I need some advice. I'm taking a plane next week and I'd like to know when I should take a nap and when I should watch the movie. We're gonna be shown:
- "Surviving Christmas", starring (!) Ben Affleck - "Sky High", starring Kurt Russell - "The Island", starring Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson.
Thanks in advance.

Watched Deep Red tonight, it was the uncut director's cut, and though myself+mates watched it in English, some of it was in Italian with English subtitles, because parts of the original English language track are missing! Anyway, it looked incredible remastered on DVD, really stylish and vibrant! One of my fave Dario Argento films, it stars David Hemmings and Argento's ex-partner, Daria Nicolodi, who is Asia's mother!!

A while back I stated Mr. Argento could do no wrong and someone said they thought OPERA sucked which I'd never seen. Whom ever that was, you were correct. It kinda blew. |

I watched about half of Killing of a Chinese Bookie last night. John Cassavetes' filming style is pretty strange in an ambling sort of way. The same as A Woman Under the Influence. You could see how most people would lose interest very quickly watching his stuff.

I saw "The Wiz" last week. It was weird, but I still liked it. It's weird that Richard Pryor (who played the title character) died so soon after I saw the movie, though.
In the same week, I watched "Roger & Me," which was depressing.

You went to a preview screening?! It's getting mostly amazing reviews! BTW, floop, are you serious about Michael Moore?
RIP Richard Pryor.

I first read this as "Roger Me", which would surely be in no way depressing.

Oh my fucking god. I just watched "9 Songs" and I can't recall the last time a movie bored me as much. What was the conceit? What was the point? It was three seemingly unrelated plots mooshed together. Plus, the actress totally put me off, what with her fake American accent and boy body.
Homers? Anything to say in defense of this ho-hum abomination?

Watched first half of QB VII last night...getting the second disc from NETFLIX today. Very good TV movie from 1973, and what a cast! Ben Gazzara, Tony Hopkins, Leslie Caron, Lee Remick, John Gielgud, Joeseph Wiseman, Julian Glover, Alan Napier...very cool.

i watched the Scorsese Dylan documentary NO DIRECTION HOME on dvd.
it's hard not to like Dylan, though he seemed kind of like an asshole when he was younger.. it was nice to see him in some present-day interviews seeming like less of an ego-manaical freak. i guess it's hard not to get that way when everyone worships you..

Just watched King Kong. The movie is good. Great special effects. Only one real complaint. Some of the scenarios that went down were completely unrealistic. Like the brontosaurus stampede scene, shooting off giant crickets with a out of control machine gun, a chick running around New York in the middle of winter for who knows how long with out a coat on with out a single shiver. Stuff like that.

oh how i cried like an idiot at king kong. really good movie but the action scenes totally wiped me out. the one with kong fighting 3 t-rexs with one hand - after i thought to myself "well he can't sustain this for another 5 minutes" it went on for 15. maybe jackson felt the need to make up for the slow first hour becase the second one was brutal.
it did have the creepiest "natives" i think i've ever seen in a movie, not to mention the bugs. this is not a movie for people with bug issues. i could hear grunts and moans all over the theater during that part.
i am sitting here observing my emotional discomfort. |

This review sums up Kong well.
As amazing an achievement as it was in its time, the 1933 "King Kong" can be a challenge to watch today. With issues such as rippling fur on the stop-motion Kong's fur or the attack by the carnivorous brontosaurs, you have to bring a lot of imagination to the epic – and maybe wish for something better. (Something far better than the pedestrian 1976 remake.)
Peter Jackson's "King Kong" is that something better, a lavish reimagination of the RKO original that wraps itself around you as the protagonists travel into the unknown. It's not a perfect movie, but it's an adventure film for people who love adventure films – with plenty of action, romance and tragedy.
Plenty? Maybe too much at times. As with "Revenge of the Sith," seeing the special effects on the big screen is an experience worth paying for theater admission, but some of the sensibility is over the top. It's not just a matter of scale (tiny humans and giant animals), but one of tempo and contrast as brief and intimate moments of character development are followed by minutes-long chase scenes.
One example: When the rescuers try to rest in an ancient ruined alley, they're forced to flee from stampeding brontosaurs and wind up running among the herd of giant beasts, dodging back and force and eventually facing the raptors that triggered the stampede. And I'll avoid spoilers, but the scene takes several additional turns from there.
The scene is one of several that amaze, then please, then require extra suspension of disbelief, and eventually may cause you to think "That's just too much," even for a movie about a mist-shrouded island chock-full of prehistoric creatures. (I'm reminded of the equally fantastic but flawed "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow," in which each act moves on to increasingly implausible developments which eventually derail the plot.)
But Kong keeps coming back to its core storyline and developing its characters and their relationships – and serving up lavish imagery ranging from Kong himself to the fully-realized island and 1930s New York. Kong may be dwarfed by Manhattan's skyscrapers, but "Kong" will long rule over the genre.
And despite the dangers that abound in Kong's company, you'll probably wish you could spend more time on Skull Island – a feeling that will probably help propel sales of "Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie" (as if there will be unofficial ones) and the "King Kong - Peter Jackson's Production Diaries" behind-the-scenes DVD set already on the shelves.

I saw "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" last night, and it was better than I expected it to be (not that I expected it to be bad). Very faithful to the book, and quite visually appealing. I found this vision of Narnia pretty believable.
I don't really have any desire to see "King Kong," but if I change my mind, I'll probably want to see the original first.

I would recommend seeing King Kong. There were scenes in there where I thought "they must be using a real ape here? This isn't CGI?". I mean, what you were dealing with was a giant gorilla. Not some dopey thing that looks like a gorilla, but acts human. On that respect it was done very well. I had this issue with there apparently being only one gorilla on this island, but they even covered that base. Over the top at times but still worth seeing for sure.
So Vovat, go to the movie you... you... little... Vovat.

Saw King Kong on Thursday. Loved it, except that I kind of wanted more New York action from Kong, but that's just me being hard to satify-Peter Jackson set out to make a straight-forward update of the original, and by cracky, did he ever. The effects are superb, but Kong really stands out, so real!! And I like the way they didn't humanise him, he really is a giant Silverback gorilla, but he falls for Ann Darrow like a pet growing to love it's owner. Action, adventure, romance, chills, thrills, spills, humour, horror, terror, drama, tension, suspense-who could ask for anything more?! Oh, and there's a cool little Braindead in-joke, which I won't spoil for anyone who hasn't seen it yet!

I saw "Hellraiser IV: Bloodline" on Friday night. It had some corny parts in it (like the whole space station thing), but I liked it better overall than the third one.

WE DON'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE
Pretty good, if you like the type of film that has no real sympathetic characters. Everyone has some fucked up part of them brought to the surface throughout the film. My only real complaint is that i cannot see Peter Krause as anything but Nate Fisher from SIX FEET UNDER. And that is my own fault - he's just so natural of an actor that he seems like he is Nate.
