It was so nice to see that many people goin craxy for Frank. There are times when i feel isolated in my obession, (except when i'm on the forum).
The people at the front were going crazyand i've never seen crowd surfing at one of his shows before.
Frank did seem a little surprised at the reception he recieved.

forgot to mention that we saw rich gilbert when we were going into the astoria. However, none of us were sure it was him until we saw him on stage later, so we didn't say anything...

What a great gig. I was on the front barrier the whole time. I think I was standing next to Leah (flat cap and Guiness) and I guess Ramona and the other frankblack.net forum members although I was with some friends it was just coincidence I was also next to the meet.

Who's the man that won't cop out when there's danger all about?

He does play the SBE on the 1st but then he's back home so far as I know. If you're looking for a trip, you could come to Vancouver which is probably the closest place to you in North America anyway, and then head down and see him in Portland and Seattle like we did. Of course, the west coast and Ontario are very much Americanized anyway, so you really wouldn't get a feel for Canada, so maybe you just have to start in Vancouver and work your way west.

There's so much to see. I haven't even been to the east coast yet, which is like a whole different world from what I know/have heard. Nor Quebec. Nor the territories. But anyway, the point I was going to make is that a Saskatoon stop would definitely be in order, and moreover, a meeting of the two cult leaders to discuss various issues relating to new brainwashing techniques, etc.

This perplexes me. I saw them (WITH Dave P) in November of 02 and they played Freedom Rock. Do you mean Spring of 03? If so, that makes no sense to me.

Bit late jumping in as usual - buy hi to Ramona, Bazza, Leah, Steveplymouthuk & Steve2! That beer in the Angel Pub did the job, a German beer called 'Pantz' I think.

Have to say great night but I thought the sound wasn't great. Two loud or I'm too old or something. Never liked the Asoria though - Brixton Academy and Hammersmith Odeon piss on Astoria from a great height!

Putting that aside - the set was a good one. Great to see them change it around from gig to gig. Hermaphroditos & Massif Centrale stood out for me this time around. He seemed to put loads into Caribou, making it not just a crowd pleaser, (maybe just my boozy ears).

Wondering whether I'm ever going to hear Monitoba live - maybe in December eh?

If anyone gets good photos - send them to me! And I will do the same, I got about five that were solidly OK. Two of "the Dave's", a good one of McDave and Frank (where Frank has his leg up in the air - rocking out! And did anyone else notice his blue clogs? Nice!) and lastly one of McDave, Frank and Rich. I guess you can SORTA see Scott in the backrgound as well...

Nope, spring 02, shoulda' been more clear I guess. This spring would've been spring 03. Last was 02. But not really clear. He did admit to us straight out that he didn't know how to play it, I assure you, and on the second night we were bugging him a bit and Mike offered to teach him, and he said something to the effect of getting Frank to teach him it.

we'll come on! ...let's see 'em.

-maybe they should have a 'recent live photos' folder that people can
'upload' to in an easy fashion -within the 'FB live folder so for those that can't or don't know how to post them on the web and then
link to them can share pics faster.
i don't know,...your pics sound good though.

Sorry to hear about the job. Was it something like: 'I don't care if you fire me - i'm going to London to see Frank Black so f..k you!'?

If so then fair play to you girl! Good luck anyhow.

It WAS actually something like that. They weren't going to give me vacation time b/c I had taken three weeks off in the summer (when my grandmother passed away - WHAT a vacation!) and I also hated the job. So I left! One of the best choices I've made actually.

As for the photos, I wish I could upload them but I don't have a scanner and I don't think it will work by osmosis. Sorry.

Edit: I just read your profile, you're from Plymouth, haha I allways read your username as sleepy mouth uk for some reason. I have a friend who goes to Uni in Plymouth and I'm from Devon but I'm in Reading at Uni at the moment.

Okay, I am posting it for easy access:

Frank Black And The Catholics

@ London Astoria, 15 October 2003

If you know your alt-rock, Frank Black is a legend. The Pixies were arguably one of the most important bands of recent times, and it is generally accepted that they were a major influence on the two key bands of the nineties - Radiohead and Nirvana. In order to get some idea of the excitement still felt by Black's biggest fans, all you have to do is imagine how Nirvana fans would feel if they were able to see Kurt Cobain.

It is true that Frank Black and The Catholics have not yet generated a great deal of commercial or critical acclaim, but it is also true that they know exactly how to make great music, and, more to the point, they have at their helm one of the all-time greats of songwriting.

The Astoria gradually fills with people of all ages. It doesn't matter if they followed Frank after his Pixies days or perhaps started with more recent material and worked their way back. What is important is that they are here, ready and waiting for what promises to be a stellar gig. It's the last UK date on the Catholics' European tour and the tickets have been sold out for a long time. New British rock band Serafin start up their set as the people continue to pour in, and, unsurprisingly, are rather good. It is clear that the band appreciate the opportunity and that the crowd appreciate their effort.

Frank, however, is the man we came to see. At around nine o'clock he and the Catholics make their way to the stage to a thunderous reception. From the relative youngsters to the veterans of Surfer Rosa, we are all truly excited to be in the presence of our hero. Set-opener Velvety has us jumping around like it was 1988 (regardless of how old we were back then) and almost wetting ourselves in anticipation of the next two hours or so.

The gig is thick and fast, and the classics are belted out with no sign of slowing. There is little doubt that the man has an amazing back-catalogue of writing, and the Catholics seem only too happy to dip into the material conceived before they joined the fray.

Many of the songs have been around for the best part of a decade, but, to our delight, Black re-visits each of his many and varied albums, from the anthemic sing-alongs of Headache and Robert Onion to the best cuts from his critically acclaimed Teenager Of The Year LP (those being Abstract Plain and Freedom Rock, the latter of which generated scenes of frantic euphoria in the pit).

The eclectic set-list is dominated by songs from 2003's fantastic Show Me Your Tears, many of which sound just about as good as anything he has ever done. The outstanding Massif Centrale is joined by the likes of Snake, Horrible Day and a bruising rendition of Snake. Pixies songs are, of course, used sparingly to maximum effect. The opening chords of Cactus act as the starting pistol for sentimental jumping and jostling, and it's hard to describe the kind of nirvana generated by Caribou and Velouria (that boy can still holler, let me tell you).

A deafening chorus of cheers brings the band back for a four song encore, including the Pogues-esque When Will Happiness Find Me Again. Although a second encore is called for but not received, it is clear that a unique brand of happiness has found us all again, for one night at least. Long may Frank Black and his Catholics induce this kind of genuine excitement throughout the gigging world.

Why would anyone want to "get a feel" for Canada? Except for Vancouver, it's all strip malls and tundra.
