Gerry.

Unfortunately an extremely dull film I thought. It does feature some of the most amazing cinematography and I loved the opening shot but after a while the lack of dialogue just becomes tedious.

Two guys get lost in a semi-desert. One snivels a lot, the alpha male guy eventually (out of mercy!?) strangles him not knowing they're a few hundred metres from being saved.

The story borrows heavily from a investigative journalism novel I read a few years ago, Journal Of The Dead. The book tried to understand the characters though. Seems like Gus Van Sant doesn't care to understand much, like in Elephant he's just ellegantly shooting the "action"

Anyone here saw this and maybe liked it?

Minnie and Moskowitz, another Cassavetes film. This was actually very good, it was funny to see that dipshit elderly agent guy from "Stuck on You" was once a serious actor. He plays a parking lot attendant named Seymour. Gena Rowlands is some kind of lonely heart who's got shitty taste in men. Till the two of them meet, they fall in love, etc. Not your typical sacharrine love story though. I'd recommend it. I didn't know Gena Rowlands was such a fucking babe either!

I saw King Arthur last night. Clive Owen is such a bad actor. Possibly the worst ever. Despite King Arthur himself sucking, I still managed to enjoy this film. It was fun, nothing more.

Actually he wasn't too bad in Sin City, I forgot about that.

I seem to remember being irritated by him in Closer but perhaps that was his character. Anyway, he could have been an Oscar winner for every other film he has done, he still undid it all with King Arthur.

I must agree. BROKEN FLOWERS was a great film...Bill Murray is so fascinating you can just sit and watch him think for hours and not become bored.

Never saw CRASH, but I love the David Cronenberg film CRASH (1997).

Isn't that the one where car crashes are an aphrodisiac for the main character? I believe when that movie came out Ted Turner called it "The biggest piece of crap ever committed to film."

I like Cronenberg movies though, I think eXistenz is the most recent I've seen by him. It was very good.

You are correct, sir. However, what people don't know is that Turner never even saw the film. It was his secretary (who Mr. Turner would send out on movie-watching assignments) who told Turner it was awful. Turner poorly based his public statement on his secretaries taste. He later publicly apologized.

I have a love/hate relationship with Cronenberg films. I've seen them all multiple times and even own a few. I have yet to see A History of Violence. Cronenberg has such a wrong idea of character motivations, even within the strange circumstances that are warping them, that just completely fascinate and alternately annoy me. He even manages to wreck (with incredible beauty and subtleness) characters in his screenplays that are from other sources.

Cronenberg is a smidgen more disturbing, yet not as intelligent as David Lynch.

I thought you meant the more recent Crash film. I didn't think Cronenberg's Crash was as bad as some people thought. I thought the bleak ending was kind of interesting. A History Of Violence is okay, I wasn't that impressed with it. But it's interesting.

Both Cronenberg and Lynch are mavericks, but Lynch is so unique and otherworldly.

he's been shooting a film in [edit] Romania Poland for the past few years called INLAND EMPIRE, on the down low... it's (from what i hear) loosely based on life in Orange County, the "Inland Empire".. near my hometown

needless to say, i'm looking forward to it

any film he comes out with will undoubtedly be 95% more interesting than most other films coming out. i can't wait to see it.

i still lament the fact that MULHOLLAND DRIVE never got a chance to be the tv series it was intended to be. i like the film, don't get me wrong. but that had so much potential for another epic Lynch series...

Yeah, good movie. The scene where he spits out the cupuccino was strangely hilarious. Had such a weird tone to it. He's an expert at giving the most ordinary scene a very dark underlying tinge. That fucking corral scene with the cowboy. And who can argue the quality of a film with a cameo by Mr. Achy Breaky Cyrus?

As I recall, none of the networks wanted it for a series which seems odd being that Twin Peaks is/was so popular.

Oh man, but what about Ziyi Zhang? I was looking forward to seeing it just for her.
That's on my list, as well as Munich & Kong.

Brian, is that the French series? I remember seeing "White" years ago, but all I can remember about it was some guy having his identity erased.

I saw "Miller's Crossing" on Sunday night. I've liked most of the Coen Brothers films I've seen, but didn't care much for this one.

Yes, it is the French series Nathan. I am looking forward to seeing WHITE and RED quite a bit.

I'm surprised you didn't like MILLER'S CROSSING. I bet its because of that mannish woman - i forget her name.

Nah, I just didn't think the dialogue was really up to snuff for the Coens. It probably didn't help that I kept nodding off during the movie, though.

Smile, the Brian Wilson film. I should mention that I've never been a huge Beach Boys fan, but so many champion this guy as a legend that I wanted to check it out. Maybe he was the aural mastermind that many say he was but for these performances they just kind of propped him up behind a piano (that as far as I can tell he never touched) flanked by two computer monitors to hand feed him the lyrics. The music sounded okay I guess but it seemed liked this one guy in particular with a crazy hair do did most of the work and the B man just showed up when everything was ready to go.

I will say that even though I didn't care much for it at least he got out there and tried to realize the record a lot of people obviously were waiting a long time to hear. And the makers of one of my favorite records (Mr. Bungle's California) have alluded that their record is pretty much a Beach Boy rip off although a bit more schizophrenic.
