Since the color and artwork for Frank's eponymous solo debut has been recently brought up, I figured I'd ask how people feel about the album artwork and color scheme affecting the sound of the record? A friend of mine in high school made fun of me for wanting to preserve the quality of the jacket artwork for my CDs and laughed when I said that it was a part of the music and changed the sound. For me, the artwork has always been a crucial part of a record. Weezer's "blue album" will forever have a bright blue sound to me, whereas their next record Pinkerton has a darker (not goth) but wintery sound because the cover was primarily black, with snow on the ground.
I could go on, but I think you get the point. What are some records you can think of where the artwork really has an impact on that sound?
I feel that with CDs, the album artwork isn't nearly as exciting since it's so small. I think that with the phasing out of vinyl being sold, album artwork got much less imaginative.

you're right

to put it simple

Pinkerton with a blue cover
and their debut with the dark japanese cover
would be really weird
the first is a light record
the second a dark one

Somebody had to bring Pixies up: Doolittle, although I think the music matches the sound rather than vice versa.

Other than that I'd say Californication by RHCP's, which is all I can think of for now.

How about Pet Sounds for the complete opposite?

Cheeseman, do you mean the music matches the artwork? instead of music matches the sound?

it's true, the impact of the entire product influences your response to the music; it's why cds are less satisfying than albums; it's why downloading is less satisfying than having the cd w/booklet; etc . . .

Um. Yes. Thanks for pointing that out and making me look like a fool.

The new Eels' album has terrible artwork, and I really do think that's a major cause of me not liking it very much...

Souljacker's artwork, however, got me really excited to listen to the CD within, and I wasn't disappointed.
