Is that a quote? Pretty cool!! I saw a tiny bit of that film, and was deeply suspicious of it, looked a bit 'Gen X'-lite to me!! Liv Tyler is a little stunner! ;) |

Living In Oblivion, with Steve Buscemi. Repo Man is one of my favourite films.

But yeah, a good film, especially thanks to their relationship. I love how the easygoing, laidback guy was morally corrupt and stayed that way while the fetal-position-assuming neurotic actually tried to work through his shit.
I still believe in the excellent joy of the Catholics
You saw him as morally corrupt? I can see why you think that, but I had a more sympathetic opinion. He was a good guy except for what he doing the week before his wedding. And, his last pursuit in the steakhouse made him seem more imbalanced or a slave to his needs (or need to pursue) than morally corrupt to me. Plus, he truly cared about his friend.
Solvang still sucks. The ecologist in me saw all of the beautiful scenery and couldn't help but think how great it must have been before all of the wineries ruined it. |

This week-end I watched the Spongebob Squarepants Movie. I'm a pretty big fan of the cartoon and to my delight they didn't ruin it all by making a movie. It was hysterical. The new characters (the king & his daughter) were terribly annoying but they had very few scenes, and the whole cyclops/Hasselhoff thing was brilliant. I got my new cult movie.

Yeah it's a quote from the end scene, as the credits are rolling. And yeah Liv Tyler is HOT in it.

I just watched Monster's Ball. Very very good. Berry was really on top form, as was Thornton (I like him as an actor).

Yesterday I watched SINGIN' IN THE RAIN and I was very disappointed. The plot is nearly non-existant and it just a pretext to shove as many musical numbers as possible. In fact musicals are like porn movies, without the porn. At least that's what I thought as my mind wandered during the movie.

darwin, I thought he was a good guy except for the fact that he was sure to be fucking around on his new wife. Also, I thought this was a case of being a slave to one's needs rendered one morally corrupt. But I did love that stuff with the waitress and the wallet and the scary loud music and the scary naked husband. Hilarious. (I have friends who live in Solvang. Now that's scary. )
Denis, I'm curious to learn in what way you view musicals as being like porn films without the porn. Are you alluding to the lack of plot?

i'm guessing he means that, like porn, there is very little plot and lots of dancing and singing (instead of fucking) |

I just got done with Punch Drunk Love. I enjoyed it, quite a bit. I really didnt' enjoy Magnolia, so was a bit skeptical of PT's work. PDL really made up for it though. What else has he done that I should look out for?
Oh, and I watched High Fidelity again last night. Such a fun movie.

You know I think of all the books I have read that have made it to the cinema, that was the most dissapointing. Not that it's a bad movie, it's a very good movie, it's just that the book is SO FUCKING GREAT!
Maybe it's partly 'cos the book was set in London, I dunno. I guess the book was never gonna win as far as I was concerned, seeing as it's one of my top 3 books of all time.

I agree that the book is brilliant and better than the film, but the film is great nonetheless. If only for Jack Black (who was born to play Barry). |

About a Boy is also excellent (both the book and the movie, though again the book is better). I was quite disappointed by Fever Pitch (the movie, haven't read the book). |

Yeah, I remember the movie Fever Pitch was so-so. I hav'nt read the book either(or any of Nick Hornby's books). Is'nt there a US remake coming out? It's funny how they set High Fidelity the movie in America, aiming for a US audience. |

Just watched Palindromes. I really enjoyed it. Right now I'd rank Solondz's films (that I've seen) as:
1. Welcome to the Dollhouse 2. Happiness 3. Palindromes 4. Storytelling

I watched The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremecy last night. I never fancied them much, but a lot of people seem to like them so I gave them a try and was impressed. Good fun, fast paced, keep you interested. And of course Franka Potente is HOT!

I hav'nt seen Supremacy, The first one was pretty good. The first Lord Of the Rings is on C4 tonight, have all the extended editions-still, it's nice to see it finally appear on TV, I was wondering when it would get shown on terrestrial TV. There's a documentary, 'The Quest For The Ring' on before it, might tape that. |

Both film versions (the UK colin firth and the US jimmy fallon) do not do the book justice (i haven't seen the US version yet, but its plain to see). the book is a journal of hornby's life vis a vis soccer. if there is a "plot" its very thin, but it is not intended to be taken as a story with a beginning, middle and end.
in the last two days, i've watched BULL DURHAM, THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN and PERMENENT MIDNIGHT.
i have a softspot for baseball movies, so BULL DURHAM satisfied that.
MUNCHAUSEN is thus far my least favorite terry gilliam film, but was still enjoyable
PERMENENT MIDNIGHT was one of the last dramatic roles ben stiller did before becoming a purely (and mostly bad) comic actor (save of course his masterpiece ZOOLANDER and his role in THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS). he plays jerry stahl, a writer who worked on ALF (here called captain something or other for copyright reasons) who was a heroin addict. worth seeing, and had some good moments.

I just watched The Motorcycle Diaries and it really touched my heart. What a beautiful, beautiful film. Easily the most touching film I have seen in a long time. I don't mind admitting I shed a tear or two.

Homer, I loved it too, it was one of the best movies that I've seen last year, on a big screen. Thing that I can't do a lot. But The Motorcycle Diaries really deserve it.
