I don't like Pistolero. I've tried and tried...But I just like "Billy Radcliffe" and "Western star".
The biggest mistake for me is the sound, too basic... And some melodies are silly punk

hands down one of the best -the key phrase being 'one of' pistolero, devils' workshop -hell all the catholics lp's for me outshine the early solo stuff -and i do like that early stuff a lot...

Blarg007; you are surely confused. I love frank Black as much as the next guy; but how you can suggest that 'devil's workshop'; which is without doubt, except for the song 'whiskey in your shoes', the biggest heap of shit I've ever heard, with the possible exception of the smashing pumpkins 'adore' album, as being better than say 'cult of ray' or to a lesser extent 'teenager of the year' (even the first album had its merits). When Devil's workshop is simply a collection of half thought out should-be B-sides; whose only possible reason for release is to illustrate (through its incompetence) that 'black letter days' is one of the greatest albums of all time. Blind allegiance to latter-day frank is no excuse. Oh + pistelero is good but flawed! although 'I love your brain' has the greatest guitar intro of all time. What this site needs is a historical background for all the references and allusion in frank Black songs; who the hell are the WIYOT? Billy Radcliffe, who slept for 85 weeks, where + when the fuck is the st francis dam disaster and so on... that'd be bitchin! |

Just some other thoughts on this.
Well this was partially addressed in another post concerning FB's straight to tape (2-Track) recording style but, sonically, from an audio engineering perspective the FB&C title album and Pistolero are his best. Nothing wrong with the very first three...they sound great. But those first two with the Catholics...wow. Very large sounding, excellent production to capture FB (&C) as they really are. Great space and ALL the instruments are in your face. (I really dig the drum sound on them.) The production dropped immediately with Oddballs but that was a hodge-podge collection of b-sides so ok. Dog in the Sand was good. But not quite up to the level of FB&C/Pistolero....they went for some milders sounds instrument-wise too. Black Letter Days and Devil's Workshop are a very noticeable step down production-wise from FB&C/Pistolero. Not as spacious, not as big. Also the songs are not as cohesive sound-wise...meaning they dont all sound like they are from the same album.
I know he (they) is doing things in his own studio but I dont remember if that started with or after Dog in the Sand but it definitely covers Black Letter Days and Devil's Workshop. So I figure that is responsible for the change.
Now this in now way refers to the creative content, I am just refering to the quality of the recordings. I really thought he was on to something with FB&C/Pistolero, as far as studio productions go. My guess is there is a considerable difference in cost between the way he did FB&C/Pistolero and the albums that followed(in-house). I mean sh|t I would buy his stuff if he released it on cassette! Just making an alternate observation.

I don't like pistolero. I've never had. Too loud, poor melodies.
I think "western star" and "Billy Radcliff" would be better songs with a different sound, more like the first 2 albums or SMYT.

Actually I quite like Adore, which goes to show that its all just opinion, and doesn't really matter.

Pistolero was probably the FB&theC's album I liked the best at the first listens. It's still definitely one of my favorites, with Western Star as a top highlight. I was surprised that during some Survivor game here I Love Your Brain seemed so unpopular-- that's such a cool rockin' song!
The 'bronze' album was one I never fully got into, regardless of my love for All My Ghosts. I had my own epiphany over The Cult of Ray recently... so one never knows... |
