I've been reading this book called Merchants of Deception, about this fellow's experience as a high-ranking member of the Amway organization. It's not very flattering to Amway and as I understand it, the author has received several death threats. Amway has always fascinated me and it's a very interesting read. It's a free book too!
When I first moved to North Carolina many years ago, some overly-friendly dude approached me while shopping at Wal-Mart, talking about a "big business opportunity" and that if I was interested, to come to such and such a location at such and such a time. Today, I'm a Double Diamond distributor and...just kidding.
I know Amway and it's evil twin Quixtar have a worldwide presence so anyone have any experience with them? Stories? Did anyone try to rope you?

I have no stories to report from Amway, but would be interested to learn more. You say that this book is free? Where could one obtain a copy?

My brother James was selling Quixtar. He was driving down to Baltimore for sales meetings and demonstrations on energy drinks and such. He got the whole family (except me) to buy everything from Quixtar's website, toilet paper, shaving cream, you name it. Then for my birthday last year, he gave me a $20 yearly membership to Quixtar, thus forcing me to be a member I think I rented a car through them or something, but that was the last I heard about Quixtar. Six months later over Christmas, I was having dinner with an old high school friend Kevin who told me a story about my brother. James had invited Kevin out of the blue to have dinner with him. When he arrived he was surprised to find James with a strange Ukranian man at the table who turned out to be a Quixtar representative. They grilled Kevin over dinner and tried to get him to sell Quixtar for them. Afterwards, Kevin did some research online and discovered that Quixtar and Amway were indeed one and the same. He called my brother and told him to break off any contact he had with them because they were evil and I guess he did because I've heard nary a mention about it since.
I've never understood my family's addiction to pyramid schemes. It seems to me that if they had properly invested the money they spent on supplies, instructional tapes, and promotional materials they'd have the extra income they were seeking in the first place. It's like the lottery. Obviously, the lottery makes a lot of money which means it pays out less than it receives. So what's the point? You'd be taking a better risk investing in random stocks.

Well Tim, I'm glad you're a more level-headed member of the family. I don't know if you've read this book or not but I can only describe the read as narcotic. As I said before, I'm really fascinated by this type of thing: organizations as big and powerful as this where the lower 80% of the pyramid knows about a tenth of what the upper 20% knows, yet are promised riches and freedom from slavery, never realizing that they're the ones funding the whole thing.
If this doesn't get turned into a movie, then I may have to take a few extra mortgages on the house and option it myself.
