long time listener...
I continue to read-up on the news, but have discontinued making posts. The level of disrespect is unbelievable. Do you folks treat your friends the same way when they try to turn you on to something they like? you oughta be ashamed; the least you can do is listen to it, and then (with actual knowledge, or emotive response) dump on 'em. And to keep at it like this? ubearable.
Jontiven. Kudos to you man. I would have read the liner notes and all, but it probably would have been lost on me. To have not only the programmatic info but also the history of the sessions. That is a great way to contextualize the album and I think you for it. It will only make it sound better. If that is possible.

I'm glad work and family keeps me busy. One day I'll find the time to actually read what I'm not responding too. Maybe not.

I have refrained from commenting at all because, quite simply, I haven't heard the finished products yet. Esentially, people are listening to a "stolen" work in progress. I can understand wanting to hear it---I too have given into the temptation, admittedly. But I'm not going to comment on it, because it would be like writing a NYT Book Review on a novel I've only partially read. I have no idea how it's going to turn out, so I'm not in a position to critique. Same is true here. It's not finished, and we're not supposed to have heard it. Sure we're fans and we can theoretically say what we damn well please, but does that mean we should just because we can? Point is, I don't even think there's an ethical conundrum to be debating here. At least wait until we buy the finished product as it was meant to be heard before debating its commercial viability, or lack thereof. Dig?
So long, Jon. Your information was much enjoyed and whetted all our appetites for what's to come. I'm sure that's a unanimous sentiment. |

Why did Jon change all his posts to "bye"? He probably realized Charles browses the forum and was embarrased about how the conversation ended up... |

Doesn't everyone already know that?
Floops quesedillas zijn te vergelijken met het likken van fatsige Albert's aars nadat hij een fles laxeermiddel heeft leeggedronken.
But seriously, whatever your stance is, or whatever your position is in this entire ordeal as I so succintly put it, will go down in the FB dot Net History Books as being one of the worst scenarios the founding fathers could have anticipated.
There are several "events" that have occured that "everyone" remembers, (and you know I don't remember much), both good and bad, and this is definitely one of them,(and yeah, I spelled that word correctly).
I appreciate all people with inside information on the music, and I like the members of this site who make me laugh and inform me and make me cheerful, and I like how the site provides great things for fans like me.
Some people who post on this site piss me the **** off, and I think they are total dorks. I don't name names.
Oh well, whatever ends... what? |

This is all a little silly.... I cannot see that anyone has really been rude in this discussion (I actually agree with a lot of what Broken Face said, he had a right to say what he said, after all this is a discussion forum). Although I think it is slightly pathetic and childish that Jontiven has replaced his posts with 'bye', and that he comes back says a little more and then says 'bye' again. To me it seems very infantile, if you are going to say 'bye' then why come back? Sorry, I really don't want to rile people here, Jontivens info was good and it was nice of him to pass on the info, but in no means does anyone owe him anything for it. I dunno, I just think he has the wrong attitude towards us, and speaks to us as though we are kids.
There was a topic about honeycomb, where Frank (very kindly) recently joined in and helped a few guys figure out how to play a song from the new album.... surely if Frank was that bothered he wouldn't have joined in the discussion and helped out.
Sorry if I anger anyone with my post, I have refrained from posting in this topic until I saw all of Jontivens posts saying 'bye'.... thats kind of silly imo.... likewise with that Assholes topic, why do people feel the need to do that shit?

Someday I'm gonna go through the board and change all of my posts to "hello!".
Personally I was more amused by Mr. T's method of promoting the Ellis Hooks CD than offended. More people should try to be quietly amused than vocally offended at small issues such as these. It's good for your heart and it's good for your stomach.
It's a shame things had to end like they did, but on the internet every forum that gets at least 20 posts a day must have a monthly thread that turns into a nasty argument resulting in at least poster leaving the board (or going on hiatus). It's the law. And I wouldn't want anyone here to get fined or go to jail so I say "so be it!". |

Nothing to say except I loved Jon's posts about the sessions, I liked he wanted us to listen to Hooks, disliked a little his susceptibility, and hated how some people took that whole story such seriously.

I liked the posts, loved them in fact. They really had me looking forward to "Honeycomb". I just don't like how Mr. Tiven treated the fans like children -- and yes, people took him seriously. They went out and bought the Hooks record and reported back faithfully didn't they? If you didn't mean it, Mr. Tiven, you might try a <j/k> next to one of your jokes the next time. Shouldn't assume people "get" your tone of voice over the Internet.
I had never heard of Mr. Tiven before, so I looked him up on AllMusic dot com -- he's been in the business since the 1960s and has a resume worthy of respect, but it's clear to me from his postings he doesn't necessarily give that respect to others -- especially when he "took his ball and went home" by deleting postings that people "paid" for by purchasing Ellis Hooks. It's too bad.
Just for kicks, I did look at Mr. Tiven's prior musical projects and two stood out. For one, he has two albums out under the name "Jon Tiven's Ego Trip". For another, he was in a group with the great Alex Chilton called Prix. Kind of says it all right there.
By the way, for those who were wondering, the "X" is silent.
There's a Modest Mouse song called "Bukowski" that basically sums up my feelings on Tiven's posts. "Yeah, I know he's a pretty good read / But God who'd wanna be? / God who'd wanna be such an <expletive deleted>." There's a later bit about God that asks, "Who would want to be such a control freak?" that seems to fit as well.
Anyway, I'm buying Honeycomb the second it comes out, and not downloading it a second before. I'm looking forward.

How about : "Scotty Moore has left the building", or even "D.J. Fontana has thrown all of his toys out of the pram"
Loved this thread! Was very entertaining!
I'll be waiting for the official release too. |

damn! A few days ago I said maybe we could archive mr.Tiven's post.... With 'we' I meant the moderators haha now it's too late
well mr.Tiven, I appreciated your time on this forum afterwards it got kinda messy and I have to say although I think BrokenFace's post was too negative he didn't say anything about honeycomb or Frank for that matter
I dunno, this is how life works, it's so stupid and useless People feel offended, but I did not see any insults but still...

For what it's worth, knowledge of the Ellis Hooks CD is now fixed in my mind and I'll probably end up buying it soon. I didn't order from Amazon because I'm a caveman and I try to look for things in stores first (unless I'm sure won't be there). The next time I'm spending lunch browsing Border's I'll probably look around for it. |

What Mr Tiven is doing here is from my point of view not in the spirit of this forum (or internet forums) where all is usually about sharing information, for free, among fans. I think Mr Tiven acts like a child, and i don't like it. This story about the record company manager reading our "bad comments" and then not signing Frank because of those comments is a joke. How can you ask people to make only good comments ? if there is something they don't like, they can write about it. That's what a forum is for, Mr Tiven. I believe you misunderstood the concept of those internet forums. I can't hardly believe you took everything so seriously.
I haven't downloaded honeycomb, I'll wait for the release. But I am a bit less exited about Honeycomb now. The way you behaved here Mr Tiven has something to do with it ...

that story is simply ridiculous. many people, me included, overeacted to an attitude that felt as offensive for the simple reason that insider news are not items for sale and most of all fans cannot be treated like children or pushed around under the menace to stop providing exciting trivia. maybe i took it all wrong, and if that's the case i apologise. that said i have no hard feelings. i bought "blue guru" some years ago when i read that FB was in one of the tracks. i still think that it's a good record. it should be all about music after all.

i was hoping everything was going to be fine after the "group hug" but apparantly someone tried to grope someones ass during the group hug. or something.

Frankly - Jon Tiven seems a bit of a dick. (I know nothing of the guy's work but even if that is good he can still be a dick.)
Going and telling people he'll give them info on Frank Black stuff if they go buy some guy's LP is pretty sad. And some forum people are always intense enough about the band to do so. To get pissed off at people taking issue is also rather anal.
Would love to see what broken face's comments were before they were deleted (why edit them out pray tell?)
As for the discussion about locking the thread and whether people should have been nice to Jon Tiven - this is the internet, and even if it wasn't European Human Rights Article 10 or the US Ammendment that deals with freedom of speech or any of the many national or international thoughts and laws on this subject should count for something.
If Jon Tiven wants to post on a public forum then so be it, but he can't expect anything of anyone. Who cares anyhow? The LP will be along soon enough.
