the whole last part of the film is a complete parody of itself, and of Hollywood storytelling in general.. but i think people mistake it for having "a bad ending" when in fact, it is a parody of bad endings.. and of itself .

i agree tony - as soon as Charlie asks Donald for help with the script, it becomes ridiculous - it becomes a Donald (ie. McKee, ie. typical, poor) script

because he doesn't really exist, and since the film is supposed to be 'true' he couldn't be walking around after it

Well yeah I knew he wasn't real but I still don't see why he had to kill him. If Donald is just his other side then why couldn't it go on? We already knew he was not real so it wasn't like we would have been confused at the end if he had lived on.

well, the screenplay is credited to Charlie and Donald Kaufman, and outside of those really in the know, it could be totally conceivable (at the time of the film's release) that there was a Donald Kaufman. plus, it makes a film about trying to write a film about flowers end even more ridiculously, when 2 of the main characters (donald and laroche) are killed, it becomes a drug film, 'happy together' is used, the characters all learn new things about themselves, charlie and amelia profess their love for each other, etc.

I can't believe they nominated Donald for an Oscar.
To be fair I didn't know until recently that he even had a ficticious brother.

Not quite the cinematic masterpiece I was told to expect.
wilhelm
i, too, was disappointed by it
I watched it for a writing class in college and thought it was overly manipulative. Play some video in slow motion and put serene music behind it and it's a beautiful ballet and good. Speed it up and make the music more unsettling and it's chaos and bad. Blah.
Spot on Darwin. It was what the film fest pamphlet, luring me to see the film, should have said.

Saw Mystic River the other day. It was good, some may find the ending a little quetionable, but I think there was a point being made. :) |

Thirteen was mediocre - I'm still a bit confused as to what the fuss was all about with that one. Have to admit I'm slightly pissed off to hear that Catherine Hardwicke has directed it instead of Stacy Peralta. |

yeah, i don't understand the choice of her for directing.. but, i'm trying to be open-minded. i noticed Mark Mothersbaugh did the music, and David fincher is one of the executive producers. some interesting talent involved.. |

"Testamento," based on a novel by Germano Almeida and set in Cape Verde. Beautiful West African visuals, pretty Cabo Verdean dialect. Two thumbs up.
Also, WHERE IS RITA?

KINSEY - nothing wrong with the film - good performances, good script, etc. However, i'm a little sick of this Hollywood trend of taking a true story and presenting it without any style. AMERICAN SPLENDOR is an example of the opposite - a biopic that drips with energy, fresh ideas and a true love of the subject matter. KINSEY was just a cast of good actors, giving good (not great) performances, and some flacid Peter Sarsgaard penis. Nothing too special.

I've been getting those Army Of Darkness comics. There's also Evil Dead VS Reanimator, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre! Your not a cult movie 'til you've been rendered in comic form!! |

Just watched Crash. I had heard a bad review so i resisted seeing it, but i actually liked it. It does oversimplify things into a supersaturated message, but it was engrossing and I almost...ahem...<cried> once. I always like Don Cheadle. Star studded cast, actually.

I saw Sin City. Excellent stuff. that scene with the arrow going straight through that bad guy was pretty damn funny too. Elijah Wood had a good character I thought (if not the best lines).
Who was that guy in the opening and closing scenes? What was his purpose in the film?

I saw it yesterday. I've never read the graphic novels, but I thought it was probably the best realisation of a comic book style in the movies ever. A little silly and plotless, but thorougly enjoyable and very funny in places. I found some of the nastier subject matter to be a bit lame, in a way. Molesting and murdering little girls is not a great subject for pure, fictional entertainment.
Watched Mean Streets and Goodfellas over the weekend. Mean Streets look great on DVD. I'd like to listen to the Henry Hill/FBI guy commentary on Goodfellas, sounds interesting. |

The movie played out pretty much as I always imagined the Z-Boys, so it was like my daydreams being brought to the silver screen. Back around '79, I briefly knew a dude who skated with them and the movie backed up his stories.
I'm sure you'll recognize many streets in your neighborhood, floop. |

Saw this today. I agree, it is an excellent film. Good thing you posted about this Frog, I would've missed out on it otherwise. wilhelm |
