I really like Beck, actually; listen to "Bottle of Blues", "Cyanide Breath Mint", "Lazy Flies", "Feather in Your Cap", or "Rowboat", and it's amazing what songs have come out of this one man's mind.
Yeah, hav'nt heard Sea Change, but Mutations could be my fave Beck album. |

Oh, if you need proof that Syd Barrett is one of the greatest song writers, please refer to Effervesing Elephant. He wrote that poem when he was *15*.

How about "Octopus", "Terrapin", "Long Gone", "Baby Lemonade", "Waving my Arms in the Air", or "Wined and Dined"?

Oh, definitely. This one just struck me after listening to it again how brilliant it is...and the fact that he wrote it at the age of 15 makes it even more impressive.

I'm surprised that no-one has mentionned Robert Smith of The Cure. Personally I think that the consistent quality Smith churned out from 1976 - 1992 puts him up there as one of the best songwriters of all time. If you look at all the Cure albums, they are mostly very very good. Even the more recent albums WMS and Bloodflowers have moments of songwriting genius, despite the fact they are not as strong as the previous albums. But then again look at people like Bowie and Young, hugely influential songwriters who have written both masterpieces and complete piles of shite.
So my view is that the best song writers are:
Robert Smith David Bowie Neil Young Mark Knofler Jim Morrison Zach De La Rocha
Obviously I'd put Frank up there as well, but that goes without saying.

Cheeseman, you cannot deny that Knofler wrote some all time classics with The Straits.... and his headband possessed mystical powers which enabled him to pen such classics as Tunnel of Love / Telegraph Road / Brothers In Arms etc etc...

I'm not sure about BEST, but Andy Partridge of XTC might be my personal favorite.

Zach De La Rocha penned the lyrics to the Rage songs.... that would make him a songwriter, or are we talking from a musical sense? The first Rage album is a ground breaking album, and De La Rocha deserves a great deal of credit for this album alone. Maybe he hasn't done enough to warrant 'greatest songwriter' but he is a trully great lyricist and performer.

and don't forget "dominoes"
greatest songwriters, hmhmh...
imo:
frank - of course
bob dylan - he doesn't have the best music, and he doesn't have the best lyrics - but the mixture of both (and his voice) is unreached with him. recently i listened to his soundtrack of billy the kid, this record expresses best what i want to say.
syd barrett - somehow bigger than dylan or anybody else. but he went crazy too soon to reach a bigger audience.
suzanne vega - she is so incredibly clever and talented.
paul simon - possibly. just puts out magnificant songs, but i'm not enough of a musician to appreciate this

I'd hardly consider him one of the best songwriters around. I mean, come on, how many times can one person use the phrase "Pentagon, five-sided fistagon" in different songs. He spent all his ideas on the first album and spent the reast of their career rehashing, in my humble opinion
