OK, so you have a friend, they love the Pixies, you've indoctrinated them on Catholicism and converted them to FB fans, and of course, they know all about the Breeders and the Kim Deal connection. They have a 5 CD changer and want a different artist in every slot - one they've never heard before, preferably. They're as eclectic as you, so anything will do. What 5 albums do you give them?

This may have been done, but what the hell... keep those of us falling asleep sitting up hanging on to consciousness.

1. John Williams - Empire Strikes Back
2. Spoon - Kill The Moonlight
3. Radiohead - OK Computer*
4. Ween - White Pepper
5. New Pornographers - Electric Version

Radiohead is probably a bit too well known and this hypothetical friend has probably heard OK Computer, but... I suppose I could swap it for the Flaming Lips' Soft Bulletin.

What would YOU put in the changer for them?

I don't have any friends but if I did I would suggest:

1. The Blue Aeroplanes - Life Model

2. Morcheeba - Charango

3. Ennio Morricone - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

4. Magazine - Secondhand Daylight

5. The Dickies - Dawn of the Dickies

COF - love these list type threads. I might suggest a top five Frank Black thread list soon. (I should stop watching Hi Fidelity!)

I haven't heard any of these, how sad is that?

Yeah, I did and still do the top 5 lists all the time, and more often than not for inappropriate situations.

Yeah but look at my reply to realmeanmotorscutor's list. It just goes to show that there is plenty of music out there.

Yeah, whats Neutral Milk Hotel all about? I've heard people raving about that record in a 'best band ever' kind of way... Somebody please explain.
1) Johnny Cash - 'American III: Solitary Man'
2) Groop Dogdrill - 'Every Six Seconds'
3) Godspeed You Black Emperor - 'Lift Yr Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven'
4) Bad Astronaut - 'Acrophobe'
5) Therapy? - 'Troublegum'

I'm gonna put substitutes, just because I can: anything by Nick Drake, Wildhearts' 'Fishing For Luckies', PiL's 'Metal Box', Nick Cave ('Best Of'), The Hives' 'Veni Vidi Vicious'

I don't think NMH can be explained, cheeseman. Just buy 'In the Aeroplane Over the Sea' and let it enrapture you.

Good call with Therapy?, although I like some of their stuff more than Troublegum.

My list.
1. Turbonegro - Apocalypse Dudes
2. Modest Mouse - The Lonesome Crowded West
3. Ween - quebec (or The Mollusk, as those are their most accesible records)
4. Dan Bern - Dan Bern
5. Mudhoney - Tomorrow Hit Today

This is kind of difficult without knowing what kind of music base this person has, but I'll try to go for some slightly more obscure stuff here.

1. Camper Van Beethoven - self-titled
2. Young Fresh Fellows - The Men Who Loved Music
3. Hypnotic Clambake - Kent the Zen Master
4. XTC - Skylarking
5. Sugarplastic - Bang, the Earth Is Round

quote:
why isn't there a GBV self titled?

I tend to think self-titling an album is an act of laziness on a band's part. On the other hand, I think it's cool when a band writes a song with the same name as the band. Maybe Frank should write a song called "Frank Black And The Catholics," or maybe just "The Catholics."

Here's five that I've been playing in the car lately, I nearly put Therapy? - Infernal Love in there, but swapped it for Dover, as I think they don't get enough credit here in the UK, don't know about elsewhere in the world (other than Spain)

1) Jeff Buckley - Grace
2) Grant Lee Buffalo - Fuzzy
3) PJ Harvey - Stories from the city, stories from the sea
4) Snuff - Numb Nuts
5) Dover - Late at Night

Fair enough, if I was putting 5 CD's in my changer I'd probably choose Infernal Love, or I'd cheat and use Ten Year Plan.

Yeah, accessibility helps the cause when you're giving someone new stuff. Usually the people asking you for stuff are people in the process of being converted from mainstream crap anyway, so...

Yeah man, I guess I didn't think about that. If it was for someone else, you'd have to expose them to the more accesible stuff first. Troublegum is the one that hooked me way back... Sorry! I mean, I would never give anyone "Suicide Pact" and expect them to like the band without hearing any of the early stuff. I retract my earlier comment and now I say "Good call with Therapy?, Troublegum is an excellent jumping-off point for any un-initiated person."

i would probably start with some personal classics:
1 - violent femmes\hallowed ground
2 - husker du\zen arcade
3 - zounds\the curse of the zounds
4 - tuxedo moon\desire-no tears
5 - concrete blonde\mexican moon
(though to my opinion cd changers are of dubious taste.too kitch with all those lights and leds and stuff.one cd tray is more than enough.)

presented in mind control\where available

Suicide Pact = run for hills I think. I guess Troublegum would have to be the first place to start, unless you counted Ten Year Plan... (which doesn't have enough Infernal Love-era material, but does have the bonus disc with the Misfits cover),

3. Beulah - When Your Heartstrings Break
4. Kinks - Preservation
5. Clash - Give 'Em Enough Rope

Didn't think anyone would be paying attention.

(Five minutes of alternatly staring at the screen and the track listing)

I can't choose. I'd go with Act I simply to have 'Sweet Lady Genevieve' in there, but I like more songs in Act II.

I can't choose. Disqualify me.

It IS a tough call. Sweet Lady Genevieve is a great song, Shepherds of the Nation is a great VillageGreenPrezSoc parody. And I think I like shouting out HE'S EVIL better than DEMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMOLITION. Although Act 1 has A Change in the Weather, AND Cricket. HEY, i just saw that Rhino released both Acts in one package. THat counts! Your list is saved! I only have the reissued version on 2 separate discs, and the separate lps.
