OK, so as most of you know, e and El Barto have been..speaking a lot recently, and during these conversationso often are the words
' a what?' spoken.

With the huge amount of words which can mean completely different things in the US to what they do in the UK, i thought we'd investigate it further...

Some examples of ones I have come across so far;

'Skint' - Uk term, meaning Broke/Poor

'Biscuit' - UK term meaning cookie (i couldnt believe that one!)

lots more, but ill put them up sporadically...so any one else?

a British friend from college used to always say "let's go get some fags", which never got old.

Biscuit is a good one. I was very confused when I ended up with a cookie and not a hard little cracker.

Others I can think of - telly, lift, trousers, short name, peckish, gobsmacked, the whole 'take away' vs. 'eat in' phenom, and then all the great swears you guys have - like shag, bollocks, and tosser.

I could go on and on.

I think an appropriate gift for any UK friend visitng the 'States is the Fanny Pack. Always handy, indeed.

'Have a go', 'expiry date', and that 4 minutes and 34 seconds is written as (4.34) rather than (4:34) are all interesting.

oh, and the date thing, like today i would say it is the 27/01/04 but US would say 01/27/04 - which is just silly. haha.

If I were dictator I would make us change to writing the dates with the day first instead of the month, it's just more logical to me. I also think we should (finally) switch to the metric system.

not really since most people say January 27, 2004 instead of the 27th of January, 2004

wanker.... thats something we Brits use but Ive been informed that the Americans don't, I guess you guys like jerkoff more.

Tap (uk) / faucet (us) (what the fuck is this)
Bumper / Fender

cockney rhyming slang is always good to use in the presence of an american as they just don't have a scooby (scooby doo = clue) as to what you are talking about.

Who's the man that won't cop out when there's danger all about?

I think the UK way is much more logical, and we say 27th January 2004...so much more logical.

Other things - apparently US dont use the phrase 'Fuck All' as much as we do..and using the word Pissed for many different uses, IE - pissed - drunk or really angry/annoyed
Piss - to urinate or 'take the piss out of..' - make fun of..

Yeah - over here taking the piss out of someone usually involves vinyl tubing. We beat the piss out of people, though.

I think the UK date actually is more logical because you're going from a small measure of time to a larger one. Day - Month - Year. See?

In fact 'biscuit' is basically a French word whose etymology means 'twice-baked'. In France it refers to any kind of small, flat, dry cake.

Hey, when I was in the UK, it was "Mr. Brain's 5 Faggots." I guess they've upsized to keep up with the times.

I love all the extra syllables y'all use--like saying that you're "disorientated" instead of "disoriented." So cute.

I still remember a forum misunderstanding last year when Ten Percenter was drunk (pissed) but ramona thought he was angry at her (pissed). Brief wackiness ensued.

"Spotted dick" kills me.

We do use fewer syllables sometimes Mere - "lift" instead of "elevator" for example. I always thought "condominium" was a funny word - sounds like some kind of multi storey sex shop. On that same theme, when I was a kid, condoms were commonly referred to as "rubber johnnies".

I don't know if I ever heard anyone say bumbershoot in person, but definitely on tv, and in literary usage. Such a neat word.
Fil(i)m (and alumin(i)um) is meant to describe the extra "i" syllable that everyone around me added when I lived in and travelled through England. It was especially noticeable because I was in a cinematography class....I must have heard that word about 40 times a day.

apparently some North Americans don't spell it that way, CoF
(but they do tend to edit additional letters into their spelling)
