The song was "Cold Heart of Stone".
Frank on acoustic guitar. Dave Phillips on pedal steel. No other Catholics on stage.
It was just lovely. If you missed it, try to keep in an eye open for the repeat in a month or so. |

Yeah I'd like to hear it, I missed it because I had to take the ACTs in the morning and I went to bed early, recording it completely slipped my mind. |

Didn’t anyone find the whole situation just a bit bizarre. Cilbourne and Goldblum doing their renditions of elevator music while sitting in the wings one of our greatest songwriters. They didn’t have a clue. Cilbourne didn’t even want to hold up 2 cd's. I expected them to roll out a piano so goldblum could play. Willing to bet a few dollars that Cilbourne has never heard a pixies song let alone any FB.
Well it was a national venue and a chance to reach a wider audience and I know this is a bit picky but the show could have done some homework - something besides 'frontman for the pixies'.
The qualities of FB that make him indispensable to us make him unintelligible to the the rest of the country. I wish he could write a song that would sell millions. Dont think it will happen. While "Cold Heart of Stone" is a perfectly lovely song and a sufficiently toned down FB tune to appeal to a wider audience, who but the converted were listening. I suspect the regular Cilbourne viewers had already switched to there local soft porn channel.

First off, I'm not busting balls here...this is just some constructive criticism of FB's performance on Kilborn last night. I feel like you folks, as his biggest fans, even if you disagree, will at least understand, better than anyone else, why this thing means so much to me. And I would LOVE Charles' response and some further insight into my plight. Initially, I was disappointed the whole band didn't play, but I understand there may been monetary concerns or CBS may have mandated that. Besides that, you guys REALLY were happy with that song choice? I can't honestly believe that if you're a FB diehard you were pleased he played CHOS. Why play such a downer in front of a national TV audience? I, for one, like the fact that most of FB's fans are diehards...I don't see that he has many casual fans, and I like being in the minority that appreciates his genius. But it would have been damn nice and would help him sell a hell of a lot more albums if he would've gotten up on stage and turned the viewing audience on its collective ear by performing a song with some more appeal to it. I mean, come on...that song is OK, but far from one of his best on either of his new albums. His voice in CHOS is so whiny (did you hear the clip they played before the commercial showcasing that?...I can't imagine how many channels were collectively changed...), and there's no hook or any part you want to sing along to like on the rest of BLD. It's a PHENOMENAL ALBUM, as is DW, but that song is nothing more than album filler. How about VELVETY, SAN ANTONIO TX, WHISKEY IN YOUR SHOES, END OF MILES, CALIFORNIA BOUND, CHIP AWAY BOY, BLACK LETTER DAY, JANE THE QUEEN OF LOVE, OR WHISPERING WEEDS????? Those would've really shown how great the new albums are. Assuming FB's purpose was to sell his new albums, playing CHOS didn't turn anybody's attention to his brilliance as a songwriter and performer. It is reminiscent of his choice for TOTY singles and videos..."Headache" instead of TOTY's best like Superabound, Calistan, or Freedom Rock???? And back to CHOS, how about this line..."I pledged you my love, then gave you my CAAAAAAAAR, now you're driving with HIIIM, now I know where you ARRRRRE." That has to be the most obnoxious, worthless, and uninspiring line in any song he's ever written. It alone makes me skip that song every time it comes around on BLD. Like I said before, I'm not trying to start a war, and I'm not just being picky. I am a FRANK BLACK junkie (since '94 on tour with Rev. Horton Heat), and I have waited since he was on 120 Minutes (I think...whatever Matt Pinfield hosted)in 1996 to have my favorite artist showcase his musical magic on tv to the masses. Last night just leaves a sour taste in my mouth, and in a word it just leaves me DISAPPOINTED. In the long run, no matter what, I'll still have my Frank Black regardless of how many new fans who get hooked on him. Frank is such an awesome musician, and I sure wish other people could appreciate him. But making decisions like playing CHOS on Kilborn will never allow that to happen. -FranknWeezer |

Who cares about the song choice? Who cares about Craig Kilborn? Who cares whether he knows who Frank is or not? No one watches that show anyway.
I was happy to see Frank on television. He could've done any song. Some people seem to enjoy complaining just to complain. |

big galoof - I too would love to hear the mp3. Looks like there's barely enough room for the 4.6mb version in the Abstract Plain files section, but maybe you want to make arrangements for the larger file since you went to the effort. Thanks for the offer. - Mel |

that was a pretty cool performance. he probably played CHOS becuase its more suited to the 2 man setup im sure. i woudlnt stress too much about him winning new fans either, i mean at this point who cares who really likes him. hes not about to quit making records because of a lack of popularity. Besides its kinda neat being able to say you know something that most of the world doesnt

Did anyone else notice that Dave looked pretty nervous? His hands seemed to be shaking on the close-up. Frank was a natural up on the tv sound stage. Excellent song, and well worth coming home from the pub early.

I replayed it a few times today, (damn, I love my PVR) and my 3 year old boy picked up his guitar and ran to the tv set to strum along. My 2 year old picked up her lil' keyboard thinking Dave was playing that.
I like the song.

I think the idea of a huge fan base would send a shudder through FB, but does he want to sell records, you bet, millions of them. Is he capable of writing that popular song, dont think so. He comes close at times to sublime pop, but there is always something that keeps that audience at arms length, even in a pretty straight forward song like chos. Who really ends up with a heart of stone in the song. That wasn’t obvious in the tv performance or out of context from the album - it was a ‘soft’ take. wp |

Hes probably not too worried about winning fans this point in the game, although you would think he might go for a larger appeal on TV, who knows |

i've been thinking about the song choice too, and I agree the 2 man set up works very well with that song... a lot of the great songs on the album wouldn't sound so good solo or with a 2 man front. And i think CHOS is something average music fans could really identify with. And the line you were bitchin about with "car" and "are" i think of it like a metaphor... and trust me, it pertains to the shitty realtionship i just got out of...
Frank has ryhmed every fuckin ryhme there is, sometimes you just have to bring it back to the basics. I fuckin love it. I love derek's tab of the song too... it's a great song to play and sounds very good solo.. a song you dont really NEED a band... i see why they only did the 2 man set up.. $$$$ not enough to go through all the fkn trouble to set up all their shizzle...
might be different if it was leno or letterman...
the whole show I was fueming on how ridiculous and retarded it was, and how fkn stupid craig and his guests were and how the audience didnt give fk who frank was, and neither did craig... i mean the dude (craig) cant even advertise his own show? what a fkn loser...
but did you hear the applause at the end of the show???
people got into it, they related, they liked what they heard... i'm sure he'll sell an extra 1000 records just because of that performance and gain some new fans.. so, put that in your pipe and ...
BIG GALOOF I wouldn't mind getting a copy of that but I don't know what AIM is??? enlighten me please?
anyway...
it is great to have a good tape of the man... god I love frank...
loved the belt buckle... I got to get one of those...
the lifting of the leg thing was weirding me out...
and he looked kind of short sometimes....
all in all.. 10 out a 10

I can understand what people are saying about the choice of playing CHOS. Personally I like the song, in fact its one of the better on the album, but maybe it is not first time listen friendly. Maybe BLD, or End of Miles would have been a better choice if Frank's aim was to sell more albums. Saying that Frank doesn't seem to give a shite about selling millions of records, or joining the mainstream, which is why I respect and admire him so much. In fact, I'd be dissapointed if Frank turned around and started writing chart music, or trying to become more of a commercial artist. I like the way Frank is, he is pretty unique in what he does and in my opinion he should stay that way. He has a loyal base of die hard fans who will always buy and appreciate his music no matter what he puts out, so why should he care about appealing to the masses. Frank has proved that he can write, and continue to write groundbreaking music, what more has he got to prove?
In my opinion mainstream music is not worth listening to, it's shallow, boring and only done for the money. And besides, most of the mainstream artists are w*nkers, who don't even write their own music.

Let's turn our focus away from frank black for a second... jeff goldblum, kevin sorbo... those have got to be two of the most boring guests ever, and the interviews were really crappy too. they did not deserve to have frank black songs being played in the background as they came out on stage. the jeff goldblum interview was poor. they seemed too fidgety and not relaxed enough. it was pissing me off. especially waiting for frank. they should have axed kevin sorbo and let frank play two songs (yeah right). you can tell kilborn doesn't know frank black. when dave grohl was on kilborn, you can tell kilborn liked dave grohl. he was interviewed and played a song. i thought frank's performance was cool. but the other guests were extremely sappy. who wants to see kevin sorbo's fruity dog do a trick? also i guess it is pretty hard to remember which album cold heart of stone is on huh? that idiot.

oh, and i bet kilborn doesn't know or like tom waits either. because when he introduced frank black, he said something like "releasing two albums in one day is unheard of". kinda ironic because tom waits released two albums on one day this year, and frank covers a tom waits song on BLD. I use to think kilborn was kind of cool, but conan could kick his ass.
i'm just bitter. i don't even know if what i'm saying makes any sense! ha.

i was lucky enough to go to the taping at CBS.. but unlucky to have to sit through all the other bullshit. they actually taped Frank first (a stage manager introduced him to the studio audience) then taped the other stuff later. so Frank and Kilborne were never in the same room together..
anyway, i agree that Kilborne sucks etc.. i've never liked him..
and i agree with the sentiment that, i would have prefered to hear something else perhaps.. like, if it were up to me and Frank said "Floop, what do you want me to play?".. but all the same, i'm always stoaked to see him no matter what.
like the song.. like the stripped down format.. but at the same time it would have been great to hear the full band rock out that little studio..
anyway..

by the way, i actually thought the dog thing was the funniest part of the show.. it should be noted that as soon as they cut to commercial, the dog was doing the ear trick perfectly.. which was actually pretty funny, but wouldn't do it on camera..

well, I personally disagree with the idea that CHOS is a weaker song on BLD. for me, it's a great tune - the first time I heard it was at his gig in chicago and it was one of the greatest moments of the set, and i really think that the song has a really catchy chorus. very nice melody.
and Headache is one of his greatest songs ever! that's perfect songwriting, in my opinion! he was totally right on chossing it to release as a single for TOTY. Speedy Marie was quite of a hit single here in Brazil, on alternative radio. people really like Frank around here.
yep, frank. it's time for a south american tour.

I personally really like CHOS. The first time I heard the song was when Frank played Louisville Ky. back in late April. The song sounded totally amazing live. I remember I really couldn't make out the lyrics when they played the song live, all I could really make out was the "cold" "stone", and other assorted bits and pieces.....I thought that he was singing about a cold tombstone and that the song was actually about death or something. Live, the song seemed to have an even more melancholy feel than it does on BLD's.
Anyways, I thought that the Kilborn performance was a good one. Dave Phillips looked like an old man on TV, haha, whereas when I seen the Catholics live, he just looked like a yound kid with an extremely heavy oral fixation for cigarettes. Damn, how I LOVE that beautiful steel pedal sound. |

I tried dusting off the ole VCR to get a tape of it. Set my alarm (because I'm old-too yah know..) And some how I recorded those battling robots. I was so bummed. Anyway I don't recall much of the performance from my sleepy haze but I get the weirdest feeling or vibe when I see that guy...not weird bad but freaky. Frank once lived a few country blocks from where I grew up. Can't wait till Nov. 27th. yeeeaarrgghh! peace Thatch |
