Well I can only say - Rich Gilbert is definitely not a snob. Ran into him outside the pub round the corner from the Astoria after the gig on Weds - he put up with my very drunken hollering "HOY IT'S RICH GILBERT!!!" and even listened politely as I bellowed in his ear that "I FOOKIN LOVE FRANK BLACK AND THE CATHOLICS MAANNNN" and tried to sell him my T-shirt. He then signed my ticket, and signed lots of stuff for other people. So no, Rich is not a snob, he's a totally sound person.

That Barbara Streisand on the other hand....

If Rich can make it through a loud, obnoxious drunk limey than he definitely is NOT a snob.

I saw him in the foyer after the oxford gig, and shared a word or two, he seemed pretty cool.

you know, sometimes we in the band have shit to do...sometimes we have to take a shit, in fact...sometimes we're in a bad mood because auntie mary died...sometimes we're busy looking for our loved ones who are wandering around the venue...sometimes we're trying to find a pay phone...sometimes we're in a rush because of SOME VERY GOOD REASON...you know, sometimes we just don't have time for you frank black francis...don't take it personally...we try to say hi, sign autographs, acknowledge our patrons, but this is going on 7 days a week, all day and all night, and we just can't come through for you sometimes...trust me, if we could afford to have a big crew taking care of our every need we would have a lot more time to chat and socialize, and if we were not in the mood we would just stay in our hotel suite until showtime. but if my amp breaks one afternoon during a tour, you know who usually ends up fixing it? RICH GILBERT. he is not a snob. he is one of the nicest people i have ever known.

Damn straight Frank......I saw you guys in Louisville Ky. not long ago and me and my friend were the first two people to walk into the venue........I almost ran into you cuz I didn't even realize that it was you, and even though you are in my top 3 songwriters of all time, I just didn't want to aggravate you or any of the other guys, you were all packing equipment in......and I totally respected that. Hey, when you don't have pack around a multi-million dollar crew, you do what you have to. And I personally think that you are being almost "too nice" to some of these dickheads here that are saying "such and such is an ass...blah blah blah......get a fucking life people.......are you happy every fucking day? No? That's what the hell I thought. Why the hell do you expect Frank and the Catholics to be any different? Just to satisfy you? Ooops...sorry.....that isn't how shit works in the real world and I dont' think that that is how shit works in the world of FB/the Catholics either......

I'm late on this topic, but when steaknsabre and I had the pleasure of meeting Mr Gilbert in chicago last spring, both before and after the performance, we found him to be dripping with warmth, personality and humanity.

As musicians, we understand that sometimes one has to concentrate on other things. Had Gilbert been brusque with us, we would have assumed it was because he had other things on his mind, like, getting ready for the show, breaking down the set, or perhaps something going on in his personal life. We would never had assumed it was because he generally was an asshole.

I've noticed among many of my musician friends that we all have a "time" that we need to either get ready for a set, or come down from one. It's different for everybody, and what a performer needs during that "time" is also different for everybody too. some need to be alone, some need to just noodle around their axes, some need to hang out with fans, some need to write in their journals, etc. What I do know is that if you upset that need, sometimes its not pretty. I respect that. I think many fans forget that while this is the fan's release, and it LOOKS like all fun ("I wish I was a touring rock musician"), that this is these's people's JOB. THey're at WORK. It's a great job, yes, but its still a job. Think how you would react if you were at work, getting ready for a presentation or something, and somebody not even in your department interrupts you just to shoot the shit, and yoour' on deadline or something. Same thing. I have a dear frined who is the nicest person you could ever hope to meet, but word to the wise -- stay away from her approx 45 minutes before she goes on stage. And I'll never forget the time when I was first dating steaknsabre, and drove down to Chicago to see him on the last show of his band's tour. Right after the set I was in the audience trying to get his attention and he was something of a jerk to me. I now know that right after the set, when he's still going a million mioles an hour, and walking off stage is like suddenly downshifting and blowing the tranny and killing your clutch is the WRONG time to deal with my honey. Fair enough. As for me, I'm very social, but please don't talk to me after a set until I've packed up my gear and settled up with the bar owner (or made arrangements). I'm still in "business mode" at that time -- and having been robbed once in a club, I'm touchy about making sure my gear is secure.

I also agree that judging somebody based on one bad encounter isnt' fair. Now, granted, I've just judged Gilbert as a fine person based on two GREAT encounters, but at the same time, the evidence indicates that this wasn't an isolated incident. Like I said, our encounter indicated that his warmth and sincerety wasn't forced, wasn't an act, and wasn't out of the ordinary for him.

And of course, steaknsabre and I are co-presidents of his fan club anyway, so we're skewed in the opinion.

Rich and Frank, are gentlemen. talented ordinary men just like you and I, we could easyly cross paths in the grocery store, at the bank, at the gas station or macdonalds. so many times people turn an ordinary man and wonderful old soul into an idol that stands on thier dresser in thier room surrounded by magazine clippings flowers, incense, candles, discareded set lists and guitar picks from the show they attended and shit like that. So dont be dissapointed or take it personal if at the time if the cult icon super hero has to break away from the line of fans waiting to meet and greet just before you get your chance to thank him, because hes been holding a piss or bowl movement in order attempt to shake hands and awknowledge every last fan. because even superheros get diahrreah and or has to take a piss.
