Space Cowboys - the second part (when they go into space) wasn't as good as I remembered, but the first half is really great.

V For Vendetta-Not as bad as some reviews I've seen suggested, it was a little bit obvious and clunky in parts, but watchable!

On Tuesday, I saw "Ginger Snaps 2," which was pretty good. It was less complicated than the first movie. And on Thursday, I saw "Word Wars," a documentary about Scrabble championships, which was interesting.

Watched over the last few days:

Capturing The Friedmans: Good doc film about a middle-class family from Great Neck, NY, who's lives were turned upside down when their father and youngest son were accussed of child molestation. It seems like the shocking stuff they were accussed off was perhaps completely fabricated, but the troubled father of the family definitely had paedophilic material and had apparently admitted commiting some offences against minors in the past. Dismaying, depressing, film, but it's worth watching.

The Cat And The Canary: Fun 70's humourous horror remake of an older film, about a bunch of people spending the night in a house where they have gathered for the reading of a will. Some nice, funny touches.

Vampyres: Saucy 70's lesbian vampire flick, with lots of blood. Great classic English horror atmos!

yeah, it's kind of dumb. It's kind of a huge pile of crap too. For fuck's sake, they cast Scarlett Johansson and manage to make her not look sexy. WTF

Yesterday I watched a movie with Vince Vaughn and John Travolta, which I have forgotten everything about today.

Heat last night. Good stuff. Lots of interesting trivia on the IMDB about it-Jon Voight's character was based on Eddie Bunker (Mr. Blue in Resevoir Dogs), and Denis Farina was a consultant on the film.

Saw Spike Lee's Inside Man and then later Black Christmas yesterday. Inside Man was a good hostage thriller, well directed and acted, with a sense of humour. Watched Black Christmas at a friend's house, good 1974 Canadian slasher movie, and as the DVD cover says, "before Halloween...before Friday The 13th...." and it really is notable for coming before these movies. Creepy stuff, with a touch of comedy here and there. Margot Kidder, John Saxon and Keir Dullea are in it, along with Olivia Hussey (saw The Cat And The Canary, which she appeared in, the other night), and, as my mate spotted, one the main actors in The Brood. Good stuff, with an ambiguous ending.

I bought that the other day in a sale. Great movie. I was just thinking of buying Howl's up in the video shop, they have it a bit cheaper than a lot of shops. The Studio Ghibli collection DVDs are quite generally pricey here, around the €30 mark, although Spirted Away seems to be going cheap everywhere.

I think I've watched it about five times now. All his movies are worth seeing. Watched The Good Girl tonight. Aniston was just about watchable in it, her face looks like it's made out of plastic and she's always looks like she's afraid to touch her hair in case she messes up her famous locks. Apart from it being a nice little black comedy it's got some of my favorite people in it, Zooey Deschanel and John Doe. I watched The Girl On the Bridge last night as well. Really beautiful looking love story with Daniel Auteuil and Vanessa Paradis. I really liked it, plus I didn't realize Paradis is such a good actress.

Carl, Howl's is twentyfour euro in HMV for the two disc Studio Ghibli Collection and Steam Boy is only twentyone euro there as well.

On Saturday I watched The Ice Age 2. It bored me. I'm not a fan of this type of cartoons anyway (the only exception being Nemo).
Yesterday I watched The African Queen, starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. Good stuff.

A Peter Jackson double bill the other night:

King Kong: Which reminds me, I was suppossed to bring it back to the video shop yesterday!probably best watched in the cinema, but still packs a punch on the small screen. I like the use of eerie, spacey music in the spider pit sequence, kind of reminds me of part of some game, one of the Resident Evil games maybe, where there's lot's of horrible stuff going on but the music is oddly serene. I'm waiting for the extended edition before I splash out!

The Frighteners Director's Cut: I hadn't seen the normal version, actually. I enjoyed it, although it looses it's edge a bit towards the end. John Astin (Gomez in the original The Addams Family, and father of Sean, who of course plays Sam in the Rings movies) is great as ghostly cowboy The Judge, in fact it's a pity he isn't in more of the movie. And Jeffrey 'Reanimator' Combs is funny as the FBI investigator, he gives a kind of Jim Carrey-on-drugs performance! Also, I knew R. Lee Ermey was in it, but I didn't think he played a ghostly take-off of his character from Full Metal Jacket!! Look out for PJ as a piercing-encrusted biker!

(BTW, thanks for the heads-up on the Ghibli DVDs, Barry!)

Final Destination - lots of fun despite the average acting, bland characters and the lack of girls in underwear (it's a horror b-movie! There HAS to be girls in underwear!). The plot is great and the actions scenes were really good too. Makes me want to see both sequels.
