Yesterday I attended my third FB gig and probably the best one, though the shortest. The band and the songs were great, the sound was excellent, the hall was full - there were 400 or 500 fans I think, most of them in their thirties - and the ambiance was good – sorry if it sounds banal, it’s simply the truth. Rich Gilbert was quite sober (I mean, quite calm and discreet) and looked in a good mood. One hour before the gig, he appeared with his (unplugged) guitar on the footbridge between the stage and the dressing rooms and presented us with a silent, funny solo concert.
It’s interesting, and a little surprising, to note that 19 of the 25 songs the band played are recent... or date back to the Pixies era. Quite surprising also – and, yes, heartwarming – is the fact that the public really seemed to know and enjoy the recent songs. Believe me or not, Robert Onion, California Bound, Massif Centrale, Velvety and Nadine were as much acclaimed as Where Is My Mind or Cactus. The whole gig was great but there was a real moment de grâce when the band performed successively – and without a break – Headache, Robert Onion, This Old Heartache, WIMM and California Bound.
The setlist :
I Need Peace Caribou 666 Monkey Gone To Heaven I Love Your Brain How You Went So Far Horrible Day Headache Robert Onion This Old Heartache Where Is My Mind California Bound Southbound Bevy When Will Happiness Find Me Again New House of the Pope Jane the Queen of Love Massif Centrale Velvety I Want Rock’n’Roll Cactus Nadine ------ Cold Heart of Stone Bullet Nimrod’s Son The Black Rider
Oops, I forgot to say – I offered the Man a bottle of white wine (Riesling cuvée 2001, Médaille d’or 2002 des grand vins alsaciens). I met him after the gig, as he was quietly chatting with some fans. He was with Scott and I heard the drummer talking about having a drink downtown or somewhere. I took immediately advantage of this unexpected occasion. I gave the bottle to Frank and told him something brilliant like "I know you love good wines, now you’ll know I love your music!" To say the truth I felt like the famous trees of the Arizona desert – petrified. Frank looked at the bottle and said : "Hey – great! Great! Thanks !" He seemed a little tired but he shook firmly and spontaneously my hand as I was desperately trying to remember at least one of the 50 questions I had planned to ask him. Finally I took my copy of SMYT out of my coat and asked him for an autograph. Simple coincidence or not, he put his signature on the lyrics of New House of the Pope (which is, as you probably know, his personal translation of "Châteauneuf-du-Pape", his favorite wine). He thanked me again and went away before I could remember my first question.
I have already listened to SMYT 5 times today...

Yay! Well done, Yann.
I actually considered bringing a bottle of Chateauneuf-du-Pape at the Lille gig but finally decided against it, mostly for practical reasons. I didn't meet Frank there anyway...
Hurrah for Riesling! :)

I asked him in '94 before a cleveland solo show opening for they might be giants about smoking some POT ,but got declined because he said it would mess with his vocal chords before the show. Anyway, got an autograph and a song dedicated to me at the show! DUKE OF EARL!!! |

Merci Franck...
In fact I was lucky. Without the help of a nice girl who works at the Laiterie, the security personnel would certainly have confiscated (and drunk - assholes!) my wine. Moreover - thanks again to that girl - I met one of the guys in charge of the reception of the artists, and this guy told me when and where I could meet the Man after the gig. I had to wait about 30 mn but it was worth it.
By the way, Frank often brings me luck... Last year I won a FB competition organized by Cooking Vinyl and got double-signed copies of BLD, DW and the famous Purple Tapes. (Needless to say I keep them in a safe deposit box, protected night and day by a minefield and two armed guards.) |

Hi tout le monde
well I've just registered.
thanx for the review; I was also in Strasbourg (I live there). je ne savais pas que Frank aimait le Châteauneuf-du-Pape; je penserai à en apporter la prochaine fois!
well, I had also the chance to see him after the show; it was not a "horrible day", not at all! but I'm a bit disappointed bec. he was really tired, first he came with a great smile on his face, after almost half an hour, and I asked him for a photo. He sais "yeah", but looked everywhere but never looked at me. suddenly he took me on the shoulder and smiled for the photo (hey, not so quick!!!) he had some bottles in his arms
there were other fans with me, maybe the ones who took a picture of us are on this forum?
I don't know what to say, but I wanted to talk with Frank about the song "Cactus", which David Bowie covered on his 2002 album Heathen. It's interesting to say that David Bowie is also on tour and that he plays Cactus on almost every show! Great and I'm really glad to hear Cactus three times in two weeks only!!! I wish he had spoken a bit with me on that, but then a guy came and asked if it was true about the Pixies'reforming... I felt bad at that moment and Frank seemed to be a little angry bec. of that he went away and I only managed to get my ticket autographed...
before that I was pleased to speak with Dave (still doesn't speak French!!!), I have to finish my film to have the photos at last! hope they're great. Dave is really great, said the next time they play he'll speak French with us, he was really wonderful when I asked for the photo, took me immediatly on the shoulder... incredible and signed my ticket and those of other fans there.
just to say that I don't know why Frank did not speak French with us!?! where is our great friend in 2001, saying "bonsoir" and after the show saying "à la prochaine" with a great smile?
but it was easy to see that he was tired
cette photo est aussi celle parue dans les DNA (local paper) le 9 novembre.
well, Frank, c'est notre ami pour la vie special thanks to Dave, who said "au revoir" to us!!! |
