I finally saw "Eraserhead" last night. I thought it was interesting, and disturbing in parts. Very slow-moving in spots, though. I wonder if it would have worked as a short film. Maybe not.

Earlier I watched Zombie Flesh Eaters at a friend's house. Pretty gruesome stuff, starring Tia Farrow and Ian McCullogh. There's a fantastic sequence with a zombie fighting a shark, and the notorius splinter-in-eye scene. Not for all tastes, obviously. It was an amazing transfer, though, my friend has an old VHS copy, this restored DVD version looked incredible.

That the Cash documentary Kathryn? Haven't seen it but would like to. Was it any good?
I just watched Down By Law on my afternoon off from work. I'm working my way through Jarmusch films in backward chronological order as his films are so hard to get to see here. His films are getting better with each earlier film I watch. Down By Law definately now my favorite film of his.
Now I need to see Stranger Than Paradise

Indeed it is the Cash movie and they're gonna feel some Oscar love. The acting and singing were both great.
However, the movie portrays Cash's demons as pacified by the time he was 40. I wanted to see the fat Johnny Cash years, the stale concerts, the illustrious drug regressions. It could have been far more comprehensive. For example, it would have added dimension and complexity to delve into his relationship with Roseanne (who once said her musical mission was to put the cunt in country, but I digress).
Cash's lifelong themes are sin and redemption. Disappointingly, the movie dumbed his life down to romance and how a woman's love transformed him -- but it did not, he struggled with addiction his whole life, even after June agreed to marry him.
The movie should have at least included the epochal moment when he's so strung out he collapses by the side of the road somewhere outside of Nashville and crawls into a cave for two days. He is sure he is there to die, but has a spiritual awakening and crawls out to start a new life - at least for a while.
Cash was terribly flawed and fundamentally good at the same time. The tension between the two and the musical fruit borne of it is what most people don't get. They come down on Cash because he sung about being in prison without ever having served. I argue that Cash was always in prison, held captive by his demons in a cell so confining he took to music as a way to navigate himself out.
OK. I'll stop now. I feel strongly about Cash.
P.S. See Jarmusch's Year of the Horse (Neil Young + Crazy Horse)!

Nice review Kathryn. Didn't he serve a few years for drug possession? That may have been after the songs he had sung. |

I wept writing that. No seriously. He didn't serve any time in prison. And he got shit for writing the many "convict" songs he sang.
Go see the movie, darwin. Mrs. Darwin will dig it, I think.

Aeon Flux - I like it very much. Not sure it was cast properly but very enjoyable all the same.

In the realm of the senses - Infamous because of the sex but there are a few good moments, the best when there is no bonking going on.
The local indie record store imports DVDs from these guys: www.madmancinema.com.au They're cheap and they've got Jarmusch stuff!
Kathryn, I've ordered the Neil Young/ Jarmusch

MYSTERIOUS SKIN.
I've always hated cheap Gregg Araki. His films are stupid.
But this one was sublime. Very good story. I think. I dunno. I'm confused because I hate Gregg Araki. Yes. It's good unfortunately.

Dogma....finally, had the DVD for ages, but never watched the last bit....actually a lot better than id expected, its not even that offensive if you think about it, a hell of a lot less offensive than the passion of the christ anyway, if i was god i know which film id choose ...and god must have a sense of humour, afterall she did invent the platypus. |

Watched Deep Red tonight, it was the uncut director's cut, and though myself+mates watched it in English, some of it was in Italian with English subtitles, because parts of the original English language track are missing! Anyway, it looked incredible remastered on DVD, really stylish and vibrant! One of my fave Dario Argento films, it stars David Hemmings and Argento's ex-partner, Daria Nicolodi, who is Asia's mother!!

Charade. Directed by Stanley Donen, starring Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant. Unfortunately it was the French version, but it was still very enjoyable.

Yeah, they suck. I thought at least they'd show it in both languages on cable but they didn't. Most of the movies shown on prime time by Arte are in French now. I've missed a bunch of movies recently for this reason.

Mysterious Skin is one of the best new releases I've seen this year. Yes, it is hard to believe this came from the same guy who did that Doom Generation shit.
I loved the Mysterious Skin soundrack, I'm hunting down those Slowdive songs now.
Transmarine, have you seen L.I.E. ? It has a vaguely similar feel to Mysterious Skin and features a brilliant performance by Brian Cox.
