp's website, and that track was there waiting for me. josh now records as "garvy j." and you can hear some stuff at www.garvyj.com

the only gil melle i know is actually this one record. where should i start for his later-era stuff?

the hasidic new wave stuff is pretty easy to come by via amazon.

as for randy lorenzo, i only have that one track, so i can't help you - BUT if you like that style, i highly recommend the 2 great "slack key guitar" comps. available on amazon, iTunes, and elsewhere.

Listening to Brian's mix... My thoughts are close to Scott's. I really like this CD a lot. You seem to have a pretty impressive records collection, there are a bunch of bands I've never heard of. I guess iTunes must be quite helpful to discover cool bands. As said before, I don't have much time to browse the web for new music. Anyway.
The CD flows quite well. Lots of exotica and that's something I enjoy a lot. Here are some thoughts about some of the songs I liked most:
First movement: I love the Squirrel Nut Zippers track. I didn't really get if the song is representative of their sound though. I understand they usually have a singer, right?
Second movement: first half of this part is my fave, from Sufjan Stevens to Morphine. The 3 loungey songs in between are all killers. Love the marimba and the trombone (I used to play the xylophone).
Third movement: the percussion track is ace, I like when an all-percussion band doesn't only consists in 3 djembe players playing the same boring 4/4 track until you get a gun and shoot them down. Don't know if it's the case in the USA but djembes are a fucking plague in France. Anyway, this one sounds great.
Hasidic New Wave is very cool too, it reminds me a lot of Rabih Abou-Khalil. Do you know him? He plays the oud and mixes contemporary jazz with Arabic trad. music. I love his records.
The Beatles track is actually one of my faves from MMT. The vocals kinda bugged me indeed in your instrumental mix, but it's not a big deal as I love the song.
Randy Lorenzo is great. I'd love to know more Hawaiian music (don't know if this song is typical or not actually). I'll definitely check out some more 'slack key guitar' things.

I won't say I loved everything (as Scott said the Sonic Youth track was average, and I didn't like the Zappa song either) but that was very solid. Every new mix I receive from you guys make me feel more ashamed of what I'll send in return...
(just kidding, it's gonna be great and turn everyone into techno fans right away)

Right - finally a belated review of Cheeseman's post rock mix - in fact I only got this mix back today after one of my colleagues abducted the cd after falling in love with it. :

I've been surprised by how much I enjoy this mix - my first listen was when I was very tired and emotional (possibly hungover) after a bit of bender and I said at the time it was like an aural hug. It's a far cry from what I've been listening to lately, but I enjoy the retraining my ears to a different sound.

The one thing that stood out for me is how the flow on this mix is seamless. The entire mix in fact almost works as one big track for me, that's just the way it works in my head.

Hope of States - probably my favourite of all of the tracks, since it has slightly heavier guitars (would love to see that live), but also love the Explosions in the Sky track. The only track that doesn't work for me personally is the Rachel's track - but I've just been listening to it again now to try figure out why and I'm unable to recall what the issue was. This has got me investigating stuff that I'd previously dismiss, which can only be a good albeit expensive thing.

Thanks Nicole. I wasn't all that happy with the mix as it turned out, so that's cheered me up. Some of the tracks I would have put on had already been done (by either benji or myself, most often), so if I was doing a complete introduction maybe i would have done it differently.
The HOTS track was actually more to fill the space - I wouldn't consider them a post-rock band particularly. They usually have vocals, and their album from last year is excellent; I put 'Black Dollar Bills' on my tape, which is a better song I think.

Finaly I'm going to give my review about Simon's mix, first of all I must say that it was stolen from me at first, my husband liked it so much when we first listened that he took it with him...
I liked it a lot, so much, that I've already got Mogwai, I knew them but never gave them much attention, I've got also Low and M83, I didn't knew them and I was very well impressed.
Rachel's is also very good, I must look for their music too.

So, with this english of mine, this is the best I can say, I liked very much, but I was waiting for it, as I liked so much your previous mix too.

I'm all about Mogwai at the moment. Which album did you get rita? I like their latest best I think, 'Happy Songs For Happy People', but its all good stuff.

Hi guys,
need your help. My mix is almost finished, and it looks like it's gonna be pretty cool. But there's a track I only have on vinyl and I couldn't encode it on my computer, and the only mp3 of the track I could find on soulseek has a very low volume. Anyone know a good software I could use to raise the volume of the file? I tried using dbPowerAmp but I couldn't make it work properly.

Hey all.

I've like everyone's mix so far...though I haven't had much time to dedicate to listening.
Apologies.
Cheesy, i think your mix was the most distant from "where I am right now"...meaning I don't think I've made it all the way through the disc yet.
Frankly, I've been rather pedestrian lately and usually listen in my car.

I will try to get some time this weekend to finalize this mix...but we have a gig saturday and there is other stuff happening and blah blah blah...

My comp may not go out on time.

It may, but it may not.

So, needless to say, if you were waiting around with five bucks in your hand waiting to buy my upcoming brochure Understanding Poop, you can put that five bucks away, 'cause it ain't happenin.

2 good news: 1) I've finally finished my mix, and 2) it sounds great... It took me ages, I broke my turntable in the process, and it's not faultless, but I'm happy with the result. The main problem is that the volume isn't linear cause I used CDs, vinyls and mp3 files and I'm not an expert, it being my first mix and all. I may try to fix this but don't bet on it.
I also stole envelopes from work yesterday, so all I have left to do is find a nice cover, burn 9 copies and I should be able to post them on Friday.

Yeah, if I don't get chased down by the crazy drunken married woman with whom I occaisionally couple, I will replicate the compliation this eve and should be able to arrange for shipment on the morrow...or perhaps next week as the traditional "Easter" holiday is upon us.

I apologize for the mix being a bit Gillian Welch-heavy.
That just kind fo happened.
I truly have not had much time dedicate to this, but you will get it.

Well, you can start by not calling me when you're drunk and demanding that I meet you right then and when I explain that I am an hour away and have no car at my disposal you could not say things like "I thought you'd be a little more compliant."

That would be a start.

An voila!

She is ship-ped!

Again - I didn't dedicate as much time as I could have...this whole thing happened at a rather inopportune time...the mix may not be what some of you might have been expecting, but I'll venture a guess that it is more old time (or old time-style) music than most of you have.

1. Troubles - Tara Nevins
2. Sittin in Top Of the World - Tara Nevins
3. Raliegh and Spencer - Tara Nevins
4. Sow Em On the Mountain - Dirk Powell
5. Three Forks of Cumberland - Dirk Powell
6. Bear Creek - Reeltime Travellers
7. Hallelujah - Reeltime Travellers
8. Ain't Gwine Drink A, No More - Reeltime Travellers
9. Higher Rock - Reeltime Travellers
10. These Chains - Old Crow Medicine Show
11. Wagon Wheel - Old Crow Medicine Show
12. Caleb Meyer - Gillian Welch
13. Good Till Now - Gillian Welch
14. The Revelator - Gillian Welch
15. My First Lover - Gillian Welch
16. Red Clay Halo - Gillian Welch
17. I Want To Sing That Rock And Roll - Gillian Welch
18. Raliegh and Spencer - Dirk Powell/Tim O'Brien
19. Wayfarin' Stranger - Dirk Powell/Tim O'Brien
20. Skillet Good And Greasy - Dirk Powell/Tim O'Brien

eh- if ya wanna be all hoighty-toighty about it.

I was just marvelling recently about a place I was walking past that was called the "Olde Towne Shoppes" and I was thinking "jesus christ will these people stop trying to fool the rest of us into thinking that they know more about or are in some way connected to some kind of higher, more literate or more elite sensibility simply because they use a faux 'Olde English' spelling on their signs?"

or something like that.

Really - the e is optional, methinks.

i had a really hard time cramming 400 years worth of music onto one cd. the second disc is heavily string-y, but i'm a string player so i'm biased. unfortunately the whole thing leans very late romantic/early 20th century.

disc one:

1. berlioz - symphonie fantastique, IV. songe d'une nuit du sabbath; philadelphia/muti
2. mahler - symphony no. 1, mvmt III; berlin/abbado
3. hindemith - symphonic metamorphosis on themes of carl maria von weber, I. allegro; cleveland/szell
4. hindemith - symphonic metamorphosis on themes of carl maria von weber, IV. marsch; cleveland/szell
5. mendelssohn - elijah, 'cast thy burden upon the lord,' new philharmonia/fruhbeck de burgos
6. mendelssohn - elijah, 'woe to him, he shall perish.' new philharmonia/fruhbeck de burgos
7. mendelssohn - elijah, 'lift thine eyes,' new philarmonia/fruhbeck de burgos
8. mendelssohn - the hebrides; utah symphony/miller
9. elgar - serenade for strings, I. allegro; english chamber orchestra/barenboim
10. elgar - serenade for strings, II. larghetto; english chamber orchestra/barenboim
11. faure - pelleas et melisande, sicilienne; montreal/dutoit
12. faure - pelleas et melisande, molto adagio; montreal/dutoit
13. dvorak - symphony no. 8, IV. allegro; berlin/kubelik
14. verdi - requiem, 'dies irae, tuba mirum;' robert shaw chorale, nbc symphony/toscanini

disc two:

1. bach - cello suite no. 2 in d minor, prelude; edgar meyer, double bass
2. villa-lobos - bachianas brasileiras no. 5, aria; arleen auger, cellists of the berlin philharmonic
3. bloch - nigun no. 2 from baal shem; vengerov, violin/golan, piano
4. beethoven - piano trio in D 'ghost,' II. largo; du pre, cello/zuckerman, violin/barenboim, piano
5. schubert - string quintet in C major, IV. allegretto; emerson string quartet/rostropovich, cello
6. elgar - cello concerto in e minor, I. adagio; du pre, cello/philadelphia/barenboim
7. prokofiev - violin concerto no. 1, II. scherzo; vengerov, violin/london symphony/rostropovich (i screwed up the printed tracklisting here, this and track 10 are switched. sorry!)
8. liszt - transcendental etudes, wilde jagd; kissin, piano
9. mozart - clarinet quintet K. 581, I. allegretto; tokyo string quartet/stoltzman, clarinet
10. sibelius - violin concerto, mvmt I; anne-sophie mutter, violin/staatskapelle dresden/previn
