I liked "The Devil's Rejects."
I just got the new Wizard of Oz DVD set for my birthday, so I watched the movie with commentary last night. It was pretty cool. There are also some of L. Frank Baum's own silent movies in the set.

I'm probably biased because I remember the movie from my days as a youngster, but so many classic lines.

Yeah, there was'nt a whole lot to that. I suppose it was a mood piece more than anything, but some of the voiceover dialogue was cringe worthy. I have a bit of a crush on the actress (Margo Stilley).I was surprized to find she had a part in Nathan Barley:

And besides the warped amount of sex mixed with violence there wasn't one original idea in the movie. It may as well have been called the Texas Chainsaw ripoff.

Oh yeah, saw Silver Bullet last night. A Stephen King adaptation, some of it was good, other parts were corny and stupid. The music was awful, really generic 80's synth-pop rock. Gary Busey, Laurence Tierney, Everett Mcgill (from Twin Peaks) and Terry O'Quinn (The Stepfather movies, Lost) were in it. Carlos Rambaldi, the guy who created ET, did the werewolf.

Here's a converted critic:
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2101-1864699,00.html
The Sunday Times
November 13, 2005
Film: Finally wild about Harry
At last, a Harry Potter film that’s scary, sweaty and, yes, really dark — converted Cosmo Landesman is all fired up I have disliked all three Harry Potter films. And I expected to dislike the next 346,000 Harry Potter films. So, with poison pen in hand, I sat in the cinema ready to practise the dark arts of film criticism. This time, Potter, I gleefully told myself, I will destroy you with my withering one-liners and sadistic acts of sarcasm. You’re finished, Potter, finished! Then something strange and unexpected happened: the lights went down and I fell under the spell of Harry Potter.
Mike Newell, the first British director of a Harry Potter film, had the difficult task of following in the admired footsteps of Alfonso Cuaron and his Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. But I think this is the best Potter film yet, for one simple reason: it’s not like a Harry Potter film.
Past Potters were exclusively focused on the trials and tribulations of our young hero. And yes, there are plenty of displays of Harry’s heroism here, too. But the narrative focus of this film isn’t confined to his story. This one is more about the trials and tribulations of being young, and taking those first nervous footsteps into the sweaty swamp of adolescence. It’s more teen film than fairy tale. If John Hughes (The Breakfast Club) were to do Harry Potter, it would look like this.
For the first hour, Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) is really just a spectator of events. After a quick dream sequence, the film really gets going with Harry, Ron (Rupert Grint), Hermione (Emma Watson) and co going to a huge stadium to watch the Quidditch World Cup. In the past, I’ve always thought Potter’s big set pieces and special effects never had that shiny American Star Wars dazzle. They were always so British: a Wimpy burger in the age of the Super Size Me mega-Mac. But Newell makes George Lucas look like Mr Low Budget. The opening stadium scene, with its massed crowds and teams on display, is a vibrant and brilliant spectacle by any standard. When an awed Harry looks around and says “I love magic!”, you know what he means.
Back at Hogwarts, everyone is excited about the forthcoming Triwizard Tournament, involving three European schools of wizardry. Whereas opening scenes set in Hogwarts usually involve silly supernatural pranks and a gaggle of great British thespians hamming it up, Newell lets rip with a terrific pageant of the different school champions who will become Harry’s opponents. And he has managed to make Hogwarts look like the greatest school in the world, one that any kid would gladly sacrifice their parents on a bloody altar to get into. (On the other hand, Harry has been there for three years, and as far as I can tell, the only thing he’s learnt to do is fly on a broomstick and cast two spells, one of which doesn’t prove very effective.) Anyway, when the Goblet of Fire chooses Harry to enter the competition as well, the whole school turns against him. Once again, Harry has to face a familiar foe: celebrity. “I don’t want eternal glory,” he says. But eternal glory wants Harry, and it nearly costs him his friendship with Ron, and his life.
The Triwizard Tournament involves three dangerous challenges, providing Newell with three big set pieces that he pulls off with gusto. The first involves stealing a dragon’s egg. Here the CGI dragon looks fantastic, although its egg looks like one of those Terry’s All Gold chocolates. But the best scene involves Harry growing gills, having to go underwater to rescue friends and encountering scary mermaid creatures along the way. It’s a beautiful and haunting scene you won’t forget.
Ever since the Potter series was launched in 2001, we’ve been told that the following Potter film is going to be really “dark” and “edgy”. And they never have been, at least till now. This is the first Potter film to raise the question: is it too scary for under-12s? Yes, definitely. But the scariness is never shocking, gratuitous or bloody. It’s scary because you can’t go into the dark world where evil, in the form of Lord Voldemort (wonderfully played by Ralph Fiennes), lurks and leave ’em smiling. A central message here is that you can’t wrap kids in cotton wool: they need challenges that are scary, even dangerous.
There’s also another Potter first, in the form of sex. Nothing overt — unless you count a topless Harry in a soapy tub, but we see the boffinish Hermione (Emma Watson) turn into a beauty, and Harry has eyes for the foxy Cho Chang (Katie Leung). Fighting evil is one thing; asking a girl to a the school ball proves far tougher.
Radcliffe’s performance as Potter is the film’s weakest link. Yes, he can grunt and groan with the best of them, but conveying any kind of mood, be it fear or happiness, is just beyond his grasp. What Radcliffe can do is stand there and look ordinary, and this he does rather well. But Newell has used his Great British Thespians (Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman, Michael Gambon, Miranda Richardson, Brendan Gleeson et al) sparingly, and has allowed this to be the youngsters’ film. For me, Watson is the best of the bunch, and in Grint we have a new Dennis Waterman in waiting. I never thought I’d say this, but I’m actually looking forward to the next episode of Harry Potter.

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. From what I understand it hasn't been released in the USA yet. It's a movie by and with Tommy Lee Jones. It won 2 awards at the last Cannes Festival, and I think it's a bit overrated but it was pretty good anyway. It starts like your typical nice landscapes/good morals movie but it's actually more than that. I liked it.

Forgot to add some Frank-related trivia: Levon Helm stars in the movie. He plays an old blind man in a short but excellent scene.

My friend's just asked if this is the consequence of school uniform not being compulsory in the States. He has no tact. |

Yesterday I watched Notting Hill. I did'nt find it very funny, it had it's moments. It kind of tries to make a comment about stars and the media, but ends up being a bit cringe worthy. It had some nicely done scenes, but ultimately it turns into an annoying bucket of romcom vomit. Julia Roberts is always nice to look at, though.

I just watched "Unleashed" with jet Li and Morgan Freeman. Pretty good! I would recommend. I just watched george Romero's "Land of the Dead" This movie sucked ass beyond thunderdome.
Then I watched "Mountain Walking With Homer" This a coming of age story about the epic struggle between a boy, his bike, a 30 pack of Coors and 4 Bud light's he stole from his buddy, when he wasn't looking. Highly recommend!

SHATTERED GLASS
how did the same guy who played Stephen Glass play Anakin Skywalker? Haden Christiansen was QUITE good in this. a very enjoyable film, especially for a trio of 'movie savers' - Peter Saarsgard, Hank Azaria, and Steve Zahn (who will never play a role over 30 i'm convinced)
