I like Phantom of the Paradise but I'm not a huge fan.
And I think Scarface is by far his most overrated film.
But I'm one of the few who liked Femme Fatale and one of the fewest who liked Mission To Mars (well not all of it).

I've seen a lot of people dissing Scarface. Seems it had its glory days in the 80s/90s but it now looks outdated to many. Granted, it's an Oliver Stone script so it has its flaws, but it's still great. I've only seen it once though, whereas I've seen all of DePalma's movies dozens of times (OK, not really, I've never seen Raising Cain and Body Double).
I liked Mission To Mars too. Must be a French thing.

Shockingly, tonight I watched an actual movie
in a real movie theater, "Million Dollar Baby,' which
I liked except for the distractingly bad score, which
was penned by Clint. Pretty good for a Hollywood movie,
me thinks. They ought to give someone an Oscar™ or
something.

Oh and I also ate Peanut M&Ms for the first time. I was
not impressed. Turns out I prefer plain. Shoot! I've gone
off topic. Sorry.

'harold and kumar go to white castle' - pointless, ignorant and hillarious. especially the neil patrick harris cameo.

Hang 'Em High. Not clint's finest western but still pretty good. I liked the black shirt/jeans combo he was wearing, it was a good look he was rockin'. Cool bastard.

I had some time on my hands and a contract at the soon to be closing down DVD store so I watched Sunshine State, The Secretary, Pieces Of April and The Cooler of the last two days. All decent films.

I just watched The Village. This is one of those films I am not sure about. I really enjoyed it for the most part but I was kind of dissapointed by the twist, not because I saw it coming (how could you?), but because I didn't want it to happen. This is probably a bit lame of me, as the twist is what makes it stand out from other films in this genre (I'm trying my best not to spoil this for people who have not seen it), but I kind of wanted things to continue as they were going.

On top of that though, there quite a few holes you can pick in the storyline, but perhaps you are not supposed to. So overall I definitely liked it, I just feel a little dissapointed 'cos I'm a big stupid kid.

i really dug I HEART HUCKABEES. can't believe i missed this when it came out. for some reason i had this idea that it might suck, and people i talked to gave me lukewarm reactions. they were wrong. nice to see David O Russell go out on a limb and make a very personal, quirky, odd film (even more odd that his others). i thought everyone was great in it. very whimsical, funny, thought-provoking film. (kind of reminded me of Hal Hartley in a way, and, vaguely, Linklater's WAKING LIFE, which i loved)

DEEP RED, i hate to say, was a huge disappointment. the only other Argento i've seen is SUSPERIA which i thought was great. visually DEEP RED was interesting, but it was so fucking sloooooooow. i can't believe i made it through.

i really didn't like i heart huckabees. i don't know why, but it just didn't work for me.

i just saw and loved the Thrill Jockey 10th Anniversary DVD "Looking for a Thrill" which is nothing more than short interviews with fans, musicians, filmmakers and record label folks about the musical moment that either inspired them to play music, which set them on their current course, or some other musical revelatory moment. i cannot recommend this enough. it is long (they interviewed 112 people), but worth the wait. people interviewed include ian mackaye, mike watt, thurston moore, bjork, yo la tengo, and just about every non-joan of arc chicago musician you can think of.

i also really loved the music (HUCKABEES).. i think i'm going to have to get the score.

and i loved Mark Wahlberg in it. after PLANET OF THE APES i was questioning his talent.. but i think in the right role, he can be excellent

the score was one of the bright spots. i like jon brion's work.

and i think wahlberg is good if the cast surrounding him is good. he has talent through osmosis

i think it's the director too. Mark seems like he needs someone he can trust to let his guard down.. people like David O Russell or Paul Thomas Anderson probably connect with him better. i think on PLANET OF THE APES he was just collecting a paycheck

I've seen a bunch of films recently, but for some reason haven't posted about them. So rather than try and drudge them up from memory, I'll just talk about what I watched today.

Today I saw a couple of Todd Solondz movies. I'd seen both Happiness and Welcome to the Dollhouse a few years ago, but I think I was too young for them, and they went over my head. Today I re-watched Happiness (I left it feeling far from happy; more empty), and then I watched Storytelling, which was about as good, if not better. The reason I picked these movies up is because I just saw the trailer for his newest film Palindromes (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0362004/) and it looked really good, in a Solondz kind of way. It's going to be playing at SXSW, so I have yet another reason to envy everyone who is attending that festival.

Some interesting Solondz related info. He comes from Newark, New Jersey and most of his films take place in towns five minutes from where I live. In Happiness, there were a few scenes from my town, which I thought was way cool. Solondz has a nephew that graduated from my highschool last year, that I had an opportunity to play music with in a mutual friend's garage. I thought that was pretty neat.

i have mixed feelings about Solondz, but, i'll go see anything he puts out because i know it will be interesting.

there's a sneak preview of his new film here next week. might go check it out.

i liked WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE quite a bit. HAPPINESS veered too close to "just for shock value" for me, but it had some good segments. i thought the first half of STORYTELLING was an excellent short film. the second half kind of ruined it for me.

he does make interesting films though.. and he's a good writer.

Floop, when you saw Storytelling, did you see the unrated, or rated version? There is one scene from the first half of the film that has an interesting "censorship issue" in the rated version vs. the unrated.

Do you remember the teacher-student sex scene in the first portion of the film? Solondz has always been outspoken in defending his rights, and the rights of other filmakers not to be censored. In his contract with Tristar (I think it's tristar, I might be wrong on that though), he demanded that they could not censor any of his films beyond placing a red box over the offending material. So, in Storytelling, in the rated version of the film, when the sex scene between the teacher and the student begins, a large red box just pops up on screen and remains there for two or three minutes, over the fornicating couple. In the unrated version, you witness the sex, but in the R version, the one I guess you saw, the red box pops up.

Pretty cool on Solondz's part, I thought.

I just watched The Forgotten, I liked it a lot, it's a very good story and especially if you're a mother, you can see it in a different way.

i totally forgot about that Sir Rock. i remember now. there was a box. i remember the story about that too.. it's been a while since i saw it.

that writing class in STORYTELLING reminded me exactly of this writing class i took in school. down to the African-American professor etc..

I just watched Spun. It was OK, not bad. Perhaps a little style over substance, and I didn't need to see Debbie Harry dressed as a biker dyke, kicking the shit out of some punk. One of Billy Corgan's songs in it was very nice though.

I think the problem with me watching so many films at the moment, is that I am getting harder to please.

This week-end I watched The Life Aquatic which has just been released in France. I absolutely loved it. I haven't seen any other Anderson movies so I can't compare but this one had about everything I like: great characters, great soundtrack, tongue-in-cheek humour, great actors, fantasy, tits, emotion, live musicians, animation, a plot, scenes that don't bring anything to the story, a killer Devo song, sharks...
