Some NY pedestrian tips I learned from David Letterman many years ago: -Talking to cab drivers in English wastes your time and theirs -It is rude to lay in someone else's chalk body outline -Taxicabs driving on the side walk always have the right-of-way -If it doesn't taste like chili, it probably isn't |

There's a cool record store on 3rd Ave near St Marks Place. St Marks is fun and skanky and you can also eat at The Kiev made famous by the song "Detachable Penis" There used to be a restaurant in the lower east side called "Stingy Lulu's" that had transvestite waiters on rollerskates. Every Sunday they would have an S&M show.

If I was going to New York, I'd see...
The Village Vanguard The building where my guitar was built (Gretsch Building, Brooklyn). Tin Pan Alley Sugar Hill, way up in Harlem Dizzy Gillespie's Coca-Cola Club in the Time-Warner Center's Fredrick P. Rose Hall (home to Jazz at Lincoln Center) at Columbus Circle, and definitely the Allen Room. Is that the longest name ever? The Soup Nazi. Birdland The Blue Note David Letterman The Knitting Factory CBGB's MTV, to moon the camera. The Chrysler Building. Can you tour the private lounge at the top? The Empire State Building. Madison Square Gardens, to pee on the building, the architect and city planners in effigy for tearing down the Penn station. ...
And I'd stay on the subway, because I have no idea where to stay, and who can afford it? |

my fav. ny spots:
- the museam of television and radio (if you go in the AM, you can reserve a 2 hour block, and then you can pick whatever shows from their library you want to watch/listen to - and their library is HUGE)
- cbgb's is a shitty club, but a landmark you need a photo in front of. ditto for the "joey ramone way" sign nearby
-if you're a geek, you can check out both the DC and Marvel comics buildings
-st. mark's for some good record shops
-little italy and chinatown for some grub
-the upright citizens brigade theater has improv comedy 7 nights a week and many shows are free, or very cheap. plus a lot of the BEST WEEK EVER (do you get vh1?) folk are UCB regulars
-there is a publishing co. called mcsweeneys that owns two stores in brooklyn. one is a regular bookstore with a twist (their stuff is fantastic). the other is a storefront to help finance a tutoring center called 826NYC - the storefront is a "superhero supply store" - there you can get costumes, utility belts, grappling hooks, etc. its an AMAZINGLY cool place to spend 30 minutes
-ride the subways a lot and listen to some street musicians
-check pollstar.com for some good shows and take in the smokeless venues w/ overpriced drinks
-try and get on the standby list to go see conan o'brien. or try and get daily show tickets
-the museam of sex is pretty interesting too
thats all for now...

I lived like thirty minutes from New York City for my enitre life, and I still doubt that I've seen all that there is worth seeing. I'd reccomend everything above as well. Wish I could offer some insight as well, but for me at least, no matter what I do in NYC, I have a good time, no matter what I'm visiting or who I'm with.
Turn the spit on that pig and kick the drum and let me down. Put my clarinet beneath your bed 'til I get back in town.

I hear you, B. I do think, tho, that what's left of restaurants in Little Italy is horrendously touristy.
My favorite Italian is on 2nd St in Alphabet City, Dave, and it's called "Supper." Fone # in the 212 is 477-7600. Trust me. It's classy and relaxed and fun with just a bit of juice (star power) but not too trendy, and the food will not disappoint you.

Panchitos in the Village is my favorite Mexican Restaurant. It is located on MacDougal St. Just around the corner is a record/CD shop on Thopmson St. called Generation Records. Just north and and a block to the west is Bleeker Bobs record shop on Bleeker street.
For a decent place to stay I'm sure there is a bench in Washington Square Park you can find.

Across from Pancitos is a cool bar called the MacDougal St. Ale House. They have new castle on tap. A block away across Sixth at 3rd there a cool record shop called subterranian records. Lots of vinyl, specializing on NYC bands. Lots of Lou, Velvets, television, etc. On Bleeker the peculiar pub, which is always backed but they have a gazillion types of beer, several, several hundred broken up, domestically by state, and internationally by country.
What else? Old bars-check out Chumley's for a real speak easy and has no sign or nothing, so its real tough to find. Its 86 Chumley st. That's where the phase 'lets 86 it' comes from. Near there, on west 4th and eigth of ninth is a bar called the corner Bistro, which has a hamburger that is repeatedly voted best in the city. The oldest bar in the city is a place called McSorley's one block south of St. Marks near copper union. They only started to let women in there in 1972. the village voice building is right there, so you can check that out. On st. Marks is my favorite bar, the Grassroots tavern. they've got pixies on the juke. Its also across from the famous St. Marks comics, which is in the building from the cover of the led zepellin record physical graffiti. There's a great old dive on sixth at canal called Nancy Whiskey's. Its real dank.
Check out the tree at radio city, go ice skaing, get an egg cream in brooklyn some where, ride the subway to coney island and get a hot dog at nathans. Ifs its open in december, ride the cyclone. I've only been there in the summer.
Good small clubs to see no-name shows include siberia by the port authority, tonic on the lower, lower east side, the sidewalk cafe, and sin-E. Get your ass to alphabet city, there's lots of bars, clubs, and neat shops over there.
And go to the Central Park Zoo. Its cheap and they have polar bears AND monkeys AND bats. And see the dinosaurs at the museum of natural history. they have a great planetarium there. I'll stop now.

Actaully, no shitting you, the NYU Bobst library is facing the park, and behind it there are these huge exhaust vents for the heating systems and it stays kind of warm, even in the winter. If you just gotta sleep outide skip the bench, its definately West 3rd behind the library all the way. |

Sleeping outside by large exhaust vents mid-December does sound authentic-NYC, consider it done. I'll bring money for newspaper. I'm not sure about these Pixies, I've never heard em (I'm not really into girl-bands), but maybe I'll have a girl's-night night and see them & 50' Wave. Since I'm there anyway.
There's some definite pubs I'd like to check out, my friends will also want to go clubbing (they were concerned about seeing the Pixies on a Sat night because they'd not be able to go to a club that night, to give you some idea) but I'd much prefer just some cool pubs. I especially like trying different food and beer from what we get here, so I imagine that I will be flitting around to try Kathryn's Italian restaurant, the burgers at the Bistro, the beer at Bleeker, etc etc. I'm beginning to realize just how short five days will be. Plus we have to do all the touristy stuff, like the big Christmas tree, Times Sq, Ice Skating, Empire State Bldg, accidentally ending up in the Bronx with my "white power" t-shirt and a placard saying "ghettout of my city", etc.
Thanks for all the recommendations so far. I am taking notes. I also have to do some Christmas shopping for my sisters while I'm there, something uniquely New York without being uniquely expensive. I mean, something in the $100 or so range. She is more trendy than cool, but I try.

Dean, gifts for your sisters? Why didn't you say so?
Go to Exit9 on Avenue A. Wait, here, check 'em out online first:
www.shopexit9.com
So you won't think I'm trying to confine you to Alphabet City, may I suggest you get off the island of Manhattan?
Go to Queens and check out the still-new MOMA outlet and/or go to Astoria, the Greek hood.
Tho my highly-recommended favorite Greek place is south of Washington Square Park, on Thompson Street and it's called Snack. Trust me on this one, too. It won't look like your typical ugly-blue-stripes- and-stupid-boat-chains Greek resto but the food's authentic, the atmosphere way casual, the booze selection plentiful and the vibe is hip. (You can even order bottled water from Cyprus, if you so choose.) Oh, and it's fairly cheap.
A plug for Brooklyn, if I may. The hot new nebes are Williamsburg and Red Hook but I wouldn't bother because if you want trendy you can stay in Lower Manhattan (so scratch W-burg off your list) and Red Hook is a painfully long subway ride (45 mins). So go to Brooklyn Heights! If it's a day with little wind and warm temps and you feel like walking, you might want to seriously consider walking across the Brooklyn Bridge, I shit you not (start out doing a little music-shopping at J+R Music World before you walk onto the bridge). Or take the subway to Court St.
Walk down stroll-friendly Montague Street all the way to the Promenade and gaze at Manhattan and Lady Liberty (a map will help you make sense of what I'm going on about here). Good sushi on the left as you head toward the water, great indie book store on the right.
One last warning to avoide Mulberry Street in Little Italy. Marty Scorsese won't be there, but boatloads of tourists from Omaha will.
I'll stop now. I've never heard of that girl band the Pixies. Go check 'em out and give us a report on their music.

Alright, we're now debating accomodations. I'm going with five guys. One wants to stay near the airport (La Guardia), one wants to bid on hotel rooms on the island, one wants to stay in New Jersey, one on the island in a hotel, and one in a hostel. Is public transit to/from Manhatten really accessible, or is it going to be a royal pain just to get to/from there every day if we stay in Queens or Jersey? Where would you stay? Is the convenience worth the potential extra cost of staying on the island itself?

Jersey will be cheapest, but take the longest to get to/from and the buses/trains stop at a certain time - queens will be cheaper than manhattan, but not as cheap as jersey, yet much easier to get to and from the things you'll want to do. if possible, i'd recommend queens of those three choices (manhattan, jersey, queens)
as far as a hostel is concerned, i don't know anyone who's ever stayed at a New York hostel, so sorry there Dean-o.

I guess you've tried the usual sites like priceline... but I've gotten some good deals there in the past. I don't know if it's still around but the hotel Pennsylvania was a good deal a few years ago. It's across from MSG and right by Penn Station. I want to think the rooms were $65 a night, but I can't remember. It's a little threadbare, but it's fine. Also there used to be some major jazz acts that used to play there back in it's heyday. Have fun Dean and please let us know what you thought of that show!!! For those of us who cant make it . Have a fun trip

Dean, maybe this will make me sound reeeeeeeeeally old but you might wanna spring for the big bucks and stay in Manhattan. A day trip out to Queens is fine but you do not want to be traipsing all over the five boroughs. Hostels can be skanky; near LaGuardia is probably cheapest but then you've gotta schlepp in from Queens; etc. etc. It's worth seeing if you can get a deal at:
http://www.newyorkerhotel.com/
which is on the same block as the Hammerstein Ballroom! Can't beat that for location, not just when you wanna stumble to your bed after the show but also when you want to catch a subway to anywhere in the city. Plus you'll be conveniently located not just on 34th Street but also directly across from Penn Station, the main subway/train depot.

Yeah, that's my thoughts too, stay on the island. You guys raise some good points. That New Yorker doesn't look bad, thanks K! Of course, $65 a night sounds great Daisy Girl, I haven't found anything in that price range even among the hostels on the upper west side. And I agree with you on Jersey, Brian. Seems like overkill to go all the way over there to save ten or twenty bucks especially when we're talking about adding significant commute times. Though I can't imagine the subway taking longer than a few minutes, or does it get quite lined up in addition to being packed/crazy?

bear in mind that subways don't run all night, whereas bars in NY stay open till 4am. if you end up taking a cab from the island to Jersey or Queens it'll run you about 30 bucks.

yeah - i live in jersey and so i know the reality of taking a cab to port authority and running down two flights of stairs to catch the last bus home and missing it, and having to shell out $40 for a cab. i love jersey, but for visiting, it makes more sense to just stay in the city. i'm excited about that show - its the last of 4 pixies shows i'm going to that week. hopefully, it'll be special as its the last show on the tour.
