How will Bush deal with the nearly 50/50 split of the country? So many voted against him, how can you lead a nation with so many against you and your views? |

The press here is acting like Bush has it in the bag, that he's giving Kerry the grace of a little more time to rifle through these piffling provisionals, someone tell me there is a little chance?
Just a little one?

actually the popular vote appears to be in his favour.
in 2000, he lost the popular vote (>50% did not vote for him), whereas this time it looks like >50% did.
so, your question is pretty invalid. |

Well, it looks like another four years of hell.. at least i am glad i went to bed at a decent hour instead of staying up all nite. The Daily show was way better than the networks.
Right am still holding out hope that Kerry has a small chance of pulling it out At least it is more liberal here in Minnesota than a lot of the contry. if things get bad... I am going back to were i was born... O'Canada... save a spot for me.

I wonder what the Travis Tritt forum looks like...
I couldn't sleep last night because I was feeling so at odds with my country and so angry that it's being run by a blind adherence to the Republican=Christian vote. The only difference I see between the two candidates religiously is abortion. I think a lot of Christians assume Kerry is for Gay Marriage, which he isn't (though I am).
I've begun to realize that being angry doesn't mean I hate America, it means I love it and hate that it's going to once again be represented by corporate greed, imperialism, and global irresponsibility. Anyone who can't see that Bush has corporate oil as a priority has blinders on.
Did anyone think Osama Bin Laden had fucked us THIS bad? Without 9/11, would it have even been close?
On the other hand, how lame are the Democrats that they couldn't come up with a candidate who could beat Bush?

we can try to put blame on osama or the democrats, believe me i thought about it.
but the blame lies squarely on the heads of all the nascar loving, jesus-freak hillbillies in this country. |

My mom emailed me this...interesting read. Gives me a slight ounce of hope for some of the future:
Charlie Reese writes for the Orlando Sentinel. He's a Conservative Republican who is anti-abortion, anti-tax-and-spend, loudly critical of legislation by the judiciary, doesn't think much of ulticulturalism or secularism, has suggested Clinton "turned the Oval Office into a whorehouse," thinks Ronald Reagan is the greatest thing to come down the pike since canned beer, and voted for Bush in the last election. So, take a look at his article which follows.
Carrol C. Marks 801 International Parkway Suite 5 Orlando FL 32746 carrolassisatant@yahoo.com
************
Vote For A Man, Not A Puppet Orlando Sentinel Charlie Reese
************
Americans should realize that if they vote for President Bush's re-election, they are really voting for the architects of war - Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz and the rest of that cabal of neoconservative ideologues and their corporate backers. I have sadly come to the conclusion that President Bush is merely a front man, an empty suit, who is manipulated by the people in his administration. Bush has the most dangerously simplistic view of the world of any president in my memory.
It's no wonder the president avoids press conferences like the plague. Take away his cue cards and he can barely talk. Americans should be embarrassed that an Arab King (Abdullah of Jordan) spoke more fluently and articulately in English than our own President at their joint press conference recently.
John Kerry is at least an educated man, well-read, who knows how to think and who knows that the world is a great deal more complex than Bush's comic-book world of American heroes and foreign evildoers. It's unfortunate that in our poorly educated country, Kerry's very intelligence and refusal to adopt simplistic slogans might doom his presidential election efforts.
But Thomas Jefferson said it well, as he did so often, when he observed that people who expect to be ignorant and free expect what never was and never will be.
People who think of themselves as conservatives will really display their stupidity, as I did in the last election, by voting for Bush. Bush is as far from being a conservative as you can get. Well, he fooled me once, but he won't fool me twice.
It is not at all conservative to balloon government spending, to vastly increase the power of government, to show contempt for the Constitution and the rule of law, or to tell people that foreign outsourcing of American jobs is good for them, that giant fiscal and trade deficits don't matter, and that people should not know what their government is doing. Bush is the most prone-to-classify, the most secretive president in the 20th century. His administration leans dangerously toward the authoritarian.
It's no wonder that the Justice Department has convicted a few Arab-Americans of supporting terrorism. What would you do if you found yourself arrested and a federal prosecutor whispers in your ear that either you can plea-bargain this or the President will designate you an enemy combatant and you'll be held incommunicado for the duration ?
This election really is important, not only for domestic reasons, but because Bush's foreign policy has been a dangerous disaster. He's almost restarted the Cold War with Russia and the nuclear arms race. America is not only hated in the Middle East, but it has few friends anywhere in the world thanks to the arrogance and ineptness of the Bush administration.
Don't forget, a scientific poll of Europeans found us, Israel, North Korea and Iran as the greatest threats to world peace.
I will swallow a lot of petty policy differences with Kerry to get a man in the White House with brains enough not to blow up the world and us with it.
Go to Kerry's Web site (http://johnkerry.com) and read some of the magazine profiles on him. You'll find that there is a great deal more to Kerry than the GOP attack dogs would have you believe.
Besides, it would be fun to have a president who plays hockey, windsurfs, ride motorcycles, plays the guitar, writes poetry and speaks French. And . . it would be good to have a man in the White House who has killed people face to face. Killing people has a sobering effect on a man and dispels all illusions about war.

I think there is some truth in blaming the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal for a lot of this mess. I'm not sure how else to account for the country's shift to a Republican majority (despite the hillbillies).
BTW - great signature Jim

yes if you're not depressed today you should be.
this is the beginning of the end.
edit:
are you retared A4C? bill clinton and lewinsky have absolutely nothing to do with this.
it has to do with there being a big boom in religion in this country.
it has to do with AM radio being dominated by demagoguery. the fucking stupid sheep of this counry take their opinions from these radio personalities.
it has to do with the democratic party being too much like the republicans instead of actually standing for something.
it has to do with people just being fucking uneducated idiots. |

well now that the republicans have control of the executive branch, the judicial branch, and the legislative branch, things should be well on their way!
is there any poll that correlates presidential vote with college education or lack there of?

i didn't go to college, there are lots of smart people that don't go to college.
that has nothing to do with it.
it has to do with the ability to think for yourself, which college education has nothing to do with. |

Polls before the election showed a big education gap with Kerry getting more votes from people with more education. I haven't seen anything about the actual vote and education. |

I looked at a bunch of stats on demographies in the exit polls. Interesting things I noted:
1) People with children/families - far more likely to vote Bush. 2) People with post-secondary education - far more likely to vote Kerry 3) 90-something percent of people who voted for Bush listed his relgious beliefs as the most important aspect of him. Even among his supporters, only 7% listed intelligence.
I wish I could say that America has really done it to itself and you deserve what comes to you, but the problem is that we all suffer for American idiocy. Canada all the more so as a neighbour to the north.
That said, Kerry wouldn't have been the ideal president for Canada, and perhaps would even have been worse in his protectionistic policies, but I'd sooner complain about the US' self-serving idea of free trade than of the US' self-destructing and arrogant foreign policy.
There's an old saying. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Luckily, you guys can't be fooled a third time... yet.

Clinton/Lewinsky doesn't have much to do with 2004, but I think it got the Republican ball rolling in 2000. I think people bought the "let's restore dignity to the White House" shtick. Without that scandal I think Gore would've won in a landslide and none of this would've happened and,in my opinion, 9/11 wouldn't have happened.

i think that's a lame excuse.
the real reason gore lost besides bush cheating in florida was that he let people think there wasn't much difference between him and bush.
the democrats started trying to be more like the republicans in 1996, and it's been downhill ever since then. |

God, we're such an embarassing country. Florida went because of the Cuban/hispanic vote. I watched them interviewing voters in the bible-belt as they came out yesterday. Their polls showed that people were more concerned with the candidates "moral values" than any other issue, including the war and the economy. I really can't fathom that, so I must be really fucking immoral. They also felt Kerry was too "educated" (!!!) and "European." People are voting for Bush because he's a good 'ol boy. A quote on one of those 24 hour news networks: "I bet when you shake the President's hand, he shakes it hard and looks you straight in the eye! Kerry has a mansion in New England, but Bush has a ranch in Texas!" So obviously most of our country wants to elect someone as dumb as they are.
Around here, intolerance will not be tolerated |

well thats what i was saying above, i mean obviously people can be perfectly intelligent and rational without going to college, but it seems that many who dont further their education are more likely to be ignorant and just vote how their church wants them to or how their parents want them to. Even that doesnt explain the amount of people that voted bush though, unless our country really is that blind. I guess it doesnt matter now, in like 20 years americas gonna be covered in water from the north pole anyway...

Man I loved reading this topic. I'll probably read the whole thing a few more times today just to make me smile. When are you crybabies going to realize that YOU ARE THE OUTSIDERS, YOU ARE THE MINORITY. You act like there are just a few toothless people in texas that control the election, but the fact is the map is almost completely RED! You control most of the major population centers on the coasts and midwest and that is basically it. Just because you are a majority on this forum you think that your misguided views are mainstream...they're not.
This was not a landslide, but it was not a close election either. The American people have spoken and you better get used to it because the Democractic party is self-destructing. Repubs retain the white house, and pick up seats in the house and the senate. With more conservative (read: in line with the majority of americans) supreme court judges on the way. This is a great day for the United States! |
