THE DREAMERS
'Cept for the female lead's dinner plate sized nipples, nothing impressed me.
A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE
Fantastic - and Mario Bello, good Lord.
THE SQUID AND THE WHALE
Good, not great.

The Hills Have Eyes. Well at least this one was better than the original.

Yeah, they explain that the "Deaders" are a suicide cult in Romania. Whatever. It's a horrible title.
Last night, I watched "Caligula." There were a lot of sex scenes, and a lot of bare asses. Some of it came off as a bit gratuitous, like this one girl-on-girl scene that didn't seem to have anything to do with anything else. For the most part, though, I think it set the mood more than anything else. I mean, you can't make a movie about a crazy, perverted emperor without at least implying some crazy and perverted stuff, right? I didn't love it, but I don't agree with Roger Ebert's zero-star assessment, either.

"Match Point," the first Woody Allen movie I've enjoyed in many moons. Is Jonathan Rhys Witherspoon supposed to be handsome? I don't get it.

Being funded by Penthouse Films, those porn scenes were added.
Saw Spider last night, strange and intriguing stuff. Very nicely shot by David Croenenberg.

Watched Grave Of The Fireflies last night, a Studio Ghibli anime movie based on a semi-autobiographical book about the struggles of a Japanese boy and his little sister during WWII. Wow. What a great film. I was actually moved to tears. It's not just a very moving film, it's just beautifully crafted;it moves along very naturally, but it's never boring. Roger Ebert belives it belongs in a list of the greatest war movies of all time, and I can see why. It's maybe the best 'adult' animation I've ever seen.

I watched The Sound of Music. It really is "The timeless classic every family should share" as the box so confidently states.
I actually was quite touched as I watched it, and the music is beautiful. If I were a girl I'd be all over the captain as well.

No kidding...Maria Bello is incredibly hot. She was my favorite thing about that movie.
(Had to throw that in to make up for my previous post's sexual ambiguity)

Yes and Julie Andrews was/is a hottie. Mary Poppins also holds up well for family fare. |

Ghost in the Shell, not as blown away with it as I would have been if I'd seen it when I was sixteen when it came out. I've gone soft from watching too much Miyazaki stuff.

I really liked that, actually. If you haven't seen it already, you should check out Grave Of The Fireflies (which I mentioned above), Bar, it's directed by Miyazaki collegue Isao Takahata.

Inside Man - Spike Lee's best since Bamboozled. Clive Owen is the man. Denzel was great as usual. Great story. And best of all the pizza they gave the hostages to eat were inside boxes with the Sal's logo on them, a la "Do the Right Thing."

I'm working on my Studio Ghibli collection Carl. From what I've heard Grave Of The Fireflies sounds like an interesting watch. I've got Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle. I really want to get My Neighbour Totoro, Castle In The Sky and Porco Rosso, all of which I have to watch with my neice. I havn't seen Avalon Cassandra is, "Videodrome or ExistenZ are much much better in that sort of thing" and much better then The Matrix which ripped alot of things off from Ghost in the Shell.

I saw "Hellworld," the eighth and last (for now, anyway) movie in the Hellraiser series. It pretty much sucked, but my completist tendencies required me to watch it.

As I'm sure your aware, the Ghibli collection has been reissued recently (actually, I'm sure many are being given a DVD release for the first time). Funnily enough, they had the new collection edition of Spirited Away for €8.99 in HMV, although the original 2-disc version is the better release it seems. I have that and the excellent Princess Mononoke (and GOTF, of course). I'd like to check out Howl's, maybe I'll rent it first! One annoying thing about the release of Princess Mononoke I have, is that the subtitles are only for the English track!

Mario Bava's Hatchet For The Honeymoon. Good fun psycho killer movie, some wonderful camera shots. Also watched a good doco about Bava, which, ridiculously, didn't name the folks interviewed for it. Some of them you'd know, other's it's like...."Why didn't they put the names on the screen?!"

Actually, the Patrick Bateman character seems like he was inspired by the killer in Hatchet For The Honeymoon...at the start of that film, he's shaving and getting ready for the day, and talking in his mind about how insignificant human life is!!

HAVOC
The most unintentionally hillarious movie since GIGLI. I saw the trailer and knew it'd be great/terrible. Very worth it
Also, just watched the first 4 episodes of the last season of SIX FEET UNDER

Watched Kryzsztof Kieslowski's A Short Film About Love last night. Great. Not a typical love story, it really deals with the lonliness and isolation people feel.
