for the record, i was never angry about this situation. the reason i deleted my posts was just to keep everyone from going apeshit and blasting each other on either side. i should have kept my mouth shut in the first place, and i have been trying to avoid posting because i really dislike the fact that i caused over 1000 people who check this thread inside info because i expressed an (really unimportant) opinion. i feel guilty that my big mouth indirectly lead to all the interested parties losing out on some prime info. i really hope that mr. tiven has forgiven all the nasty comments that people made and i hope that he was not offended by any of the language i used (i try and keep it clean and respectful {at least when not in general chat!}). on my end, like i said, i'm just pissed that anything i said could have dampened someone's day so much. sorry again all.

Noon -- I check the forum at work to see Jontiven has posted a fairly congenial reasonable reply to my earlier post criticizing him. He even clarifies what AllMusic said about his band, Prix. He didn't have to do that. "He finally gets it," I think. "He read me and seems to understand my point, whereas he didn't before." I feel bad about what I said, specially the bit about his band, Ego Trip.
5 p.m. -- I come home to see more posts ripping into Jontiven ... and to see that his congenial reply to me from earlier in the day is no longer there. Based on the other stuff I see ... I guess I don't blame him. I also see Broken Face's post feeling sorry for "causing" this whole thing.
First of all, I still continue to believe this was not Broken Face's fault whatsoever and he has nothing to feel bad about. Brian, you control what you write. You don't control how people react to it. What you wrote was reasonable and appropriate. The reaction that someone else had was out of your hands, and was not reasonable. Don't feel guilty.
Second of all I can see where Jontiven would feel shellshocked at the response he received which was to some degree deserved (though parts of that response including parts of mine were out of line). A rebuke was OK, but at some point enough's too much.
I just think everyone should think more about how they treat others. That goes for Jontiven, me and everyone else. So, I'm sorry if I egged anyone on. I shouldn't have. At the same time, Jon shouldn't have said some of the things he did. We all could have done better and in the future I'm sure we will, so let's drop it and forget about it.

Instead of a big ole pile of group sex, maybe we should have a group sing along of "Where is my mind" or since this is the FB general chat "This is where I belong".

You should have locked the thread at the puppies. The descent into group sex was gratuitous. This record(s) better be good after this much group therapy. |

were frank's catholics albums produced in the same way jon tiven is talking about? does anyone get the feeling that the little production touches, that will make the album a finished product, only be noticable to a few? |

The Catholics albums were recorded live to two track (as you probably know). This means there's no overdubbing, no edits, nothing. The mix is done live and while it is mastered (more reverb here, pull up the low end there, eliminate noise here, mellow the high end there), it would be nothing like the process Jon is going through.

yeah... and i think his records sounded great like that. i'm not even saying i liked the roughness of it all - to me it sounded just as well produced as any other record. i know that's probably because i haven't got an ear for these type of things. and that's why i don't really think the fact that these leaks aren't finished yet, in terms of production, is an important factor for me to consider when judging them. but you know, when i finally get to hear it finished i'll see if i like it any better. i like it a lot already, i'm just saying. |

Are you kidding me? Of course I'll go buy the Ellis Hooks album UNCOMPLICATED. I'm one of the rare non-musicians that live in Nashville and I'll be glad to go to one of your favorite record stores here if you have one, or if not, I'll get it at Tower or Borders Books on West End.
You have been, and continue to be, so very generous with all of your updates. We really appreciate it.
What a great experience you're having working with The Man. It is realy fascinating to follow.
Please let us know when The Man is back in town. Wouldn't it be special if he showcased some of the Honeycomb material at the Station Inn, 3rd and Lindsey, or the Bluebird? It would really make a great Christmas present or one helluva way to start out the new year.
Thanks again, and I'll let you know which songs on UNCOMLICATED are my favorite soon.

Amazing.
I refrained from commenting until now, but the degeneration from the vitriol seems to have at least begun. I agree with the comment that the thread should have been locked after the puppies, except that JT posted afterwards with what REALLY should have ended the thread.
In this day and age of emails and chatrooms, the nuances and eloquencies and thus context of the "written word" are often the first casualty of our insatiable desire to communicate ideas and opinions quickly, facilitated by this thing the Internet (Thanks Al Gore!). One must be careful, and I don't mean just here, when "communicating" that you are well understood, and conversely, that you are aware of this when you 'read into' other's posts or messages. Then there's the whole, "think of what you are saying, and what you're trying to accomplish by saying it" thing that people don't seem to do frequently enough.... or perhaps my views on things are just skewed in terms of what is productive, or what purposes our communicating should serve.
I guess what I'm saying is, it seems many people these days tend to take things too personally, in my opinion... and quickly posted electronic messages, in a world where ideas and opinions are exchanged so often, freely and immediately, seem to perpetuate that well.

Honestly, Wade, I post from work so do you really think that when I post here I want to make sure everyone understands me correctly? I post for fun.
And I think that if everyone constantly re-read their posts before submitting them, this forum would be very boring. Like your post, for that matter.

Mostly this and many other messageboards a pretty mean-spirited. Most people who are talking on message boards "talk" very differently than they do when they are talking to somebody face to face. I read tons of messageboard posts, all over, so I'm used to it, but Tiven must be new to this nerdy underbelly of the "internets". I feel that the ones who are turned off by negative experiences early on are the lucky ones.

Apparently some people can't let things go. For those of you that fall into this category, consider yourself warned that continuing to promote negativity and stir the pot after things have settled will result in a week's lockout.
The fact that this is the internet is no excuse for being an asshole, nor is 'doing it for fun'. I refuse to accept that our standards of civility should not apply because of the medium we use to communicate. If you don't behave like a good member of society on this forum, you will be removed.
Cheers, Dean
