although i enjoyed LOST HIGHWAY, it really is a poor man's MULLHOLLAND DRIVE (a significant mood shift, two different realities intertwining, repeating characters, etc) with less capable actors (and a less hot leading lady, sorry Patricia Arquette). it felt like an amalgamation of everything Lynch has done in the past - gratitous sex (WILD AT HEART), a female in despair reaching out to a younger man for help (BLUE VELVET) with lots of fuzzy, frame pulsing cutaways (which he would use along w/ the multiple realities for MULLHOLLAND DRIVE). i enjoyed it, but it is not quite as good as some of his other films.

I think I prefer Mulholland, but LH is great.

I agree with Brian, out of all the Lynch films Lost Highway is probably my least favorite. It's still good but something is missing in my opinion. |

i appreciated LOST HIGHWAY more when i saw it again recently in the theatre. the writer was there to do a q & a afterwards which made it more enjoyable.. i think it's one of his more difficult films because it's hard to wrap your head around. but that's kind of what i like about it |

It has to be said, Patricia Arquette looks fantastic in it.

The Straight Story.
Couldn't help but to think of Richard Farnsworth's suicide for most of the movie, though.

Yeah, she does Carl. I like her better than Laura Dern who he seems to favor. I'm gonna have to go back and watch it, I remember their house at the beginning reminded me a lot of my Grandmothers house for some reason. It's been years, and I believe the only time I watched it was on Bravo so it had commercials and shit.
Straight Story is one of my favorite movies. One of the few films I bought the soundtrack for, something about the music they play when it shows him on the road almost moves me to tears ...excuse me, I need a tissue. |

The Straight Story is really moving. It was a real change of pace for Lynch. Great music too. I only realised a while ago that Richard Farnsworth is the sheriff in Misery!!

I you guys enjoyed Lynch films, I advise you have a look at Jodorowsky's films:
El Topo & The Holy Mountain.
You'll understand why David Lynch is such a huge admirer of Jodorowsky's work and the influence these films had on David's style.
IMO it's like that pop phenemon that occured in the 90's between a band from Boston and another one from Seattle...

I sure you've mentioned him before, hWolsky. I've only seen Santa Sangre, that was quiet good. I can see how Lynch would be influenced by him.

The Devil's Backbone, right? Haven't seen it, but I'd like to. The director's cut of Hellboy is coming out on R2 in a few days.

Nobody Knows - Four kids are left to survive on their own in a Tokyo apartment as their daft mother runs after work and men. An excellent film but could've been half an hour shorter.
King Kong over the week-end. It was allright.

Let's see. The last movie I saw was Hellraiser V, which was better than the third one, but weaker than the other previous films in the series.

North By Northwest is great of course, and Eva Marie Saint's performance is special for many of us guys, but I've never understood why so much is made of the scene where Cary Grant is waiting in the middle of nowhere and then attacked by that cropdusting plane. The scene is fine until the plane crashes into the truck. I mean, I understand that in WWII dogfighting fighter pilots sometimes hit church steeples, but how does this ultra-proficient cropduster pilot manage to hit a truck? Defies belief, or am I missing something? |
