Yeah, I don't think its that much of a disgrace not to have seen it. However, I have now - are you happy?
I wasn't so struck on Dawn Of The Dead though - I actually preferred the remake, which is most unusual for me. For example, Evil Dead was genuinely scary in some places, whereas Dawn Of The Dead was all a bit slow, and the zombies just weren't frightening in the slightest. You could outrun them by stepping up your walking speed a fraction.

Whereas, you can never outrun the trees!

Yeah but Dawn Of The Dead is funny. Granted, so is Evil Dead, but erm.....I forget my point. Oh yeah, Dawn Of The Dead is funny.

I guess. I see the satire in it, consumer culture and all that. I still preferred Evil Dead though.

Ms Tre, you seem to be an expert in the field - I have now joined a net rental type thingummy and am currently stocking my queue with zombie esque flicks. Any suggestions? As in, for pretty much a novice.

I am thinking of joining one of those Simon, which one did you join?

I just finished watching The Station Agent and I really enjoyed it. All round, very good. Excellent script and acting, quite moving in parts.

A refreshing change.

last night i watched Water Drops on Burning Rocks - a French indie film of a German play written by film maker Rainer Werner Fassbinder. It was interesting and easy to watch, plus the female lead was cute beyond control. Tonight i shall try and tackle Wild at Heart again...

hey holiday, i too saw panic room for free - i had gone to see another film (the painfull unfunny death to smoochy) and upon walking out, saw the empty lobby and panic room was starting, so my friend and i went in. it wasn't worth the six dollars i paid to see both

Saw "Monster's Ball" 3 nights ago. Enjoyed it very much.

Watched "The King is Alive" last night. Also very good. Thought it might be an Elvis-based oddity set in the desert (a la Bubba Hotep). Nope. It was part of the Dogme 95 collective, and it had a lot of similarities to a Lars Von Trier movie, which is a good thing. Made me want to read more Shakespeare again.

Brian, I hope I can see that one soon. I'm becoming a little obsessed with Netflix at the moment. It brings out the Type-A obsessive compulsive in me, all that button clicking and movie rating and adding. ahhhhhhh

edit: got Water Drops on Burning Rocks added! <maniacal laughter>

well if it's the comedy zombie films you like I would reccomend EVIL DEAD 2 (which is a remake of evil dead but slanted and funny) and also ARMY OF DARKNESS. For those who are liking the EVIL DEAD action you may be interested to hear that they are re-making it Sam Raimi with Bruce Campbell (Brucey C! MY HERO)

http://www.killermovies.com/e/theevildead/articles/4643.html

another fantastic comedy zombie flick which had me in tears is BRAIN DEAD the Peter Jackson classic (starring Peter Jackson and Bud Cort of HAROLD AND MAUDE er fame, yes fame)

on the serious side of the zombie genre ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS is pretty gruesome and some of the rest of the italian zombie films (i'm only just building up my collection of these) are pretty good too.

if you weren't so keen on DAWN OF THE DEAD (how??? HOW??) but liked the re-make (??) try 28 DAYS LATER which is more like this.

If you fancy giving Romero another go try NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (black and white version) which is slightly more serious and reminds me a lot of the recent(ish) film DOG SOLDIERS but with zombies instead of werewolves. DAY OF THE DEAD I have only seen once and remember being a bit crap.

Yes I am happy now you have seen it because it is a staple film of the zombie/horror genre and pure fucking genius. It was scary in places (like the cross-legged singing girl - eurgh) and funny and Bruce is a B-movie legend.

I think the strength and persistance is the scary factor of these zombies and the overwhelming number of them. Strictly speaking in Evil Dead it's zombification and posession hence the speed and weirdness of the dead in this film. I could go on for hours but will bring this to a close...

...by saying that off kilter from the zombie films if you watch BRAIN DEAD I would also suggest BAD TASTE which is funny as hell and if you don't mind a bit of eighties cheese THEY LIVE which is strictly an alien invasion film I think the premise is, starring Rowdy Roddy Piper is quite funny.

Oh last two suggestions in the funny old-school horror flick archives would be BASKETCASE and THE REANIMATOR.

actually probably not my last two but I need to get a coffee.

I can never remember if I liked Return Of The Living Dead or Return Of The Living Dead II. I know both are very similar but there's one I watched as a kid and loved, and another I saw later and didn't like. Which one has some girl dressed like a punk who becomes a zombie and does some kind of lame dance/strip-tease? I didn't like this one.

Gosh, they have BRAIN DEAD and BAD TASTE on this thing but not MEET THE FEEBLES! that sucks! Has anyone seen THE FRIGHTENERS? I think this is different to the first three but is it worth watching?

I've added RETURN OF THE LIVNG DEAD. I've also got on my list so far DELICATESSEN, DR STRANGELOVE (because I have never seen it all the way through without falling asleep) NORTH BY NORTHWEST, THE TOWERING INFERNO (I love them both and it's been a while) they don't seem to have THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE which is a shame. Also got SUSPIRIA and black books series one and two down so far.

How long does it take them to post these things cheese-nut? I've got CLOCKWORK ORANGE, THE GOONIES and ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOOS NEST for the interim but I'm not that patient.

Yeah, that's the first one. Weird you didn't like that one, because it's hilarious. Maybe it's a cultural gap?

i watched SHAUN OF THE DEAD a few nights ago.. i was going to post about it, but it was no longer "tonight".. thus, i'll reserve my review.

no, i enjoyed it. but i don't think as much as the people who recommended it . it was fun and moved quickly (it felt shorter than it was)..

i just had a hard time understanding people with their funny accents

Since the most excellent Big Lebowski, I can't stop seeing that
character whenever Jeff Bridges tries to portray anyone else.

Gotta also give props to John Goodman for his good contribution.

You're about to enter a world of pain!

GHOST WORLD was probably in my top 3 of the year 2000. (has it been that long?)

i'm really curious about Terry Zwygoff's ART SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL.. heard some interesting things (like, for one, that John Malkovich plays a female in it)

Probably in my top ten favorite movies. Whenever I go bowling with people, we try and recreate scenes, mostly its just me trying to be the Jesus. I also make it a point to say that I don't roll on the shabbos.

Thank goodness for Just A Minute and Mornington Crescent.
