oh london sweet london. what a night. long time listener, first time caller here heh.. but still. great through and through. pissed off when the first decent reception of the night came for velouria but the crowd redeemed themselves a bit by descending into madness for black letter days. two surprises tonight:
1) mr scott boutier on the drums. oh yes! 2) freedom rock!!!!!
enough said. i'll let others fill in the gaps. i need peace.
song of the night though - cold heart of stone. just perfect. |

I think these were played (no particular order)
1. Nadine 2. New House of the Pope 3. Horrible Day 4. Massif Centrale 5. When Will Happiness Find Me Again 6. The Snake 7. California Bound 8. Cold Heart of Stone 9. Black Letter Day 10. How You Went So Far 11. Farewell Bend 12. Jane the Queen of Love 13. Velvety 14. Robert Onion 15. Bullet 16. Hermaphroditos 17. I Need Peace 18. Abstract Plain 19. Headache 20. Freedom Rock 21. Fare Thee Well 22. Caribou 23. Cactus 24. Velouria
Awesome gig. Joe Kidd started the show off and then after about 4 or 5 songs Scott came on to replace him. Later on in the gig Scott called Joe back to the drums to play Horrible Day.
Highlights: Scott's intro's to Bullet and Nadine. Fantastic!

was a great show.... took along my bro-in-law who had never heard anything frank and he loved it - he also thought it was fucking loud, but i think that was just caused by our proximity to the speaker stack.... the highlights for me where the tracks off the first solo album - they were fantastic, and i need peace.....
also the encore, with the 4 slower songs, worked very very well...ya always expect loud thrashy encores, but frank and the boys pulled out the quieter ones.....

You saw 14/10 gig right? I saw 15/10, and it was supremely ace. I'll give myself a slap now for not knowing as many of the songs as I would have liked (I'm a poor ex-student, I have no money for fripperies like cd's...). However, each one sounded like an old friend, and the ones I did know were just immense. You should have seen the smile that washed across my face when Caribou kicked off. The only disappointment, I feel, was no Manitoba. I think it would make a superb closer, but to be honest thats just splitting hairs. Suffice to say the gig was stunning. Simon

Was fabulous - was lovely. I have a bit of Frank Black Blues today b/c it is all over and I no longer have it to look forward too. I was in the front row and took loads of photos, I hope they come out! Have to say "the Daves" were very cute - they played one half of a song back to back, and they all clearly like each other which is nice to see. Was cool to see Scott up there as well. Frank introduced him and talked a bit and then said "enough chit chat!" which made me think of the whole 'dancing bear' post. He and McDave exhanged a smile after that.
Bang on!

Was wicked awesome man!
Had to say I'm glad I went & got to see Mr. Boutier on drums...
Loved the whole gig highlight was Farewell bend cos it was jsut brilliantly done!
The whole experience was great, meeting other boarders: steveplymouth, old neptuna, bazza & ramona was terrific, and the only downside was the venue...

The band to a man were in astounding form - well worth the pilgrimage from Devil's Island. Rich Gilbert should get his own TV show (the content of which I leave to your imaginations). It's gigs like this which boost my zeal for Black evangelism: i.e. bombarding friends and family with sampler tapes, until they too are hopelessly in the thrall of the Great Non-Dancing Bear. Long live the King.

It was a fantastic night, Freedon Rock, Abstract Plain and Headache were high points for me, as were Catus and Caribou.
Frank seemed to be in good sprits and did say a few words inbetween song but no dancing bear impressions unfortunetly. |

Hi I've often viewed but never posted!
Thought last nights gig was totally amazing. I agree that it took a tiny while to get going ie after Velouria and so missed an opportunity to go mental for Hermaphroditos but after this point it was cooking. I also remember at one point being totally knackered from jumping around when I heard the opening strum of Nadine and thought was 'Oh no not now!' Other highlights for me were Abstract Plane, Headache, Cactus, Robert Onion, & Snake but the most amazing were Black Letter Day (now officially my favourite FB tune ever) and Bullet.
Now I've such buzz I'm at work with all 8 solo FB albums on shuffle!
Roll on December

Yeah that was an amazing experiance. massif rocked me hard. Great set. Well done to Dave P for rolling cigarettes in the microscopic gaps between songs. Scott was on great form too. bazza/ramona/leah/old neptuna- you guys were great and its made my many nights of posting rubbish on here seem worthwhile |

The Man was preaching to the converted last night the place was rocking from the first number. It was great to see a packed Astoria crowd give Frank and the boys such a rousing send off on their tour of the continent. Roll on December when he is back at Shepherd's Bush. Wouldn't it be great if they could video the Shepherd's Bush concert like they did the Siouxsie and the Banshees Seven Year Itch Tour last year so we could watch the DVD whilst Frank does his duties back home in North America. Of course they would have to substitute Rich Gilbert's prancing for that of Siouxsie's as The Man doesn't do dancing. |

Great gig! The band were cool and i liked the fact they seemed to be enjoying themselves. Highlight of the gig for me was probably Black Letter Days - though opening the gig with Velvety was fantastic.
I really enjoyed Serafin as well . |

Ew - I thought Serafin were crap. So loud just for the sake of being loud and just too cool for their own good, or at least they think so. The bass player was almost killing me with his badass-ness (new word).
My personal show highlights were Hermaphroditos, Robert Onion, Velvety (fabulous opener!) and The Snake. Even if FB won't dance, Rich (with his new wave groove) and McDave (bopping all over the place) make up for it.
I could go on and on obviously. I have a Frank Black hangover and my head is in the clouds! |

Really? You don't have Black Letter Days or the new CD?
For the record the encore was: Farewell Bend Cold Heart of Stone When Will Happiness Find Me Again Fare Thee Well |

Are you all gutted there was no Manitoba last night? I think that would have made a superb closer (it does on the album...) More than made up for with Caribou however (I know, I know, get over the Pixies, but if he keeps playing 'em, I'll keep loving 'em).
I agree with those who have post-FB hangover: i was actually feeling slightly ill today

I accidentially posted this in the wrong place, so here...
Amazing concert! I've seen three in a row and this was the best. Stood at the end in the beginning, but I just HAD to get to the front, and during the craziness of Veloria. Fantastic gig. Freedom Rock was just amazing, I loved hearing it.
The crowd on front was really into it, I screamed along with quite a few people. Dozens of people crowd surfed (a first in Frank Black gigs for me), and then they were escorted out. I stood right behind a tall guy in a green t-shirt, and behind me another guy kept trying to reach his girlfriend? and was annoying, but other then that, fantastic :-)
Oh, I'm probably behind, but what's the song Frank covered in the end? He closed the other two concerts I saw (Oxford and Cambridge) with the same song.

Fare Thee Well, by Burl Ives (actually, it might be an old folk song popularised by Burl Ives, I'm not sure if he wrote it or not).
Go to: http://www.oldies.com/product/view.cfm/id/66622.html
for Burl's version - well, about 10 seconds of Burl's version (Fare Thee Well, Oh Honey)

This was a classic gig. A lot more 'rock' than I had expected with the new album being so much more country, but the encore was great. As Donnie and Marie said... Amazingly my work takes me to Brussels on the day of the FB gig there so I will be at that one too as well as Shepherd's Bush, which is a better venue but a bugger to get home to South East London from... Elvis lives! (shame he didn't do the Prawn Song!) |

I love the astoria! What a cool gig, a different and better vibe in the crowd compared to what im used to. Although about half way through this one guy in front of me was jumping around like a fool, and just when i thought "someone should hit him", the guy next to me did! He dropped like a stone, and i didnt see him for rest of the night! HA HA
Alot of Pixies fans though, Come on the Shepherds Bush!!

I've been trying not to read these live reviews mostly to minimize my Euro-envy, but damn it, sounds like a great show. I Need Peace is back? That's awesome. Freedom Rock does indeed rock live, Mike will have to tell his story about how he might be at least partially responsible for them bringing that one back out. Seriously, this sounds like a very cool show.
Very cool too that someone thought they recognized songs from the tribute album. If we can bring the songs to the masses, all the better.

I thought that there was a random UK date in Dec at the Shepherd Bush Empire..... although I might be wrong. I suppose a trip to the US, or rather Canada (as I haven't been there yet) might be in order to see the man.... there is no way I can go a tour without seeing him play.
