i knew it by the popularity of oprah, touched by an angel, and travis tritt that most people in this country are fucking idiots.
now we've just taken a survey to confirm it. |

It seems the "mainstream" is generally where all the good stuff (ie. ideas, thoughts, arts, etc) are, no? That's why we're all on a Frank Black forum. Cause he's Mr. Mainstream. |

I guess if anything, I can say that today, I no longer fear death; I welcome it. I will watch with a grin on my face after the next terrorist attack, having pleasure in knowing I was right. I no longer have compassion for those who voted for Bush. They are guilty of supporting a treasonous regime.
I guess I just wasn't made for these times. |

It's bad yes, I's fucked yes, Bush is a fucking tit yes yes yes. but do you think the terrorism would have stopped if Kerry was elected, fucking NO.
It would take a major reform and a major shift of world opinions, stop with this crazy talk. It's not constructive to anyone and will be upsetting more than a few people who understand perfectly well what a bad situation this is with out the bullshit freakyness of scare mongering

quote: I'll probably read the whole thing a few more times today just to make me smile. When are you crybabies going to realize that YOU ARE THE OUTSIDERS, YOU ARE THE MINORITY. You act like there are just a few toothless people in texas that control the election, but the fact is the map is almost completely RED! You control most of the major population centers on the coasts and midwest and that is basically it. Just because you are a majority on this forum you think that your misguided views are mainstream...they're not.
This was not a landslide, but it was not a close election either. The American people have spoken and you better get used to it
You know what. You make a good point. And you make it much easier to make my point...you are the best example of American arrogance. You feel that America is the world...and that is where you're wrong. Because you see, while stupidity and ignorance may be the majority in AMERICA, and we're the minority in AMERICA, the majority of the world shares anti-American sentiments. And after today, that sentiment now includes a huge portion of Americans. Who's in the minority now?

HELL no. I hated both their stances on terrorism. Kerry saying they will "hunt down and kill terrorists before they kill us." Isn't that the motto of some insecticide company? No matter who is president, we're already more fucked than we ever were, thanks to what Bush has done to destroy our reputation in the world and make us an even bigger target. We need someone who can say "Alright, maybe we were a little wrong," but that person would never be elected. No matter which way you slice it, we're fucked in regards to terrorism. As far as everything else goes, it's a matter of who can do a better job, and nobody can do worse than Bush.
I guess I just wasn't made for these times. |

ill easily admit that i gave bush the benefit of the doubt when invading iraq, i assumed that he must know something we dont or else he wouldnt be so foolish to invade iraq, i trusted that america knew what was going on. well plenty of time has gone by for me and the rest of the country to realize how wrong we were. it feels pretty bad apologizing for believing in americas integrity so strongly...

How will Bush deal with the nearly 50/50 split of the country? So many voted against him, how can you lead a nation with so many against you and your views?
actually the popular vote appears to be in his favour.
in 2000, he lost the popular vote (>50% did not vote for him), whereas this time it looks like >50% did.
so, your question is pretty invalid.
Sorry to back track guys, but Ebb or whoever, how is the popular vote tallied? Did you have regional polls or phone votes or what? Excuse my ignorance. I realised earlier today that just because the college electoral votes are close, doesn't mean the number of individual votes is too. Democracy my ass. |

What harringk and alot of others arent understanding is that its not "liberals vs. conservatives." It's really "Bush vs. whoever else." Issues, not political parties. I, like many other people in this country, don't consider myself particularly conservative or liberal. In fact, if it had been McCain running against Kerry, I probably would have voted for McCain. I don't hate Bush because he's a republican, I hate Bush because he's Bush. You can't make blanket statements about democrats losing the election, because I know plenty of republicans that woke up sad and frightened this morning.

Can I put my two cents?
I see a positive fact in your last elections. I'm glad that there was a big participation. Even though your electoral system is quite weird, it's legal and you must accept it. That's what those thing called democracy is about.
After that lame kind of republican comment, I must punish some of you because you haven't thought in how much you're fucking up the whole world with that choice. As Jim have said, I'll be thinking in all those who voted for Bush when I'll be dying after the next terrorist act.

the popular vote is literally the total of all the individual votes.
the electorate (in theory) votes based on the popular vote for their state (or region.) |

Except for the Kyoto Protocol. Actually may be the best hope for us Progressives in the US is the European Union. I can see our Republican members jumping all over this, but the EU is starting to economically outweigh the US. US companies have to respect the rulings of the EU because of the huge market it represents. And, the influence of EU in international organizations is going to expand as the EU expands and as the aid the EU spreads around the world expands. And maybe in 10 or 20 years the EU will drag the US into the 21st Century. |

i sure hope that times proves you right but i wouldn't be too optimistic about europe's political and economic power in the near future. tho' we are in a good overall the new members will take time to adopt the EU economic and ambientalistic standards. there is already an issue about nuclear reactors (the chernobyl model) that slovenia first agreed to dismantle and now tries to keep. plus there is no common EU foreign policy. which often leads to misunderstandings (see spain italy and UK against france and germany on the war in iraq).

It must be just adorable existing entirely in your own little bubble, you evidently have no idea. Not a clue We do not emulate you here, not at all. Adopt your culture? what part of it, the big greedy corporatate fucking fast food style fascist fuckers that have forced themselves into every town and city promoting low quality but rapid outcome? Your celebrities? a bunch of plastic barbie dolls of low brain and little morals? Your movies again, for the MTV generation low on content but pretty to look at rapid flashy images with little message adding to the zombification and thoughtlesness that you seem to embrace, your holidays? like what, name me one that you invented? Music I will give you, you have some good music but so do other countrys, just because you embrace your corner of the world and ignore the rest of it does not mean you invented it.
Some people make me sick, so full of their own self importance when all they have to promote is cheap shit that looks good but is of little substance, keep it, I for one want no part. You are not original, you are not important, the world is a big place, get over yourself boy.

There really isnt anything here I would disagree with. The issues Europe has with challenges to its historical cultures are coming from within via immigration.
Most of the 'culture' that gets exported from the US is the part of our culture that the majority are the least proud of. I just dont think that "Dude, where's my car?" has changed the culture anywhere. The US is regarded via polling etc. as the most religious industrialized nation in the world. Trending more religious in recent decades. That is the opposite trend from Europe. No adoption by Europe of this US canon of society.
I really think that the economic models used in most of old europe (that is not a negative label IMO) are in trouble. The challenge of maintaining national identity when you have an immigrant class that seems disinterested in assimilating is another challenge. The immigrant class in Europe could care less if they are French or British or Spanish or whatever, because they are muslim. Add in the fact that those populations are the fastest growing ones in Europe and things could get complicated to say the least in Europe.

No Tre not at all. Am I misreading things? Are the muslim immigrants adopting Euro culture and developing nationalism? From what I have been reading that is not the case in France, Spain and UK. Correct me if I am wrong. I would love to hear some opinions on this from people who live there and see it every day. |

It is whore, but, my read has been that the cultural issues are more pronounced in the European countries because of a smaller population base. Like I said, tell me if its not a real issue to real Euro's.
The headscarf ban for example seems like the opening shot in what will be a long drawn out cultural war in France. France is desperately trying to hang onto a secular tradition by any means necessary. Regardless of whether you support that ban or not, surely we can all agree that having to legislate what pre-teen girls can wear to school is a troubling event. Whether it is a headscarf or a crucifix, no government WANTS to get into that level of minutae. It shows how worried the French are about their culture.
Another risk is that if the immigrant class does not develop nationalism for their new land, they will leave the moment they have consumed whatever it is they came there for and then leave. Or if there is a conflict with an affiliated group outside of their adopted countries that there loyalties cannot be counted on. |
