Today's random song of the day is Fazer Eyes.

What do you think of it?

lyrics
Staring on into night
Complete synapse
I switched on something I did not see

May I leave? I believe I might
This sweet collapse
Baby, I cannot get me free

When you''ve got your fazer eyes on me

Driving on into where?
I do not know
Shores that once were by the sea

I''m seeing something that is not there
It''s so fast it''s slow
And it''s playing with my memory

And you''ve got your fazer eyes on me

Accustomed to the frequency of glow, oh yeah
You won''t be frightened of the real thing after the show

I remember that this song was voted off the TOTY survivor quite rapidly. To me it's one of the many highlights of the album. Ole Mulholland/Fazer Eyes/I Could Stay Here Forever is definitely my favorite part of TOTY. I love the guitar solo at the end of the song, and I love the background vocals too.
What is it about by the way? I don't even know what "fazer" means.

A "fazer" is a kind of a laser used in Star Trek, a sort of a small pistol that can kill or just paralyze the victim.

My ex-girlfriend had this kind of eyes, it was impossible to say which color it was. And I always tend to relate songs to my personal experience. Therefore, this song has been my fave for long time. Even now, I really enjoy listening to it.

The part "May I leave? I believe I might / This sweet collapse / Baby, I cannot get me free / When you've got your fazer eyes on me" is very similar to "Diamond Sea", one of my favourite songs from Sonic Youth.

It is a very enigmatic song. "It's so fast it's slow" is a brilliant line. I never really understood the end : "You won't be frightened of the real thing after the show". Any suggestions ?

Perhaps it's FB talking to this girl from the crowd who gave him that seducing, penetrating look during a gig. "Frightened" could be replaced by "disappointed".

I always thought it was about Jean. And that she loved him OFF stage more than on, wasn't scared of the REAL him, etc. When I said that in the song meanings thread though, people thought I was wrong and said it was about aliens. Which seems too easy to me, but whatever...

Anyway, I think it's a lovely song and I like it!

I think of it as Places Named After Numbers II: Electric Boogaloo. This time it's his romantic escapade with a star going supernova that then turns into a black hole.

I like this song, especially Lyle's job. The final solo is great.

About its meaning... Many years ago in a local music store - I was there -, a journalist asked Frank about his "UFOs obsession". Frank answered that he was actually "more fascinated than obsessed", or something like that, and he pointed out that he hadn't written "more than 5 or 6 songs" about UFOs and ETs to date. Among them were Los Angeles, Parry the Wind and Fazer Eyes. I'm pretty sure of that cuz I still remember my surprise when he mentioned this song, which I had always thought was a love song.

It can be both a love song and a song about UFOs.

I remember Frank said "they're romantic"

I don't like how this song ends. Weak fade out, imo

Huh - I always thought this was about him playing a gig and the way girls can get enamored of a band member and lock eyes, but now I realize it is at least also about UFOs, and maybe also Ramona's meaning as well, I like that interpretation too. But now, looking at the lyrics again, it all snapped into place. I have seen what he is talking about - the seeing something that isn't there. Obviously, some of you may consider me a nutcase, if you don't already ;), but back in 1992 or so, in SW Kentucky while in college, I was walking with a few people from my studio on campus to another building, late at night, clear sky, lots of stars, and I was compelled to look up. The stars were bright, and something was wrong. There was a wavering over a large portion of the sky, as in, maybe 1/4 of the visible sky, in the shape of a triangle. You could see the stars, but they were as if refracted through a thick lens. We all saw it. Funny thing is, I don't think we ever talked about it again. I was completely sober.

One of my favorite songs on TOTY, Frank's vocal is beautiful. Keep in mind Frank has written a handful of love songs that also have some otherworldly context to them, Letter to Memphis, Velouria, Ana, ext.

I absolutely love this song. One of my favorites of TOTY, perhaps of all FB. Powerful and sad at the same time, this song really represents (for me) what FB's music is all about.

As someone already said, my only regret is the fade out in the end. Especially during that brilliant outro solo. "Ok, so... what happens next?".

Not a girl from Venus?

This is actually one of my least favorite TOTY tracks, but it's still good. I don't think there really are any bad songs on that album.

apl4eris, that's funny, I experienced the same thing. I laid in the grass in the backyard of my father, in Holland, two years ago or something and I saw something similar. Three lights in perfect triangle formation flew over me. Not 1/4th of the sky but smaller. First I figured it was an airforce squadron or something because I could see the stars in between. But the lights kept such a constant distance from eachother that they almost had to be physically connected in some way... or maybe they were just very good pilots?

also, isn't a 'fazer eye' a multi-facetted eye, like insects have?

the interpretations- love song, space song, they're all accurate. good art is open to interpretation. the weaving of a love song with outerspace references. what i think of is the desert- and how ufo sightings often occur here- because it's so wide open and full of big sky. and the southwest looks lunar and miles and miles of it are vacant. the line "shores that once were by the sea" really makes me think of eastern california and arizona- areas that used to be covered by ocean and have since eroded. but it's all so metaphorical. it's a love song. no, it's a space song. a candy. a gum.

I remember listening to this song over and over again when I got the album. In fact, I think it was the first Frank Black song that I really fell in love with. I started learning how to play guitar shortly before picking up this album and I spent countless hours learning the song, with Lyle's solo at the end. Sweet, sweet music.
