I have a strange impression in listening to COR and it is not exactly a good one. It seems to me that the record is too much melodious, too built up and with a guitar sound a bit main stream. It is strange because it seems he is not totally himself. It seems like this record is missing of the genious mood of the others, as he wanted (or maybe been forced) to capture the taste of a larger audience. Maybe I'm telling a sack of bullshit, but I'd like to know whether there is someone getting the same impression or I'm completely wrong.

cor is maybe the most difficult fb album (it's the least loved by most fans).i don't think that songs like kicked in the taco , dance war or jesus was right would ever gain commercial success, specially if you consider the rock music trends back in 96 (oasis, blur, green day ).you can like or hate cor but you can't say it was made to conquer the mainstream.fb forced to record cor?i am sure that this is not the case since sony fired him soon after.

I don't think so. For me, COR marks the end of the "first" solo era (FB self-titled/Teenager) and the beginning of the Catholics-era and has components of both. For example, Marsist, Cult of Ray and the two instrumentals tend to belong to the first one. On the other hand, the powerful and "simple" sound is truly a Catholics trademark. Also, the style of the lyrics has changed dramatically. I like this album very much, altough I prefer the first two albums to all other ones. The Marsist and especially Cult of Ray are real crackers. I can't help but I think the latter one is one of the best Pixies-Song he has ever written. Imagine Cult of Ray being performed by them, especially with David Lovering on the drums... by the way, this topic should have been posted in some other forum... |
