Yeah.... agreed. Definately not life changing. Definately a good movie though. Quirky and cute and entertaining and good. Braff did a good job directing...but you're right it's not earthshattering.
Now I am watching Pixies on ACL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (A week late on PBS here but not a dollar short) |

My god those Japanese know how to make horror movies. I just watched Dark Water, and you know when people first watched Aracnophobia when they were a kid, and they had to check under the tolet seat when they went to the toilet? Well I have to admit that I had to face the bath when I brushed my teeth after watching Dark Water. Scary shit.
It takes quite a while to get going, I was starting to think that this was the first Japanese horror that wasn't actually that scary. Boy was I wrong. The last half hour has some really terrifying moments, it really builds into that period well. The direction is fantastic at times, especially the directors constant water references, and total sense of isolation.
Highly recommended for any other Japanese horror fans. Easily as good as Ring and The Grudge. I can't wait to watch The Eye and Audition now.

I'm on it Brian. Thanks a lot.
EDIT: I just went ot Amazon to add it to my list and I remember seeing it on there when I was compiling my list originally. It got rather mixed reviews so I decided to give it a miss. Seeing as you have now recommended it though, I have decided to add it to my list.

Oh man, The Eye is pretty scary. Just a few scenes provided to give you a chill. All in all though, it is very well directed; I agreee, the Japanese do make a good horror flick.

Yeah I am looking forward to The Eye. They even make the scariest covers too.
I have ordered a special edition version, which has another disc with three short horror stories from three different creators.

I just watched Miller's Crossing, I'm making the most of this internet DVD thing (like everybody else it seems!) to finish watching all the Coen brothers movies that I haven't seen.
I liked this one a lot, and I know its supposed to one of the Coens' best. I don't think I'd go that far, as there are several that I prefer, but compared to most other moviemakers this is a superb film. Very atmospheric, and some great performances - I liked John Turturro as Bernie and JE Freeman as Eddie the Dane. As usual, the soundtrack/score is brilliant and the style in the film is distinctly classy.
Interesting facts: cameos from Danny Aiello III and, best of all: 'snickering gunman' - Sam Raimi. Barry Sonnenfeld (director of photography): "it's a handsome movie about a hat"

Oh I nearly forgot, I just watched Elf earlier. I thought it started slowly, not a lot of laughs, and was beginning to think that the recommendations were looking a little strange. It picked up though, and made me laugh more as the film went on.
Not quite the hilarious film that some people have said, but pretty funny all the same.

i like Takeshi Kitano too. but not as much as Takeshi Miike.
have you seen VIOLENT COP? it's pretty violent
My faves are : Hana Bi, Brother (aka Aniki), Dolls, Zatoichi and Sonatine. Violent Cop, Kikujiro and Kids Return are ok. A Scene at the Sea, Getting Any? and Jugastu are quite boring/bad.
I hear that Sonatine is pretty bad on DVD. Apparantly the subtitles are all out of sinc and it was not an anamorphic transfer, so if you have a widescreen TV, then you have to zoom.
This has put me off watching it.
I also saw Brother get a couple of terrible reviews on Amazon, from big fans of Kitano. Is it really that good?

I just watched the Royal Tenenbaums again today. Every time I watch that movie I notice something new that I love. I don't know, its such a close tie between that and Rushmore for best Anderson film. I just need to find a copy of Bottle Rocket somewhere.

BEFORE SUNSET: totally agree with Atheist and broken face.. that's probably one of the best "romantic" movies i can think of.
ELF: saw that on the plane back from London. i was a little disappointed actually. after Speedy_m's glowing review. speedy, you owe me. no, it was okay.. but kind of cheesy. the snowball fight was the best part. i did recently rent "best of Will Ferrell on SNL part II".. can't get enough of the guy. i didn't think ELF was the best Will Ferell vehicle for some reason. maybe it was just the writing..
but, today i watched this weird french sci-fi thriller DEMONLOVER which i had heard was great but was hugly disappointing. it has so much promise, but ultimately nothing happened. fantastic cinematography though.. remined me very much of Lance Acord's cinematography in LOST IN TRANSLATION (one of the best things about that film)

yep this one is very bad. I haven't seen them but Irma Vep and Clean are supposed to be good. Or you could try any film by Desplechin (Esther Kahn is a good starting choice) if you wanna see good french films. |

i always want to see good films period. i was disappointed because Gavin Smith (film critic) gave DEMONLOVER a glowing glowing review when it came out. and usually i don't care what critics say, but he's one critic i always see eye-to-eye with. we seem to have the exact same taste.
not this time.

ANCHORMAN was semi-disappointing.. but better than ELF.

Yeah, Clean is good. Tricky acts in it (playing himself) and David Roback too. Don't know if it's gonna be released in the USA.

i think Ebert actually has good taste, but he's usually way too easy on movies. he gives thumbs up's to everything. but then, i have undying respect for him just based on the fact that he wrote BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS

It sucked.
But the pizza was good.
Does this count or should I take it to another thread?

Taking Lives is OK, not bad. It's was worth it just to fall in love with Ms Jolie. I was never a fan before that film.
I am going to watch Girl, interupted in half an hour. Any good?
