Hi, it seems there are a couple movie buffs lurking in this forum, I was wondering if anyone wanted to list their fav directors along with their 3 favorite movies by each.

Okay, in no order:

David Lynch (Blue Velvet, Eraserhead, Mullholand Drive)
Martin Scorsese (After Hours, Goodfellas, Taxi Driver)
Joel and Ethan Coen (Barton Fink, Fargo, Big Lebowski)
Rainer Werner Fassbinder (In a Year of 13 Moons, Fox and his Friends, Satan's Brew)
Werner Herzog (Stroszek, Aguirre, Kaspar Hauser)
Wim Wenders (Wings of Desire, American Friend, Kings of the Road)
Stanley Kubrick (Clockwork Orange, Space Odyssey, Dr. Strangelove)
Igmar Bergman (Persona, Wild Strawberries, Shame)
Terry Gilliam (Brazil, Holy Grail, Life of Brian)
that's it for now, lots more though.

William Friedkin- The Exorcist, Rules of Engagement,
The French Connection.
Stanley Kubrick- Full Metal Jacket, The Shining, Eyes Wide Shut

I like how both show such attention to every detail and each have
their own distinct style.
The Exorcist is my favorite and I love every minute of it.
The first part of Full Metal Jacket is perfect.

Brian De Palma: Phantom Of The Paradise, Carlito's Way, Snake Eyes (just because I saw it again 2 days ago and remembered how cool it was)

and then:
Coppola (Apocalypse Now, the Godfather)
Clint Eastwood (Unforgiven, Absolute Powers)
John Woo (Face/Off, The Killer)
Michael Mann (Heat, The Insider)

me no understand. you mean because i had tarantino on my list?
Tarantino produced IRON MONKEY, didn't direct it. not sure if you knew. i don't even think he really "produced" much of it either.. he just helped it get a release in the states, and came in much later (it was made in 1993).

i've only seen a bit of it and wasn't crazy about it actually.

if that's not what you mean, then what do you mean? cuz i didn't have IRON MONKEY on my list damn it!

and yeah, Coppola too.. yeah yeah.. these lists are too hard.. otherwise we'll go on forever.

Hey Floop, I completely forgot about Jim Jarmusch, and I agree that Ghost Dog and Dead Man are even better than his first movies.

p.s. How did you ever manage to see Love is Colder Than Death by Fassbinder? I've looked everywhere for that movie.

itchload,
yeah, have you seen any of seijun suzuki's films? if you watch BRANDED TO KILL and TOKYO DRIFTER you'll have a new appreciation for GHOST DOG, which references both those films pretty heavily. crazy japanese stuff..

as for LOVE IS COLDER, i first saw that when i was living in Berkeley at a Fassbinder festival.. (they had EVERYTHING.. from his early early shorts).. but they have it on VHS at my video store too.. (i'm pretty lucky to have some good video stores around here).. you might be able to find it on ebay..

Nice, comprehensive list, floop! You reminded me of some stuff I've been meaning to check out and also of some things that I forgot I liked. Vernon Florida is so fucking funny! ("Gobble, gobble.") Watched Tampopo again recently. Hilarious, and it makes you hungry.

I'm interested to see what John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig) does next. I hope he turns out to be a consistently good director.

Anybody seen any pre-Heavenly creatures Jackson (BAD TASTE, DEAD ALIVE, MEET THE FEEBLES)? Sick, sick, sick. And very funny.

I'm adding Preston Sturges (SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS, THE LADY EVE, PALM BEACH STORY) and Billy Wilder--my fave is THE APARTMENT.

you had "tarrantino (all)" and thinking that he did have more of a part in it then you just said, i naturally included that under all. it just seemed like you went out of your way to put all for him which would include iron monkey which i rented once becuse it had his name on the box so i figured it might be cool and it was pretty lame. thats all, wasnt trying to attack your taste hehe

Hi Floop

No I haven't seen any Suzuki movies, but oddly enough, I had just added "Branded to Kill" on my list of must sees, and I nabbed it off of a list of Jim Jarmusch's favorite movies.

I'll keep hunting for Love is Colder Than Death, I didn't realize it was available on video..or was anyway.

itchload,

yeah, GHOST DOG references BRANDED TO KILL a bit.
probably the biggest presence in GHOST DOG, which i forgot, is Hermen Melville's LE SAMOURI. have you seen that? add that to your list of must sees if you haven't.. it's so great. (that's where Jarmusch got the idea for the hitman wearing white gloves, which are actually editing gloves.. it's kind of a nice metaphor for editing)..

mereubu - haven't seen any pre-HEAVENLY CREATURES stuff, but i want to. HC is so great though.. i hope he does another smaller budget, HC-esque thing sometime again (now that he can do whatever he wants) even though he probably won't.

as for solondz, i like bits and pieces of his stuff. and think WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE is his best film.. overall he's too cold for me, and i think a bit overrated. HAPPINESS had some brilliant stuff in it, but it felt aimless to me.
the first half of STORYTELLING is a perfect short film, in my opinion. the second half i had issues with.

i occasionally eat chateaubriand.

Mereubu, I've seen Peter Jackson's trilogy of bad taste (i.e. his first 3 movies), all highly amusing. They kind of pick up the torch where John Waters left off...except tone down the gross out nudity and tone up the gross out gore. Needless to say, I don't think they have much repeat value, they mostly work as a movie night with rowdy friends. My favorite of the 3 is Meet the Feebles. I haven't seen Heavenly Creatures yet, but it's on HBO tonight at 230 in the morning, maybe i'll stay up and see it.

Floop, I'll check out El Samouri, another I recognize from Jarmusch's list.

I like the Stranger by Orson Welles and I like Werner Herzog's some stuff and I used to like Tim Burton until he sucks hard and used to like Night Shyamalan until Signs and the guy who directed the Others appears to know what he's doing. I like Rope by Hitchcock but wanna see his BEST movie? Family Plot! Ha Ha Ha Ha! But I love the performance in Strangers on a Train by the guy-next-door actor who died soon after the movie, what's his name?

So Floop doggie dog, can you please explain the deal with the epilogue stupid ass psychoanalysis thing tacked on to Psycho? Seriously--it seems impossible that Hitch could've been responsible for it.

I have always been amazed by 2001. My favorite Clint Eastwood directing movie is Perfect World. My favorite Clint Eastwood being in it movie is High Plains Drifter.

I saw Francis Ford Coppola at a SF Giants game. Plus he lets Tom Waits into his movies.

Did you guys not like Gilliam's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. HST alone inspired me to get into journalism. I didn't realize that Terry Gilliam directed 12 Monkeys. I saw Pump up the volume for the first time the other day, it was awesome. I wanted to make a list with all these directors and their movies, but I'm way too drunk right now, you know? I always thought Billy Corgan would make a cool vampire in a movie. Quentin Tarantino is probably my favorite director. His next film should be coming out soon. It is supposed to be called Kill Bill. Sounds pretty cool. I can't wait. I hope Steve Buscimi is in it. I feel kind of sick now, I had better go.

Leonard Cohen is cool.

- Jeunet et caro

way over estimated

hey frenchies -

i like Patrice Laconte.. HAIRDRESSER'S HUSBAND is an old fave. also his recent one, GIRL ON THE BRIDGE, had some cool stuff. it kind of came and went, unnoticed.

i agree on jeunet and caro.. i like DELICATESSEN and CITY OF LOST CHILDREN was visually impressive, but AMEILE bugged me. i thought it was so overrated..

i'm more familiar with the old school French New Wave guys (godard, truffaut etc..) any other recommendations on new stuff? i saw MERCI POR LE CHOCOLATE and hated it. that was such a waste of time.. were there any good French films this year?

john d. - yeah, i can't tell you why they did what they did at the end of PSYCHO.. but it is cheezy and oversimplified..

he didn't write any of his screenplays, but he did have a lot of conrol of his films so i'm sure he wanted it there. they probably felt they needed to put things in perspective for the audience.. at that time, it was a pretty radical film really. with the main character getting killed off in the first act.

they do the same thing at the end of ONE HOUR PHOTO, which kind of ruins what is otherwise one of the best films of last year in my opinion..

i occasionally eat chateaubriand.

Hey Floop, you seem pretty well versed in the New German Cinema

I'm about to watch Alice in the Cities by Wim Wenders
and Whity and Pioneers in Inglodstadt by Fassbinder..have you seen these?

p.s. I saw Heavenly Creatures last night and thought it was by far Peter Jackson's best movie, I also saw Ran by Kurosawa, I liked that too...though someone should have sent him a memo that red paint does not equal blood.

no itchload, for the new wave, i don't like it very much, even if those directors created a new kind of movies.

otherwise, i'm glad to see that my topic wake up your mind, and make write some of you about french director.

I'm not much into French movies for some reasons. Although I really loved this year's "Choses Secretes" by Jean-Claude Brisseau. There's no chance that it be released in the USA but it's a very intriguing and great movie.
Oh, and strangely nobody mentioned Jacques Tati...

I'm afraid most of the french films you can see abroad are crap
ie: Brotherhood of the wolfes
Amelie was ok but way overated, I agree.

nope!
I haven't seen a very good french film for years

"Saint cyr" and "Esther Kahn" were good.
they must be 2 years old and EK was shot in english.

You are funny. Now I know what you mean. Cool song, and I dig the band/guy who does it. Before I learned Spanish a little bit, I would always tell my Mexican friends, "estan pensando sobre viviendo con mi sister in New Jersy. Ella me dijo que es una vida buena alla . . ." Puzzled facial expressions.

So is there a Wim Wenders one about/called "Lisbon Story"? I saw that at a cinema and was really impressed. Maybe it wasn't him, but I know it was made in the last 20 years. I have "Buena Vista Social Club" on DVD. It's pretty ok, if you can ignore Ry Cooder the whole entire time.
