Do you mean for Cheese, or for quality?? If we are talking cheese then you would have to say ABC, Men at Work, Howard Jones, Aha....

For quality you cannot go wrong with Pixies (obviously), The Cure, Dire Straits.....

Who's the man that won't cop out when there's danger all about?

Surely you've got the world on it's head, Stuart. A-ha were a brilliant band and still do decent stuff today. Dire Straits, on the other hand suck anus!

Karaoke - do you mean Southern Death Cult, the first incarnation - now THAT was a band!

My formative years were spent listening to 80's music. Just about my entire record collection is from the 80's. Essential stuff:

Stranglers (before they went all poppy in the late 80's)

Siouxsie and the Banshees

Echo & The Bunnymen

Sisters of Mercy (pre 1985 split)

Bauhaus

Cocteau Twins

The Chamleons

House of Love

That'll do for now.

Definitely Echo, also Smiths, how has nobody mentioned that?
The Du, Husker Du; Sonic Youth who have cleverly managed to stay essential; Mudhoney; Fugazi.
That is all. For now.

You forgot New Order.

The 80s were definitely British.

Blondie, The Go-Go's, Pretenders, The Smiths, Talking Heads. Those are my essentials. Also love Erasure and Roxy Music.

The Police. Sting's gay solo career or no gay solo career. The Police were great.

Initially, I had compiled a list of the bands I'm listening to right now. I'm a fan of a lot of the stuff that was coming out of Britain at the time. You guys have named a bunch Echo, siouxsie, etc. I was, and still am, a huge Elvis Costello fan.
Yes Andyn, Southern Death Cult and The Cult up to the LOVE album. In paticular the Death Cult is in heavy rotation over here.

i assume you guys are categorising 80s bands as bands that reached prominance in the 80s and not ones that started/existed solely in the 80s...

Duran were one of the reasons the 80's sucked for long periods, the work-shy fops.

Favorite bands during the 80's decade:

Iron Maiden (lost me after 7th son)
Rush (lost me after Signals)
Judas Priest (lost me at turbo lover)
Van Halen (not hagar)
Blue Öyster Cult (had hits in the 70's, but loved there 80's songs too and they still rock today 30 years +)
Michael Schenker Group (MS is a god)
Suicidal Tendancies (one of my favorite Concerts)
Metallica (yes 80's not 90's)
Scorpions (loved there 70's albums better)
Guns n Roses (Appetite For Destruction ruled)

PIXIES took it all to a new level and made the next decade sound better.

I've hated most of the bands some of you have listed. Duran, Cure, DM, Siouxsie, Smiths, etc. As of recently I have more of an appreciation to Joy Division over New Order.

The Flaming Lips' first album was, I believe, in 1985, and they are indeed one of the greatest music artists in the world. And let's not forget Todd Rundgren (although I really haven't heard of his work much from the '80s...probably worhty of being checked out though, as it is Todd Rundgren)
CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN is all right.

I suspect maybe back in the 80's Thomas, looked something like this:
First article of clothing was a white OZZY painters cap.
Maybe a corduroy vest with simulated sheeps fur lining.
Perhaps a hooded sweat shirt with the hood hanging out of the vest.
Some tight ass Levis with an Van Halen beltbuckle.
And last but most imprtantly maybe a dimebag and papers.
Thomas, did we hang around back in the 80's? I think we did because that's what all my buds were listening to and they [rightfully so] thought I was a complete freak with my Echo and The Bunnymen

Note to self - Flowers smell pretty!

no no no kok,
he had a black mesh tshirt, with a lumber jacket (probably with a great big iron on patch of Eddie on the back), ripped jeans and don't forget the Reebok high tops ;)
We can keep the painters cap tho.
