That name for an album conjures up many delicious possibilities.
I CAN NOT WAIT for that album. I want it NOW! |

as exciting as it is, I can't help but worry that it will be his last album. I mean is this with the catholics or is he wrapping up his career??? And April is awfully soon after SMYT. Nevertheless I am excited.

It may be cool for him to just stop for a while. Not cool in a good sense but in a disappear and reappear with something different. He has been whacking out albums like its going out of fashion and although they are good I hate to think how good they could be if they took a little more time over them. I'd be interested in hearing the biggest gap between his albums. Im guessing its between trompe and frank black. But what about his solo career?

According to Amazon:
TLM: October 1991 FB: March 1993 TOTY: May 1994 COR: January 1996 (I had to look elsewhere for this date, as Amazon insists it came out AFTER Pistolero. Maybe it was reissued in 1999?) FB&TC: September 1998 Pistolero: March 1999 DITS: January 2001 BLD and DW: August 2002 SMYT: September 2003
So it looks like the biggest gap was between COR and the first Catholics album.

I don't think it would be cool to see him disappear. If the pixies get back together, sure take a break if they're going to do a new one. If not, Frank could be cabale of a new album every year and that could be real cool. You are right though, Frank Black Francis? It makes you wonder. As long as he keeps doing something I am happy. |

I doubt he'd end it now. He has some serious momentum. Maybe he is just getting set to re-define things again |

Well, from interviews and such it doesnt seem likely that he'll be calling it a day. Always talk of where to set up the studio next and the question "where do you see yourself in ten years time?" the answer being "talking to you guys about my latest release". I mean, the enthusiasm is there, it's just difficult to read between the lines when theres no official word, so please...someone dont keep us in misery! |

Where ARE you guys getting this idea that he's quitting music? I've seen it in a few threads here and I think you're insane. Do you have it on good authority that Frank's been sending out resumes or something?
And why would the name Frank Black Francis "make you wonder"? From what I understand the release is a combination of Pixies-era stuff and new recordings. The name is a reference to that. Maybe it's even tongue-in-cheek. Where do you read "Oh, he's retiring" in there?
Crack is bad for you, you know.

In interviews he talks about keeping the music career going (taking lessons to protect his voice) so he doesn't have to work in the shipping department. I don't see any indication of a retirement. Why would he? Doesn't he enjoy it? |

The gap between Cult and the Catholics was due to problems getting a record deal. Then Pistolero came out only 6 months later. |

He loves playing music. He has said many times it is ALL he thinks he can do. I see no indication that he will ever quit being a musician. That is very random, IMHO.

I don't get the impression that he is changing his name to Frank Black Francis - I have the feeling it was just for this CD which may be part new and part old.

Yeah I'm guessing the only reason it says that is because it will include material from both Frank Black and Black Francis.
What are the people who think he is retiring basing their assumptions on?

Perhaps he was involved in the huge conspiracy of "FBF"...I've got a feeling that I have a hunch about what's going on. You know how some people who are paralyzed from the neck down have helper monkeys? They make them food, put CD's in to play, open doors, warm up the food etc....well soon all humans will rely on helper monkeys for everything..then the monkeys will enslave us all!!!
Except for the fans of "FBF". You see...Frank Black Francis (Also known as Charles) is actually an alien who can use his overdeveloped super-powerful mind to control the monkeys. I mean, think about it...how else could he continually write such great songs? He's an alien...DUH! The reason he's gone into hiding as of late is because of the rovers on Mars right now..He actually lives in the largest volcano ever found: Olympus Mons. This volcano, of course, resides on Mars...He's scared that he will be found and condemned to be studied for centuries by our dumb scientists. Little do they know that he can teleport himself to Earth whenever he wants via telekinetic powers. So...fear not fellow followers..for we shall be saved by our savior FBF.

The manta ray that his mom said was above the house in "month number three" was actually delivering FBF to Earth.

I imagine this double album as a set of two albums, one with the Pixies and one with the Catholics. It would be a completely ego-obsessed album, where he would talk about himself, the way he started the Pixies and then a solo career, and then the Pixies and the Catholics simultaneously...all that in a very cryptical way, of course, and it would take us years to understand what he is talking about.
Oh, and there would be so many new fans, they would all come on this forum, and Dave, Dean and Jim would become start-up Nouveaux Riches, they would play golf everyday with George Bush and his daughters.
He says "c'est la vie" and takes another dive. |

Over a month ago this "Frank Black Francis" double CD was posted about in the Pixies folder (http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4428).
I think that thread was started well before Spinart said anything about the Frank Black Francis release so I'm inclined to believe the poster who leaked the details in December. One CD of pre-Purple Tape Pixies demos, one CD of Frank Black and the 2 Pale Boys (Andy Diagram and Keith Moline) re-arrangements of Pixies songs. |

COR was repressed by Cooking Vinyl. I don't know if it's 1999, though. |

You're correct : Cult... was originally released in Jan '96 and when American Recordings left Warner Bros. and signed with Sony, it was re-released on the Sony Legacy label in '99; (hence Amazon's date of 1999). American has since gone to Island/Def Jam and they have not re-released Cult... so it looks like it'll soon be a collector's item. |

could this new album be electric and acoustic? one disc for each. maybe some of the same songs. then a few just acoustic or electric. maybe frank is making a concept album like the wall or tommy. about his life from going backwards from the days as Frank Black with the last song being about the beginning of Black Francis. |

It does seem strange that some people have come to the conclusion that Frank is going to call it a day.... and I'd agree with Jason that these are insane thoughts that are causing alot of negative waves. Remember in 1997, Frank said to David Bowie on his 50th birthday 'You'll have to play my 50th, man.'
It would be nice if Frank did a few different things, maybe another solo album, maybe another with the Catholics, and maybe a new Pixies album. I'm happy with whatever he does as it's generally very very good.
Who's the man that won't cop out when there's danger all about? |
