It's very strange the way Frank's music works. Ever since I got Pistolero about 4 months ago I thought it was incredible that I liked it on first listen, but then yesterday just all of the sudden I realized that it may very well be his best cd ever and possibly the best cd ever. I know most of y'all hate it, but do any of you think it's one of the best?

I bought 'Pistolero' on vinyl when I was in Seattle. Then I realized my record player didn't work, so this is one album I haven't heard much. I'll have to find access to it and give a response.

Yes. It's tied w/ TOTY for me.
I can sorta see why other people might not like Pistolero so much. It's a little inconsistent in places (compare it with DITS, which is highly consistent, just with fewer peaks), the general sound is kinda samey and lacking in emotional dynamics, and Rich Gilbert was still trying to find his footing within the Catholics as lead guitarist. Yet, I personally think it's a masterpiece of back-to-basics, in-your-face rock 'n' roll and can see why some would call it not just Frank's best solo album, but his best album period. |

Alright, that's it, I'm firing it up again. It took me a long time to like this one but the last time I played it I had this same epiphany.

First fb+the c album I got, one of the best, but you cannot say that he has a best album. I go through periods of liking different ones, right now its devils workshop. But yeah, used to be my favourite and probably will once more |

If you're really angry one day, Pistolero is the best FB-album to play. Afterwards your anger has been neutralized, and you can put on other stuff. Works for me.

I tore right through Pistolero the first time I heard it, and by the end of the day I knew those songs backwards and forwards. I'm not exactly sure what it is about that album in particular, but (as my daughter says) it just went right into my brain. Definitely one of the very best, and there's not another quite like it. It's punk-alicious.

My friends who listened Gun's and Roses, Motley Crue, Jackyl, Def Leppard when they were sixteen, got hooked with Frank when I made them listen FB&Cs and Pistolero. Before they thought it was too "arty".

I've been playing Pisto a lot these past few weeks. yeah, I love it. It is a good album if you're angry but also good at the end of the day. Just crank it and wind down. It's right up there with the best for me.

Pistolero was a favorite of mine for a while. I still think it's an excellent album. I'm going to need to listen to it again sometime soon. There are a lot of great tunes on there.

Yeah, Pistolero's definitely an asskicker. It was the first favourite Frank Black disc I ever had, and I've been listening to it a fair bit as of late. Western Star is an awesome song. When I'm listening to it at work or some such place the song most others seem to notice/ask about is Billy Radcliffe.

Pistolero is better than the FB and the C's album I'm a real Gilbert fan and I think his solo's and I love your brain and Tiny Heart are freaking good Besides all that, it was my first FB album so I have only good memories of that record

Pistolero is my favorite FB& the C's album.
Well actually they all are. But this one is equally so. This is the best HARD FB&C album. |

Some really great songs on this record. But one thing I hate is 85 weeks being followed by the blaringly annoying beginning of Starting to lose it, not the best way to follow up a mellow tune in my opinion. I love your Brain and Tiny Heart are a little trite sounding as well. The rest of this album kicks serious ass however. |

Pistolero f--ckin ROCKS which I think is the consensus here. I like it a lot better than the first Catholics effort. It definitely is "punkalicious" .. the man sounds pissed on most of this record. It was great to hear him go completely insane on Switched You, and the second half of So. Bay makes it one of my favorites. I love the very end, with those spaghetti western tail-outs .. you can visualize dust-devils gusting down the deserted road of some old western town that has been completely demolished from some shoot-em-up .. like the band came into town, tore shit up, and left nothing behind em but empty space (through your ears/in your head)..

FB says that SMYT is his divorce-album. Then Pistolero must be mine. I packed my bag and moved out one day in 1999, and in the evening a friend took me to a concert - I guy called Frank Black was playing in Oslo. Had never heard of him... Next day I bought five FB-albums, of course Pistolero was among them. I guess he song som Pistolero songs that night.

Pistolero didn't really click for me right away. That might have something to do with the fact that I downloaded it (legally, from eMusic, for anyone who's thinking of reporting me to the RIAA and/or Frank), but there are other albums that I downloaded and loved (like the Posies' first album), so I don't think that's the whole story. It might just be that I haven't listened to it as much as the others, so it hasn't had as much of a chance to grow on me. There are some excellent songs on there, though. Billy Radcliffe, 85 Weeks, I Think I'm Starting To Lose It...

I must interject and say that I cannot believe how much the first Catholics album continues to improve and grow as it ages. I cannot stop listening to it at the moment. This comment takes nothing away from the original statement regarding Pistolero. Just makes me wonder about the first album is all!

I had Pistolero for two years before it grabbed me. Listening in a car no less, bombing down a country highway when all a sudden "Yo soy un Pistolero..." I was shakin in my boots. Its wierd how FB records have that kind of lag for me. I hardly gave DITS the time of day till last year. Now I like BLD even though I bought SMYT the day it came out. *shrug* |

Almost hate to admit this, but there's still alot of FB I don't have. I don't have Pistolero or DITS, though I'm familiar with almost all of the songs on both albums. From the time I first got into FB, which was back in 1994 or 95, when TOTY came out, and I was about 14, I never knew for the longest time that FB had any more albums afterwards, as I bought all my music from Cat's, which is mainstream all the way. Then, one day I found self-titled FB&TC, and I picked it up. Don't know why, but it never really clicked with me for the longest time...then I bought BLD and Devil's Workshop last year, and I was hooked on them, I just haven't picked up the albums I missed in the meantime...I definitely need to. The only thing, though, I didn't think "Oddballs" was that spectacular an album. |

I don't read this board a whole lot, but when I have read it one of the big surprises was seeing so much dislike for Pistolero. As far as I'm concerned Pistolero is a rock monster and, front to back, the most energetic album Frank has done since he was a Pixie. Everyone I've ever played it for loves it.
Also, the show I saw about a month before Pistolero came out was full of the new songs and was the best, sweatiest, most draining Frank Black show I've yet seen. |

For myself, of all Mr. Black's recorded output (and I got'em all, except for those Pixies B-sides) Pistolero gets the most relistens. The first FB&C's album is a close second. Pistolero rocks with more wit than most anything I've heard. I like the basic rock 'n roll instrumentation, which ties together some tracks with widely varying dynamics. It's more Johnny Cash than Shania Twain, which is my style. However, I enjoy all of Mr. Black's work and respect his current artistic course. |

I can't name my favorite Frank Black song; there are a number of songs he's done that I just consider "perfect" and trying to rank them is pointless. "I Switched You" is absolutely one of them though. (FTR, "This Old Heartache" off SMYT is another.)
The rest of Pistolero has yet to grab me, but as others have acknowledged, his music often takes a while to catch hold of you, even if you're a fan. |
