Whats you selective peoples ages? Unimportant yet im still enquiring. im 21, there seems to be a wide mix in the differences.
Also, what would you class FB&Cs Music Style? Whenever answering the ever dumb question 'what music are you into?'... 'Frank black & the Catholics'... 'What Style of music IS that?'...
BAH I dunno? what 'Style' IS it?! i like to think it isnt 'Stylalized' - great spelling.

I'm 28 my planetary friend. I think another forum member (sorry i forget who) described FB & C's sound as 'Americana' ('Amerikana'?) and i think that's the best description i've heard so far that hasn't pigeon-holed the band too much. |

I'm 28 too but I always say I am 25 because, I don't know why, my mind stopped there.
When someone asks me what kind of music is Frank Black, I always say it's "different". And just after this, normally I agree "I think you won't like it" (And most of the times it is so...)
I never heard "americana" before, but sounds good
baby, that's art |

I'm 25, but I'll be 26 in a little over a month.
I think "Americana" works, especially for Frank's more recent country-tinged stuff. I might go for the more general and say that Frank does "rock music," but maybe that's TOO general.

you can blame me for the 'americana' title. it just kind of rolled out seeming right -it seems frank and co. are currently sort of keepers of the flame as far as the spirit and sound of what they are doing. i've often ended up describing his genre as 'creative rock' because his whole schtick was a stream of consciousness that sucks you in and actually becomes interesting which seemed opposed to most rock which usually hovered around a few basic subjects in a fairly vapid way. 'intelligent rock' -i tried that one too, and it fits but it sounds wierd. the current frank black and band could definitely define americana on different levels but the sad thing is that they reach to the past to get an american sound and spirit -the americana moniker only works in the context of his current direction in sound. they are not reflecting current american trends or culture which is kind of wierd. i mean this is the land of nashville 'studio musicians only' country music. rap, 'whatever the hell christina aguilera and britny spears are' and then theres the rock music in america these days: old timers and way young timers -the bands that are good are around -but not in the pop eye -everything is a 'marketable niche genre' or whatever. you know the deal. blah blah blah. ultimately they are a 'rock 'n' roll' band in the classic sense these days thats all. frank black certainly distinguished himself from the crowd thats for sure, and it does make for interesting comparisons from new to old. i guess the thing i'm trying to put my finger on is what genre is there that embraces this band? because even though it seems like the direction is a staid country formula, their execution is as vibrant as any catholics' release and franks' tenacious vocals still ring all the bells. -and nothing in the country genre is even close to being similar. when all is said and done they are on their own path and that is a cool thing we all must surely admire. -oh yeah, the confessional: i'm 43.

Dean, doesn't it seem like every year after 20 or so has gone by at double-pace? it's a little disconcerting. Next thing we know, we're going to be 30 and be like "what the hell happened to our 20's??"

oh yeah, music style. Let's just call Frank & the Catholics "Rock" and leave it at that. anything else just gets uncomfortable.
I am personally quite averse to pigeon-holes, and I find that most of my beloved music/bands defy simple categorization. I like to keep it that way

it's starting to look like a funny statistic: most die hard rolling stones fans are seemingly on average about 10 years junior to the age of the stones themselves -and it will be interesting to see what the average age is when (and if) a good deal reply to this thread. the stones are all roughly the same age -but i think frank black is senior in the catholics. r. gilbert is next oldest would be my guess. -i take it back, if rich was in human sexual response in 1980 ...then he my be the granpa of the group -i dunno

21. I think Americana works pretty well. Also a friend of mine thought the Dog in the Sand cover was perfect for the band as it heavily conveyed Americana. I agree.

Oh you have no idea. Forget the 20's. Wait until you get to your 30's and you're like, "what the hell happened to my thirties?" They go in triple time.

i'm 17. americana works, as would singer-songwriter, though i think the band gets in the way of that idea;) plus, when i think of singer-songwriters i get visions of, like, heather nova or someone strummy and stuff, rather than REAL ones like waits and costello.

Oh, you better believe it. I hit 30 in a week's time. What the hell happened to my 20s?!
That said, I don't feel any different at all, so don't worry about it! 30 is just a number.

Yeah, it's more than a little scary. If mere is correct that 30's are triple time, then at least that explains why the elderly move so slow: everything around them is whizzing by at 8-9 times the speed it is for the rest of us! I plan to also move that speed, ala the Matrix. Nothing like using a cane to beat down several hundred agents.

I'm 32. Americana is a good description, but generally, when asked, I say "Well, it's rocky, punky, bluesy, folky, and country." It's like gumbo. |

Heya,
I'm 36 years old--wow. I should really know better. I've been listening to FB since the first Pixies album. I'm also one of those who misses the old styley but I appreciate what Mr. Black is doing now. I would classify the music as Rock with some Rolling Stones/Country inflection. His tunes make a nice balance with the old school punk I've been reliving (heavy Black Flag phase, Rollins-era no less). Regards, Cookie |

I think most of what I listen to, including Frank, isn't really genre-specific. That's not to say that it's all that diverse, or that you couldn't find a genre to describe it if you wanted to, but it's difficult to pigeonhole in the way the recording industry likes to do. I guess a lot of what I listen to could be considered "nerd rock," and I suppose an artist with songs about black holes, Mars, Jainism, and historical figures could fit into that category, but it's not a designation I really like. It's not that I really mind being considered a nerd, but more that "nerd rock" is a rather dismissive genre title.
I usually like to go along with Andy Partridge of XTC and consider everything (within reason) to be "pop," but nowadays that often seems to make people think of the mass-produced Britney Spears/'Nsync kind of stuff. So maybe just "rock" works best.

I just turned 27.
Frank Black & the Catholics = rock. That's all I'd say. The last time I described the band to someone I think I said they had a "classic rock sound". I don't like the Americana or alt-country tags. The band covers a lot of the same ground as the Rolling Stones and Neil Young really and no one calls those guys americana or alt-country. |

THE MAN HIMSELF QUANTIFIES HIS GENRE:
TO ALL MY FANS...
There seems to be much concern over the fact that I don't say much during my gigs. I have never in 17 years chatted from the stage. It is not my style. Most of the crowd is there to hear music and could care less about what I might have to say as a citizen. If I made pop music and played to thousands of people a night, maybe my demeanor would be a little different. I PLAY ARTY ROCK MUSIC on the arty rock music circuit. It has never been my expectation that one should be chatty in this arena. That has never been my experience when I am a patron. And if I don't do an encore it isn't because I'm "in a bad mood". It's because the audience didn't really ask for one. Basically, I, the artist, don't deserve to take an encore if it is not demanded. The oft performed encore is a classic example of theatrical tradition becoming watered-down, dumbed-down, and meaningless. It's a real shame. I am a guitar player. I am not a dancing bear....I am a singer. I am not a dancing bear... I am a guy loading a trailer. I am not a dancing bear... I am a cabaret singer. I am not a dancing bear... Sometimes people think that I am rude when I don't switch into that dancing bear routine. I am not complaining. I adore playing music to the people that support my art. But I am not a fucking dancing bear... I may look like a dancing bear! Sure. I admit it.
