My friend and I are having an argument and the only way to resolve it is to put it to the good disciples of Charles Thompson.
Complete the following sentence:
If you think that,
a) you have another THINK coming; or b) you have another THING coming.
Please help us as our friendship has been put on hold until we sort out this mess.
Toeknee. |

I always thought it was "thing", but I have seen it written as "think", which I never thought made any sense

I know "think" is right - let's face it, whose grammatical knowledge would you trust, Judas Priest's or Mr. Scholar Brian's? |

well, sometimes what's correct (at least in the beginning) doesn't always become what's commonly used

It's thing!! Come on! Besides, it isn't always preceded with "If you think that." Often it's just, "You've got another thing coming."

I used to think "play it by ear" was "play it by year." I'm not alone in that either but now it makes a bit more sense to me.

some things you can't find in a reference book or website, Carolyn. Try stepping out your front door every once in a while. A bit of sun will do wonders to that programmer's tan you've got right now

It's "you have another thing coming".
'Think' makes no sense in that context. Y'all are crazy!
On this topic though - does anyone else think "Open seseme!" started out as "Open, says me!"? Doesn't that just make so much more sense?

I'm pretty sure it's "thing." I guess "think" sort of makes sense, but it's not usually a noun, so I'd go with "thing."

Yes, i'd agree with 'thing' as well, never heard it the other way, tho it's kinda clever.
As for 'play it by ear', that's what it is. It's a musicians' reference (guess there are none around..heh) - you can play an instrument or song by ear, buy just fiddling with it, and adapting to it quickly.
Just like you'd do in a situation that you'd 'play by ear'.

It's THINK! (This is one of those transatlantic deals - UK says think, USA says thing, let's call the whole thing off) |

how can it be "think"? it makes no sense.
if it was "think" wouldn't it be semantically incorrect (or whatever that word is) it should be "you have another thought coming" which means something totally different...

Lots of these vernacular phrases don't make much sense - "Have your cake and eat it" for example or "cheap at half the price"; doesn't mean they're not right. Perhaps this phrase has been adapted elsewhere in the world, but I can assure you in England everyone would say "Think". |

It's because it's really 'half your cake and eat it.'

have your cake and eat it too makes perfect sense to me. I think it must come from weddings. people like to save their cake, freeze it you know, but who doesn't also want to eat it?

by this point, "thing" seems to be the general consensus (the Brits' votes don't count, of course)
