Speaking of Gangs of NY (which I've heard a lot of mixed reviews of; I'd see it if someone paid me to go, though). ; - ) ... Still my favorite Scorcese flick: Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. Dig those Ellen Burstyn bossa nova scenes.

I would enjoy a two hour film of nothing but Scorcese's eyebrows.
I'm sure he'd still find a way to make it Rated R

i think GOODFELLAS is like, an almost perfect film. it's such great storytelling.. i could put it on right now and get sucked into it and have to watch the whole thing..

Oh my god you guys, AFTER HOURS, the most underrated film of all time, I'll bet half you Scorsese Fans haven't even seen it. A brilliant brutal black comedy that has awful 80's cassette packaging. Another underrated Scorsese--King of Comedy. Too bad both these movies flew under the radar, because Scorsese did black comedy better than anyone else. |

it's a good film, and underrated i agree.. but would you really say it's better than GOODFELLAS or TAXI DRIVER?
AFTER HOURS is funny, but there are too many other great people to say that Scorsese does black comedy "better than anyone else".. :
black comedy gurus:
Stanley Kubrick (DR. STRANGELOVE, say no more).. Luis Bunuel (his early Mexican stuff is even funnier and more crazy than his later French stuff.. everything he's done is great).. Woody Allen (CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS is some dark ass shit. funny as hell. or have you seen ZELIG?).. Hal Hartley (one of my favorite contemporary directors.. TRUST is a perfect dark comedy).. Coen Brothers (just about everything).. Todd Solondz (wasn't crazy about HAPPINESS but there was some pretty funny stuff there. i loved the first half of STORYTELLING and still think WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE is his best film).. Tom DiCillo (LIVING IN OBLIVION), Hal Ashby (HAROLD AND MAUDE, BEING THERE).. Russ Meyer (everything, especially BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS).. Robert Altman (THE PLAYER, SHORT CUTS, some early stuff).. Tarantino (say what you will, the guy still rules).. Alexander Payne (haven't seen ABOUT SHMIDT yet, but ELECTION was epic.. and CITIZEN RUTH was pretty stellar too).. Terry Gilliam (his Monte Python stuff transcends time).. John Waters (i'm not a fan, but he deserves mention).. David Lynch (while disturbing, his films are often hilarious as well).. Spike Jonze (ADAPTATION was the best film last year, BEING JOHN MALCOVICH is a one of a kind..).. Neil LaBute (the guy might be a big mysoginst, but YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS was some funny shit), Farrley Brothers (they're so bad, yet so good)
individual films:
HEATHERS (one of the best dark comedies of all time, too bad Michael Lehman has fallen apart since then.. AIRHEADS anyone??)
MAN BITES DOG (doesn't get much more dark than humor about killing the elderly)
DEATHRACE 2000 (Sylvester Stallone at his best)
DELICATESSEN (cannibalism humor is always good)
MISSION TO MARS (this wasn't intended to be a comedy but it's so horrible it's hilarious)
SO I MARRIED AN AXE MURDERER (this is a great early Mike Meyers role)

delicatessen is pretty cool, its got a creepy/funny vibe to it. apocolypse now is a sweet movie although its not at all made by scorcese, but neither was delicatessen so i guess ill just stop now.

Floop, I'm sorry but I think After Hours IS the best black comedy of all time. I absolutely love Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and Goodfellas, I watch them all a couple times a year, but After Hours has always been my favorite. It's just a personal favorite of mine though. Scorsese is not the best black comedy director, I agree with that, although there is some good black comedy in Taxi Driver (until it gets deadly serious) and Goodfellas, I agree with all your picks. But I do think he did black comedy in After Hours better than anyone else.
I agree on Kubrick, not only Dr. Strangelove, but Clockwork Orange, The Shining and the first half of Full Metal Jacket are brilliant examples.
Coen Brothers, for sure, especially Blood Simple and Barton Fink.
Crimes in Misdemeanors, the subplot with Woody Allen doing a documentary on a guy who lectures on how to love life but then commits suicide is brilliant. I'm not sure I agree on Zelig being black comedy though, more farcical stuff. Altman does it great, MASH you didn't mention, and Brewster McCloud. I don't connect to Hal Hartley really, but I thought Trust was pretty good. I agree on Bunuel, throughout his whole career even. Tarantino, Solondz, Lynch (Willem Dafoe tripping and falling into a shotgun blast that sends his head careening off a building wall?) yes yes. But with the exception of the Coens and Kubrick, I can't honestly say any of those guys have made a "black comedy" that compares to After Hours. Of the individual films you mentioned, I mean, Heathers and Death Race are funny, and Man Bites Dog was grisley black humor, but it was basically one joke for 90 minutes, I'm not sure i'd want to watch it again and again.
For me...After Hours is the reigning champion, with Dr. Strangelove, Barton Fink and Clockwork Orange rounding out the top 4.

I'm Gonna Get You Sucka! is an excellent black comedy. Oh, you meant black as in dark humour! My bad, dawg. |
