I consider myself reasonably intelligent, with a wide variety of musical tastes. The only thing i don't like is Top 40 Country. I just don't seem to "get" it. I'm going to try again this weekend. Do any of you have any opinions on the album? Is it considered one of his stronger or weaker albums?
Thanks! |

Yeah, most seem to consider it his weaker album.

But most of us still love the hell out of it nonetheless. Men In Black? Cult of Ray? Jesus Was Right? Last Stand of Shazeb? These are all quite tasty, in my meager opinion. But it definitely takes a bit more time than some of his other stuff. |

I think it's one of his best; easily one of my favorites. Whenever I want something that rocks I just pop it in. |

When I first got COR, I hated it. I was expecting more TOTY. Well COR certainly isn't TOTY but I love it in a whole new way. For one thing, it predates all the "Emo-Punk" out there these days by nearly a decade but it's much more raw: approaching Iggy Pop raunchiness. Here's a breakdown of what I think of each track.
Marsist - only OK; I think it's kind of weak, actually. Men in Black - Good tune, great solo; much better soloing on this record than Rich Gilbert, imo. Punk Rock City - Kind of repetitive but not too bad You Ain't Me - The thing I love about this tune is that ultra-cool "licky-guitar-riff" played during the verses. It compliments the melody very well and makes it seem unbalanced but in a very good way. Jesus Was Right - Great song and again: great solo! I Don't Want to Hurt You (Every Single Time) - One of the first FB tunes to feature the "kooky chords" a la Kingly Cave, Villiage of the Sun. I think this song is far superior to them because it's much more subtle. The bass makes you think they're regular chords. Great melody and clever rhymes (gravity - cavity, etc). Mosh, Don't Pass the Guy - I like the live version better but this one's good too. Kicked in the Taco - I love the way this one starts: with the two guitar parts playing off one another, then it stuffs the bass down your throat and you're off and running. Creature Crawling - Great bass line on this one. The part that seems tacked on is where it goes, "There will be nothin but you!" I dunno...it feels like he wanted to finish early. up to that point, the tune is great. Adventure and the Resolution - Amazing guitar work. There's a particular section that I admire where the guitar solo seems to be all over the place and then "meets" the chord structure from out of nowhere, just before he starts playing 2 sets of triplets. It's unexpected but very nice! Dance War - Single guitar performance throughout the whole piece. i don't know if it was one take or not but it's still pretty impressive. Good solid tune appropriate for...uhh...dancing? Cult of Ray - Very unique song structure, interesting chord changes, good lyrics. Last Stand of Shazeb Andleeb - By far, the best song on the album, especially the solo at the end. I'd love to hear this one live.

I had a copy for years before I really got into it, then during one of those long dry spells (six months, probably--ha!) between albums, I thought, well hell, let's give Cult of Ray another try. It kicks ass on a walkman. Once I was able to place it as a transitional album between TOTY and what would become FB&TC it really clicked for me. You can tell that he's going somewhere new but isn't quite there yet. I really like it now, though. |

I would agree, mereubu, about the transitional album. I believe it was the first album produced by FB himself. I recall a quote from the time, "It's pure Frank". COR the song is a fun tune to play and it's one of the few cd's I've purchased in which the liner notes can be used as a poster.
It's probably the album I listen to least, but that doesn't mean it doesn't rock!

I loved it from the first time I heard it (The Marsist, man...!). It was my favorite for a long time. I think I've sorta outgrown it, though.

I think it is a good album - though it has some weak moments. However - I can not understand the process behind picking out songs for the album. I think the extra cd has at least two killers - village of the sun and baby, that's art - and announcement (men in black-b side) is also nice. In fact - all the orginal frank black material on the extra-cd or b-sides is good, and definetley better than some of the tracks on cor (like the marsist, jesus was right and dance war). Has anyone heard how mr Black picks out his tunes, reasons for not including songs etc.? |

I'm with Merebu also.... I had this album for about two years (and had only listened to it a couple of times) before I finally picked it up and decided to give it another listen. Then it hit me. I love COR, but I understand that it is not particularly easy to get into. IMO some of Franks best work is on that album. Give it time and you'll love it.

It's Frank's weakest for sure. But even Frank's worst is pretty good shit. I think it was much harder for those of us who were fans before it came out. How the hell can you expect to follow Teenager? |

Transitional is dead right, Cult of Ray sounds like Frank wasn't totally into it, still finding his way, it lacks the energy and sparkle of his other stuff. When Men In Black came out, I thought holy moly, Frank's coming back as a full on heavy rocker - I think the album was produced by Rick Rubin too, or on Rick's label - but when the album arrived it was full of slow songs with no tune (I Don't Want To Hurt You etc). Still I saw him on the COR tour, supported by the Wannadies, and he totally rocked, so I didn't lose the faith (faith which has been amply rewarded by all subsequent releases, by the way).

I'm with El Barto. I saw him on the TOTY tour and he opened with The Marsist. Fabulous...
Despite the sound/structure of the songs on the album, I am always taken by the theme. I am a big fan of Ray Bradbury and I am fairly confident that is why I love this album so much. I would endorse reading Bradury in concert with listening to the CD. From the completely Sci-fi MARTIAN CHRONICLES, to the more fantastical SOMETHIG WICKED THIS WAY COMES alot of it is in COR. In fact, I think Bradbury and FB have very similar sentimentality which is refelected (in FB) well after COR - I would imagine most obviously on SMYT.

I've said it before... when I knew nothing really about FB, I was into Surfa Rosa in like 96 or 97 and my roomate brought home a tape of COR, and told me dude (fb) still plays. I listened to the shit out of this album, it's what really got me into FB solo. So I love the album. But as with most frank these days, I just don't listen to it much. I love it, he's my fav., I think he's the best. Listening to his music just makes me want to see him live so bad it hurts, worse than feringitis, which I have now, why I am not at work and posting the shit out of the site today on penicillin (sp) and Jack Daniels...

I love The Adventure and the Resolution as well as Marsist and Men in Black, there's something that makes it stick out from the fb/toty stuff and the catholics stuff, though, not sure how to place it. Does the Marsist remind anyone else of how The Modern Dance (the album) by Pere Ubu opens, if even vaguely combining that with Take Meta Mars by The Flaming Lips?

Maybe because you've been turned onto frank too late. If you'd followed since the pixies or the self titled album maybe you'd be able to grasp the fact that it is a good album and not something too take litely. Anyhow, quite listening to POP or should I say POOP? |

I disagree. I had bought every new Pixies/FB when released since Bossanova and I was hugely disappointed with COR. Compared to Teenager (the nonpareil MONSTER) it seemed half-baked. Granted, there are several great songs, but compared with Frank's first two albums it was pretty weak. And still is. |

I love COR. It might be because it was the first Frank I ever had and so there is some nostalgia factor there or something, but I think it's pretty great. The Marsist into Men in Black is just fabulous, IMHO.
Agree about the headphones comment too, miss mereubu. |

It always reminds me of "Spin Me Right Round" by Dead Or Alive or "You Trip Me Up" by Jesus and Mary Chain.

Kicked in the Taco is an absolute classic - makes me laugh every time.
The reason COR sticks out a bit from the rest for me is Marsist, as it is the opener. When I heard it for the first time I was a bit dubious, (TOTY was the first FB I heard, then FB/FB). COR works much better for me played on random select!
Not my favourite but still play it. |
