Stay in the City, no question. Do not stay in queens or jersey. Do not stay near Laguardia (Shea stadium. yay!!). After midnight the subways start to run very infrequently. Like once an hour. I'm not sure about the PATH, but I assume its the same, plus there;s no taxis in jersey that late. You don't want to be stumbling out of blue and golds at last call at 4:30 and have to worry about getting an overexpensive 45 minute taxi off of manhatten. Bite the bullet and the entire quality of your trip goes up. Yay quality. Boo cheapness.

i agree with soundofataris.

Also, there are many a good record shop down on Bleecker up and through the Village...don't remember exact location (its been a while since I've roamed around NYC) but you are bound to find a huge assortment of used records/tapes/CDs. huge.

Dean, one last piece of advice, and I say it with love:

Stop saying "the island" because most people in NYC think of Long Island (suburbia). You are liable to have all kinds of hilarity ensue if you say "island" and mean Manhattan but your cabbie or concierge is thinking "Long Island."

If the New Yorker doesn't work out, consider my fave place to stay, the Soho Grand

www.sohogrand.com

I've never been to its sister hotel, the Tribeca Grand. They're among the chi chi but worth-the-price-if-you-can-afford-the-price boutique hotels.

Live a little!

The SoHo Grand! Like in Made! You have to stay there Dean, so you can get a fish in a bowl and call the bell boy "captain" and trash your room and oh boy I love that movie.

Which movie? Huh? "Made"?

I like staying there because: it's quiet; I can laugh at thestupid rap stars in the lobby; I like the steam table that a nice Arab-American man runs across the street (healthy cheap eats!); I can stroll around SoHo and, if I feel like a walk, Washington Square Park; love love love the free Kheil's products in the bathroom; adore the Japanese asthetic of the hotel; I always get the cheaper rooms in the back and stare out the window at the rooftops below, it's a good way to zone out after all the good NYC overstimulation. It's all very understated and I dig the all-male staff and so do all the male clients, except for the aforementioned rappers.

I feel special, I do. Thanks. But Speedy, I have a confession: I am terribly unhip. All I know is Frank. I don't know from anything else, as we like to say back in Brooklyn. So thank you. I have inspired you to post a thread. I am happy to be your muse.

And Dean must be pissed that we're ruining his thread.

I'll deal with Dean, fear not. He don't know from intimidation. You want I should schlepp over to his office right now and give him what's coming to him? Oy, do I need this headache?

I am a bastion, a veritable FAUNT of hip. It's not easy, being the barren wasteland of Canadian Prairies, but I manage. As my muse, you now have reponsibilities. Though I fear if you became hip, would your muse powers lessen? Perhaps it's your detachment from cool society that makes you so special. I fear we may have to keep you innocent and ignorant.

Damn! I was gonna say this! Figured a local would mention it, though.

McSorley's is very great. Old dusty pics of JFK and other notables up behind the bar...ruts in the floor from 100+years of NYC drinkers.

They brew the beer in the basement and ship it all over the city.
For $2, you get two little half-pint glasses of brew. Drink the stout.
My drummer at the time and I got hammered on $20 .
Beautiful, awesome place. Go there. Ignore the other patrons and just drink. Drink like its your job.

Now, Speedy, put your thinking cap on for a sec. (Would that be thinking toque, in Canada?) You can easily gather from this thread that I know a little about New York City ... and no one who knows a little about NYC is innocent or ignorant. I guess I will have to be a naughty and knowledgeable muse. Har har har.

Dean, McSorley's gets the OK even from this jaded feminist (that'd be me).

Ah, well we are staying at the New Yorker, thanks for the heads-up on that. A pretty respectable price for a midtown hotel and it was about all there was left by the time I finally convinced the troops that we needed to stay in Manhattan. I leave Wednesday, woohoo!

I am counting the days for you, you lucky bastard!

I think you'll be glad you got a place so close to the Hammerstein, literally right above it. Good for stumbling about...

I doubt I will have time unless I take five in an internet cafe to warm up or something, but if there is anything exciting to pass on about the last show, I will relay it to Dave asap.

BTW, does anyone know if I can bring my camera into Hammerstein?

I agree with Tre. From what I heard from all the fans taking pics the worst case scenereo is that they will make you take your battery out... so just take it out and put it somewhere safe. It's not like they will search you until the battery comes up.

Have fun! And thanks for passing along any details to Dave. :)

Dean, would you feel comfortable telling us whether as big-cheese admin
of the official unofficial fan web site of Mr. Black you get to hang with
The Man Himself before and/or after the NY shows?

Just wondering...and doing my part to keep the thread bumped up so you can find it easily.

I can't say at the moment, unfortunately, but I'll likely be bringing my camera. :)

IF I were to, say, hypothetically speaking, meet the band after the show, however, it would probably have little to do with my affiliation here and much more to do with someone likewise connected to whom I owe a pint or two.

Geez, I wish I had planned ahead, so I could meet up with you some time in the city Dean. I live about twenty minutes out, in the wild suburbian wastelands of Northern New Jersey. 'Tis a shame I won't be joining you, or for that matter Broken Face, at any of the upcoming Hammersteins shows. Anyway, just wishing you a safe and happy trip to the big city. Best of luck.

I will never say the word procrastinate again, I'll never see myself in the mirror with my eyes closed.

Yeah, I really should've started a thread to meet some of you New York (and area) 'ers. My bad. Thanks for the good wishes, I don't think this'll be my last visit to New York, so perhaps another time. Or, you know, if you're ever in Saskatoon. :)

Sir Rock,

You ought to blow off school and go in to the city and hang with these guys and stand by Kim's feet and wave to her some more!!!!!!!!

Not to sound like a patronizing old fart, dear Sir Rock, but I have one and only one regret in my life:

I stayed in and studied for a final exam and didn't join my friends at a Clash concert and they ended up hanging out with the band afterwards and my friend, whose extra ticket I turned down so I could be studious, she had the distinct pleasure of having Joe Strummer light her cigarette.

Learn from my mistake, Sir Rock!

So people meet the man and are really cool and take great photos and are very chilled and make everyone jealous.

Whereas I, fell off my chair in a drunken pile of giggles as he walked past and got amused looks.

I have no style

it was taken at Fez (Under Time Cafe) in NYC May 27, 2003 when i was privy to witness the man give a solo acoustic show. my friend dave and i got tickets early and sat down to enjoy our drinks. at the show, he played 40 songs and i was 10 feet from him. reid paley opened. it was fantastic (how often {if ever} do you get to hear "humboldt county massacre" and "western star" acoustic?) after the show, i ran into zanni from the board and jeremy from the bennies (we had just met a few months earlier so i guess he remembered me) and i took a pic of FB and zanni so she offered to take one for me, and i did, and shook the man's hand. if i wasn't an asshole and stuck around apparently everyone partook in some karaoke at the club. damn me and my lack of going with the flow!
