so many... Eddie Hazel, Robert Fripp, Carlos Alomar, Joey Santiago, Curtis Mayfield, Jimi Hendrix, Rich Gilbert and - of course - noel gallagher. ok - last ones a joke (seriously!) but what you think?

Bill Nelson, Roy Buchanan, Duane Allman, Leo Kottke, the Hellecasters, .... many more, including the usuals like Page & Hendrix, but I'm away from me discs right now and memory fails, per usual. Mike Oldfield is not normally thought of as a guitar god, but the guy can truly play, almost as a sideline within his own one man orchestra.

My personal favs are more along the lines of Neil Young, Doug Martsch(Built to Spill), Issac Brock (Modest Mouse), Stephen Malkmus..Frank of course.. I like what these guys do with their guitars, so they're the closest thing to 'gods' to me. Not so technical, but creative.

i always liked kim thayl from soundgarden. he was a cool mix of over the top soloing with cool and simple lead lines. i guess cornell canbe accredited for that too so i guess they are combined in a way. malkmus is quite awesome on guitar but ive been just getting into him lately so i wouldnt consider him a hero yet. i agree with dave though, they dont really need to be technical as much as creative. for that reason i guess ill throw jeff tweedy on there too.

Many of the above, also Chuck Prophet (arguably the best guitarist I have ever seen live?) and many of the Magic Band guitarists, who had to contend with Beefheart as well as weird song structures

Since I am above all a rhthym guitarist, Frank is pretty much my primary influence. I'm much more interested in chord progressions than guitar solos or melodies. Not to say that I don't like them, and some of my favorite lead guitarists are: Greg Lisher (of Camper Van Beethoven), Tom Verlaine (of Television), and Rich Gilbert.

Maybe Jimi Hendrix is too obvious, but for godsakes.

Personally, I like Dean Ween of the Ween band. d. Boon of the Minutemen. Mike Rudnicki of Baboon.

"Mr. Churchill Says" by the Kinks is not only my favorite song ever, but a particularly sweet piece of guitar work, really. Those no enlightened to the Kinks, throw on yer Kazaa and hear what Mr. Churchill has to say.

I'm down with Thurston and Lee too, they are amazing...the things they can do with guitars. Also, (gonna take a lot of shit for this), Kurt Cobain is the one who inspired me to pick up a guitar and rock out.

Kurt sucked, he should have stuck to drums.

(I'm kidding!!!! I'm in the same boat as you Jim, he inspired me to try writing my own music.. THAT may be something i'll take some shit for. ;)

Kurt was awesome, but I only saw him as an inspiration when I was younger and couldn't play that well (back in the Where You Been? days). As my playing progressed, I only paid attention to guitarist who wailed a lot. Because of that, I now suck at rhythm guitar.

I like Jimi for modern guitarist because he always sounds like two or three guitars at once. And he's also just sloppy enough, or free enough, to not get boring. Also, I tend to like guys who can drop a bona-fide solo and sing lead, like with Billy Corgan and J Mascis (well, they both played better than they sing). Whatever, on J picking up AFTER Where You Been. Are you freaking nuts? One of his beautifulest solos is on "Severed Lips," almost 20 years ago. Jeesh.

I tend to like rhythm guitar players the best, like:

Andy Partridge - XTC

David Byrne - Talking Heads

Jay Robbins - Jawbox / Burning Airlines

Zoot Horn Rollo - Captain Beefheart

Rivers Cuomo - Weezer

Doug Martsh - Built to Spill
