YOU GOT FREE KARMA TO BURN?
Their stuff is quite collectable now - could probably flog it on ebay for a packet.
I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me.

So how does this work now?
Do we wait for everyone to have their say on mine or can we move onto Cheeseman's yet?

Yeah, it's going slowly. I don't know if the USA-ers have already received the Cheese mix. I can't review it myself right now cause I haven't had enough time to listen to it attentively. All I can say is that it's full of bands I knew by name but had never actually heard, and that's good. And that I had to stop the CD before the end cause I just can't stand M83, how people can like this band is beyond me. The rest of the CD is pretty cool though... I'll do a more precise review tomorrow if I can.

It's the contents that count.
Looking forward to your curious genre. Have absolutely no idea what to expect.

nicole, i almost used one of the songs that eventually appeared on your stoner rock mix, but i declined thinking that you might use it.
can you guess which one? i'll give a hint - its not karma to burn

Kyuss? That would be the obvious choice - but I don't think you go for obvious, having said that I can be really obvious - ooh damn this is difficult.
Nebula or Neurosis?
Doh - just remembered yours is instrumental - Desert Sessions?
You want it all but you can't have it.

well its a good sign for me because one lady is a big jazz head, one is really into old school punk (ramones, clash, dead kennedeys), one is a big 60s pop (beach boys) fan, and one is a clasically trained pianist and they all agree that it is pretty interesting.
and surfer, i think it is superior for the flow of the mix. but its your call whether or not the song itself is better. its track 13 whenever you get it.

A couple of thoughts on Simon's mix: I said from the beginning it was the one I was the most afraid of. I already had heard a couple of things filed under the "post rock" genre and nothing had really amazed me. For this reason I had never heard anything by most of the bands on the CD although I knew them by name. And I must say the mix ended up being much better than what I expected. I like about half of the songs there. My faves are the 1st Rachel's track and the MbV song, and then come Low, Sigur Ros and Stars of the Lid. The songs I like the least are the ones that sound more like "standard" post-rock (which in my opinion is a guitar-driven song that starts slowly and quietly and grows louder and louder and end quiet again. It's very caricatural, I know. But I once listened to Lift Yr Skinny Fists, the whole album, and it sounded to me like they had one single idea which was to play crescendo/decrescendo/crescendo for 70 minutes). So I didn't particularly cared for HotS, Tarentel, GYBE and EitS. Although there's only one song that I truly hate, and it's M83. No big deal, it's the last one so I can stop the CD after Sigur Ros to make it end great.
My review sounds very harsh, but don't worry about that. I'll definitely check the Rachel's and Low, and I think I'll finally buy Loveless (I've been meaning to do it for a very long time). And if you're bothered by what I said, just remember that you'll receive at the end of this month a techno mix that you'll probably want to run over with your car...

Brian's mix just arrived, what an artwork you've made...
I must write about cheeseman's mix, I'll do it later with more time, but I have to say that I loved it.
Have you heard The days are getting shorter? What will you do when your suntan is faded and the summer's gone? Do you feel afraid? |

Loved simons mix. Alot of stuff i had already heard, but still love all the same.
Explosions in the sky i love, as well as rachels last things last, as i hadnt heard of this band before.
Every mix needs mogwai.
really good, loved it. As i usually do with your mixes cheesy, consistently good.

my full on surfer rosa & stoner rock review:
first of all, this is a genre i was already vaguely familiar with. i've seen QOTSA twice, i own a desert session record and a fu manchu record, and i knew of a lot of the bands on this mix.
so, karma to burn starts it out nicely. and then i really dug the nebula track.
i was familiar with, and enjoyed, the next three tracks (fu manchu, kyss, qotsa)
i have never heard of the workhorse movement, but i like what i hear.
the mix progressed along nicely, including a song i almost used on the instrumental mix, "subcutaneous phat."
the only song i really didn't like that much was the clutch song, which to me didn't even sound particularly like "stoner rock." maybe i just know one smaller definition and that is my fault, but it was the track that i felt stood out and didn't blend in.
all in all, i really enjoyed it. and i don't even smoke pot!

Brian's Mix:
I like the idea of the mix being broken into movements. Seems to lend a bit more flexability than the old Side A-Side B scheme.
First Movement:
Love the Josh Hager track. Where did you say you found him? Not a Sonic Youth fan, so I felt that track was pretty much the same track they've been rehashing since Thousand Leaves. Very pleased to see Gil Melle repesented on your mix! I'm more a fan of his electronic stuff (soundtracks to The Andromeda Strain and The Ultimate Warrior in particular) but pleased none-the-less.
Second Movement:
I love the flow the first three tracks have. Then, when it gets a bit more rockin', I start to lose interest.
Third Movement:
Great. Love the percussion track. It's actually pretty close to something I put on my Int'l mixer. I'm going to try to find some Hasidic New Wave and Randy Lorenzo. Good stuff.
All-in-all: Great mix. Hands-down my favorite so far this round. (Also my fav of those I've received from Brian.)

Nicole's Mix:
I'd heard of, but had never actually heard most of these bands.
Don't really get it. I mean, you can appreciate the groove a couple of the tracks have, but the heavy, slogging, churning feel of the disc makes me uncomfortable.
I've gone over this disc 3 times. I like the flow, like the groove, do not like the feel.

Great artwork, Nicole. (As always)

Just a quick note to let you know that I'll be late in sending my mix. I want to put some songs that I only have on vinyl and haven't had time to encode them. And I'm scratching my head over how I'll be able to cram all the songs I want on 1 CD (damn techno tracks that never run under 5 minutes!). I had a list of 14 songs and it seems I'll have to remove one, and now it doesn't flow as well and the tracklist looks a bit short. Anyway, I'll try to finish it by next week-end. I don't think it's much of a problem though, given that I still haven't received Mel's and Remi's CDs. I'll do a review of Brian's mix as soon as I can.

Yeah...sorry about that. Its actually made and everything, just as i said, surprise deadlines, and surprise exams...make for interesting times,l et me tell you. Unfortunatley, they also make me very forgetful.
This one will be my last mix, because i just dont have the time to do it, and was a bit silly trying to do both of the swaps.
However, It will definitely be coming. i swear! just very delayed.
